Book The Successful Dyslexic

Download or read book The Successful Dyslexic written by Neil Alexander-Passe and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-10 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative book looks at the keys for success in dyslexic adults, comparing both those who are successful and less successful, enabling parents and teachers to use these keys to best support young dyslexics. These keys look at home life, school, career choices, working relationships, coping strategies, traits, unique selling points, and what is considered success for somebody with dyslexia. The Successful Dyslexic questions if school-based trauma can be used positively, as both successful and unsuccessful dyslexic adults share the same traumatic school experiences. It is how these adult dyslexics have used this trauma, positively or negatively that has set them on the path for success, or to struggle as adults searching for a worthwhile career. The theories of ‘disability paradox’ and ‘post-traumatic growth’ are used to understand why despite having a disability, many dyslexics can be, and are, highly successful. This book details an interview study of 27 successful and 10 less successful dyslexics, with 2 expert interviews, and supported by two large online studies. In total this book includes the contribution of 191 adult dyslexics. Each in-depth interview has sought to understand the individual’s journey from childhood to adulthood, and their quotes are used to enlighten the reader to each of their individual experiences. Armed with these insights, it is hoped that parents and teachers of young dyslexics can set them on the path to unlock their own future success.

Book excerpt: The children who experience difficulty with reading challenge both their parents and teachers. While difficulty with other subjects is seen as being specific to that subject area, difficulty with reading is often regarded as difficulty with learning. The author has had first hand knowledge of this. The author has lived in the world of the dyslexic. He brings the kind of meaningful insight that is possible only from one who has been there. He details many of the classroom challenges he faced and outlines some of the coping strategies he devised to overcome those challenges. The author describes how dyslexia manifests itself outside the classroom affecting all aspects of an individual's life. His experiences shed new light on the way dyslexia affects the teenager. He shares his social misadventures with such sincerity, frankness and honesty that it allows the reader to feel his pain and to glory in his achievements. The author describes an exercise he has used successfully to allow normal individuals to perform similar to the way the dyslexics perform on spelling exercises. It is an eye opener that provides a better understanding of the dyslexics' plight. The new insights revealed in this work would assist the teachers to better understand the dyslexic students: it would provide greater awareness to researchers: it would give hope and encouragement to parents and be a source of inspiration to dyslexics. The work was conceived in an attempt to contribute to the body of knowledge available on the subject.

Book Dyslexia There Is a Cure

Download or read book Dyslexia There Is a Cure written by John Evan-Jones and published by . This book was released on 1999-12-19 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " What started as a slight speech problem, was quickly followed by some motoric difficulties and by the time Alexander was five years of age, it was obvious he had a learning difficulty. By the age of seven he was formally diagnosed as being deeply dyslexic and I was strongly advised to place Alexander in a boarding-school for Dyslexics. In true Celtic tradition I said "To hell with that!" It was then that I decided that this bright, sensitive little boy of mine was not going to be handicapped or disadvantaged by this dreadful condition called Dyslexia. I had yet to learn that the resources available to help parents help their dyslexic children are woefully inadequate in just about every society - despite the fact that dyslexia is a $15 billion a year research industry. I began to realize just how desperate and frustrated Augusto and Michaela Odone had become in their search, for what was to become known as Lorenzos Oil. The turning point was when I met Marianne a gifted special needs teacher. We pooled our experiences and research and set about designing a program that would cure Alexander. Without any official help, support, or interest - we succeeded. Despite what many experts say about dyslexia, for many dyslexics there is a cure and we proved it." Extract from an interview with John Evan-Jones in the Scandinavian media. "Dyslexia there is a cure" is a dynamic new book written by John and Marianne Evan-Jones which is designed to help parents teach their dyslexic child to read. It briefly describes the symptoms and struggle that they experienced with their son Alexander (both in the UK and Denmark) and in detail contains a unique and easy to use home-teaching program. Entitled the P.O.W.E.R program (Power Over Words Equals Results), it is a complete home-teaching program that any parent can understand and use with startling results. Combining traditional special-needs teaching approaches with the latest psychological methods, it is now possible for any child to begin to read after the first session of the POWER program. Within a very short time of commencing the program, virtually any child will show a remarkable improvement in their reading, writing and spelling abilities. Since its first publication in Scandinavia, thousands of parents from around the world have contacted John and Marianne Evan-Jones for help and advice, many of them buying the Danish version of the book and having it translated at their own cost. Because of this huge interest, John and Marianne Evan-Jones have now decided to release the book in English.

Book A Journey with Dyslexia

Download or read book A Journey with Dyslexia written by Peter James Wilson and published by Xlibris Au. This book was released on 2024-09-17 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A Journey with Dyslexia" is an educational descriptive Essay of 16680 words about Peter (77) and his experiences in overcoming dyslexia. Peter started exploring dyslexia when he was diagnosed at age 23. He has taught himself to read and write and now feels he has the knowledge to help dyslexic sufferers and school teachers. His educational handbook describes procedures for creating neural pathways that could enable sufferers to learn to read and write. Peter experienced frustration, discrimination, lack of confidence, and poor self-esteem. He overcame all the trials. With sixty years of personal experience, Peter now understands what happened to him and continues to progress. In his early childhood, he had many negative experiences that caused extreme stress. He started to realise that he was not stupid and that he might even be intelligent. Through determination, he looked for clues that linked every part of his life and formed a complete picture of his dyslexic experience. He used this to compile evidence of his experience with dyslexia and its many traits. However, with the techniques that helped him, he helped others develop neural pathways. At fifty-five, after purchasing a computer, he wrote a story, fulfilling a lifelong wish. After writing it he found he could read novels, understand the story, its twists and turns, and remember the plot. To date, he has written six unpublished fantasy novels. At sixty-seven, He was diagnosed as autistic and needed to reassess his dyslexic journey in the light of this diagnosis. In his seventies, Peter understood his journey had come full circle. He had beneficial knowledge to share with teachers, students, and parents. He used the strategies he developed for himself to help others.

Dyslexic is the remarkable story of Mike Balzano, an undiagnosed learning-disabled child of working class immigrants whose antisocial behavior earned him the name "Crazy Mikey." Failing at everything, he became a garbage collector until crippled by a back injury. He then entered an optical apprenticeship that turned his life around. He earned a high school diploma, graduated from a university magna cum laude, and earned a PhD with distinction from Georgetown University. Balzano believes that the apprenticeship gave him the discipline and self-confidence to begin his journey. He urges parents, teachers, school counselors, and superintendents to expand their current focus of promoting college careers to include promoting careers that require apprenticeships. Dyslexic includes the testimonies of parents who chose different approaches to address the learning disabilities of their children, and appendices where parents can find help.
