Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following Quillen's approach to complex cobordism, the authors introduce the notion of oriented cohomology theory on the category of smooth varieties over a fixed field. They prove the existence of a universal such theory (in characteristic 0) called Algebraic Cobordism. The book also contains some examples of computations and applications.

Book Algebraic Cobordism and K Theory

Download or read book Algebraic Cobordism and K Theory written by Victor Percy Snaith and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1979 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A decomposition is given of the S-type of the classifying spaces of the classical groups. This decomposition is in terms of Thom spaces and by means of it cobordism groups are embedded into the stable homotopy of classifying spaces. This is used to show that each of the classical cobordism theories, and also complex K-theory, is obtainable as a localization of the stable homotopy ring of a classifying space.

Book Complex Cobordism and Stable Homotopy Groups of Spheres

Download or read book Complex Cobordism and Stable Homotopy Groups of Spheres written by Douglas C. Ravenel and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2003-11-25 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of its first edition, this book has served as one of the few available on the classical Adams spectral sequence, and is the best account on the Adams-Novikov spectral sequence. This new edition has been updated in many places, especially the final chapter, which has been completely rewritten with an eye toward future research in the field. It remains the definitive reference on the stable homotopy groups of spheres. The first three chapters introduce the homotopy groups of spheres and take the reader from the classical results in the field though the computational aspects of the classical Adams spectral sequence and its modifications, which are the main tools topologists have to investigate the homotopy groups of spheres. Nowadays, the most efficient tools are the Brown-Peterson theory, the Adams-Novikov spectral sequence, and the chromatic spectral sequence, a device for analyzing the global structure of the stable homotopy groups of spheres and relating them to the cohomology of the Morava stabilizer groups. These topics are described in detail in Chapters 4 to 6. The revamped Chapter 7 is the computational payoff of the book, yielding a lot of information about the stable homotopy group of spheres. Appendices follow, giving self-contained accounts of the theory of formal group laws and the homological algebra associated with Hopf algebras and Hopf algebroids. The book is intended for anyone wishing to study computational stable homotopy theory. It is accessible to graduate students with a knowledge of algebraic topology and recommended to anyone wishing to venture into the frontiers of the subject.

Book Algebraic Topology

    Book Details:
  • Author : Nils Baas
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2009-08-05
  • ISBN : 3642012000
  • Pages : 417 pages

Download or read book Algebraic Topology written by Nils Baas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-08-05 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2007 Abel Symposium took place at the University of Oslo in August 2007. The goal of the symposium was to bring together mathematicians whose research efforts have led to recent advances in algebraic geometry, algebraic K-theory, algebraic topology, and mathematical physics. A common theme of this symposium was the development of new perspectives and new constructions with a categorical flavor. As the lectures at the symposium and the papers of this volume demonstrate, these perspectives and constructions have enabled a broadening of vistas, a synergy between once-differentiated subjects, and solutions to mathematical problems both old and new.

Book Handbook of Geometry and Topology of Singularities IV

Download or read book Handbook of Geometry and Topology of Singularities IV written by José Luis Cisneros-Molina and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the fourth volume of the Handbook of Geometry and Topology of Singularities, a series that aims to provide an accessible account of the state of the art of the subject, its frontiers, and its interactions with other areas of research. This volume consists of twelve chapters which provide an in-depth and reader-friendly survey of various important aspects of singularity theory. Some of these complement topics previously explored in volumes I to III. Amongst the topics studied in this volume are the Nash blow up, the space of arcs in algebraic varieties, determinantal singularities, Lipschitz geometry, indices of vector fields and 1-forms, motivic characteristic classes, the Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity and comparison theorems that spring from the classical De Rham complex. Singularities are ubiquitous in mathematics and science in general. Singularity theory is a crucible where different types of mathematical problems interact, surprising connections are born and simple questions lead to ideas which resonate in other subjects. Authored by world experts, the various contributions deal with both classical material and modern developments, covering a wide range of topics which are linked to each other in fundamental ways. The book is addressed to graduate students and newcomers to the theory, as well as to specialists who can use it as a guidebook.

Book Modern Classical Homotopy Theory

Download or read book Modern Classical Homotopy Theory written by Jeffrey Strom and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2011-10-19 with total page 862 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The core of classical homotopy theory is a body of ideas and theorems that emerged in the 1950s and was later largely codified in the notion of a model category. This core includes the notions of fibration and cofibration; CW complexes; long fiber and cofiber sequences; loop spaces and suspensions; and so on. Brown's representability theorems show that homology and cohomology are also contained in classical homotopy theory. This text develops classical homotopy theory from a modern point of view, meaning that the exposition is informed by the theory of model categories and that homotopy limits and colimits play central roles. The exposition is guided by the principle that it is generally preferable to prove topological results using topology (rather than algebra). The language and basic theory of homotopy limits and colimits make it possible to penetrate deep into the subject with just the rudiments of algebra. The text does reach advanced territory, including the Steenrod algebra, Bott periodicity, localization, the Exponent Theorem of Cohen, Moore, and Neisendorfer, and Miller's Theorem on the Sullivan Conjecture. Thus the reader is given the tools needed to understand and participate in research at (part of) the current frontier of homotopy theory. Proofs are not provided outright. Rather, they are presented in the form of directed problem sets. To the expert, these read as terse proofs; to novices they are challenges that draw them in and help them to thoroughly understand the arguments.

Book Lectures on the h Cobordism Theorem

Download or read book Lectures on the h Cobordism Theorem written by John Milnor and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2025-03-25 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Important lectures on differential topology by acclaimed mathematician John Milnor These are notes from lectures that John Milnor delivered as a seminar on differential topology in 1963 at Princeton University. These lectures give a new proof of the h-cobordism theorem that is different from the original proof presented by Stephen Smale. Milnor's goal was to provide a fully rigorous proof in terms of Morse functions. This book remains an important resource in the application of Morse theory.
