Indeed, it has been estimated that almost 90% of new automobile technologies involve IT in some form. Smart driving technologies that improve safety as well as green fuel technologies are quite representative of the convergence between IT and automobiles. The smart driving technologies include three key elements: sensing of driving environments, detection of objects and potential hazards and the generation of driving control signals including warning signals. Although radar-based systems are primarily used for sensing the driving environments, the camera has gained importance in advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). This book covers system-on-a-chip (SoC) designs—including both algorithms and hardware—related with image sensing and object detection by using the camera for smart driving systems. It introduces a variety of algorithms such as lens correction, super resolution, image enhancement and object detections from the images captured by low-cost vehicle camera. This is followed by implementation issues such as SoC architecture, hardware accelerator, software development environment and reliability techniques for automobile vision systems. This book is aimed for the new and practicing engineers in automotive and chip-design industries to provide some overall guidelines for the development of automotive vision systems. It will also help graduate students understand and get started for the research work in this field.

The implementation of autonomous driving requires new sources of sensory data, such as cameras, radars, and lidars, and the algorithm processing requires a high degree of parallel computing. In this regard, traditional CPUs have insufficient computing power, while DSPs are good at image processing but lack sufficient performance for deep learning. Although GPUs are good at training, they are too “power-hungry,” which can affect vehicle performance. Therefore, this book looks to the future, arguing that custom ASICs are bound to become mainstream. With the goal of ICs design for autonomous driving, this book discusses the theory and engineering practice of designing future-oriented autonomous driving SoC chips. The content is divided into thirteen chapters, the first chapter mainly introduces readers to the current challenges and research directions in autonomous driving. Chapters 2–6 focus on algorithm design for perception and planning control. Chapters 7–10 address the optimization of deep learning models and the design of deep learning chips, while Chapters 11-12 cover automatic driving software architecture design. Book excerpt: The main goal when operating a vehicle is to safely participate in road-traffic while minimising the adverse effects on our environment. This goal is pursued by road safety measures ranging from safety-oriented road design to driver assistance systems. The latter require exteroceptive sensors to acquire information about the vehicle‘s current environment. In this thesis an efficient resource allocation algorithm for automotive vision systems is proposed. The novel system architecture is shown to efficiently allocate both high-resolution sensor resources and computational expensive processes based upon low-resolution sensor data. The Pareto efficient decision making process used for resource allocation is formalised, implemented, and evaluated using road traffic test sequences acquired by a multi-modal sensor system on a test vehicle provided by AUDI AG.

They had designed and built an early frame-grabber to deliver digitized color video from a (very large) electronic video camera on a tripod to a mini-computer (sic) with a (huge!) disk drive—about the size of four washing machines. They had also - signed a binary image array processor and programming language, complete with a user’s guide, to facilitate designing software for this one-of-a-kindprocessor. The overall system enabled programmable real-time image processing at video rate for many operations. I had the whole lab to myself. I designed software that detected an object in the eldofview,trackeditsmovementsinrealtime,anddisplayedarunningdescription of the events in English. For example: “An object has appeared in the upper right corner...Itismovingdownandtotheleft...Nowtheobjectisgettingcloser...The object moved out of sight to the left”—about like that. The algorithms were simple, relying on a suf cient image intensity difference to separate the object from the background (a plain wall). From computer vision papers I had read, I knew that vision in general imaging conditions is much more sophisticated. But it worked, it was great fun, and I was hooked.

Heterogeneous Embedded Systems, compiled largely from a set of contributions from participants of past editions of the Winter School on Heterogeneous Embedded Systems Design Technology (FETCH), proposes a necessarily broad and holistic overview of design techniques used to tackle the various facets of heterogeneity in terms of technology and opportunities at the physical level, signal representations and different abstraction levels, architectures and components based on hardware and software, in all the main phases of design (modeling, validation with multiple models of computation, synthesis and optimization).
