This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alfalfa and Beef Production in Argentina Land jumps up incredibly in value; thousands Of acres Often change hands several times In a year, with valuations do'ubled at each exchange. This was the case in 1902 with lands in the central part Of the Province Of San Luis, 425 miles by rail west Of the city Of Buenos Aires. It was found that alfalfa would grow very well there, and the lands were wanted by men owning large cattle ranches (pl. II) in the Province Of Buenos Aires, where they could not afford to fatten their steers. They wanted cheap alfalfa lands to which they could send their young steers to fatten and on which they could breed others. Book Uruguay s Livestock and Meat Industry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Uruguay s Livestock and Meat Industry Classic Reprint written by Dwight R. Bishop and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Uruguay's Livestock and Meat Industry Total livestock numbers have not changed Significantly in 50 years. While there has been some increase in cattle numbers in the last decade, there has been a corresponding decline in sheep population. Relatively high export taxes and domestic price ceilings have reduced returns from livestock operations and discouraged expansion of the industry. Another factor is that most of the livestock are raised on unimproved native grass pastures, and as a result suffer from nutritional deficiencies. Thus productivity per head of livestock is low and costs of production tend to be high. During most of the past 10 years, Uruguay has had a higher per capita consumption of meat than any other country. About 85 percent of the meat production is consumed domestically, and only 15 percent sold on the export market. Book Foreign Agriculture Circular

Download or read book Foreign Agriculture Circular written by United States Department Of Agriculture and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-17 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Agriculture Circular: July 24, 1957 Pastures.-pastures, which cover large acreage, have a special importance in Argentina because cattle and sheep raising are almost exclusively graz ing industries. As a rule, steers are fattened on pastures, and only in cases of extreme drought are they fed corn. Pasture quality in the various areas directly determines the number, kind, and quality of livestock. Alfalfa does especially well in the major part of the main cereal and live stock zone and provides fine pasturage for the fattening of steers, On the southeastern side of Buenos Aires Province, alfalfa does not do well; natural gasses, however, provide good pasture land for cattle and sheep breeding. Sheep grazing is well established in Patagonia, a dry region where pastures are poor in the south but better in the northeast. Book Bob Kleberg and the King Ranch

Download or read book Bob Kleberg and the King Ranch written by John Cypher and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-06-28 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Combines a biography of Kleberg . . . with the story of the postwar boom years that changed the King Ranch . . . into an international corporate agribusiness.” —Houston Chronicle Ranching on the vast scale that Texas is famous for actually happened at King Ranch, a sea of grass that ultimately spread its pastures to countries around the globe under the fifty-year leadership of Bob Kleberg. This absorbing biography, written by Kleberg's top assistant of many years, captures both the life of the man and the spirit of the kingdom he ruled, offering a rare, insider's view of life on a fabled Texas ranch. John Cypher spent forty years (1948–1988) on King Ranch. In these pages, he melds highlights of Kleberg’s life with memories of his own experiences as the “right hand” who implemented many of Kleberg's grand designs. In a lively story laced with fascinating anecdotes, Cypher both recounts his worldwide travels with Kleberg as the ranch expanded its holdings around the world, and describes timeless, traditional tasks such as roundup at the home ranch in Kingsville. Chronicling Kleberg’s accomplishments as well as his legendary lifestyle, which included friendships not merely with the rich and famous but also with Queen Elizabeth, who shared his love of horse racing, this book is essential reading for anyone interested in ranching and one of its most famous practitioners. “Cypher[‘s] easy conversational style makes life on a working ranch, the care and feeding of visiting celebrities and the field of international agribusiness both understandable and entertaining.” —San Antonio Express-News “Probably the best of what will ever be known of the inner Bob Kleberg.” —East Texas Historical Journal

Book excerpt: N this comprehensive history, updated to include the climactic events of the five years since the Falklands War, Professor Rock documents the early colonial history of Argentina, pointing to the colonial forms established during the Spanish conquest as the source for Argentina's continued reliance on foreign commercial and investment partnerships. The collapse of Argentina's close western European ties after World War II is thus seen as the underlying cause for her current economic and political crisis.

Book Should We Eat Meat

Download or read book Should We Eat Meat written by Vaclav Smil and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-03-18 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meat eating is often a contentious subject, whether considering the technical, ethical, environmental, political, or health-related aspects of production and consumption. This book is a wide-ranging and interdisciplinary examination and critique of meat consumption by humans, throughout their evolution and around the world. Setting the scene with a chapter on meat’s role in human evolution and its growing influence during the development of agricultural practices, the book goes on to examine modern production systems, their efficiencies, outputs, and impacts. The major global trends of meat consumption are described in order to find out what part its consumption plays in changing modern diets in countries around the world. The heart of the book addresses the consequences of the "massive carnivory" of western diets, looking at the inefficiencies of production and at the huge impacts on land, water, and the atmosphere. Health impacts are also covered, both positive and negative. In conclusion, the author looks forward at his vision of “rational meat eating”, where environmental and health impacts are reduced, animals are treated more humanely, and alternative sources of protein make a higher contribution. Should We Eat Meat? is not an ideological tract for or against carnivorousness but rather a careful evaluation of meat's roles in human diets and the environmental and health consequences of its production and consumption. It will be of interest to a wide readership including professionals and academics in food and agricultural production, human health and nutrition, environmental science, and regulatory and policy making bodies around the world.
