Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2022 in the subject Sociology - Law and Delinquency, grade: 4.00, , language: English, abstract: Sexual assault has become prevalent among members of the university community. This has prompted researchers to critically examine risk factors that propel the prevalence of sexual assault in the university community. Arrays of factors generally lead to the prevalence of sexual assault, but alcohol consumption has remained the leading factor. This study provided a systematic response to the question of if alcohol has any connection with sexual assaults at Sheffield University. The primary aim of the research critically established that alcohol consumption is a leading factor in sexual assault in the university community. The study implemented both quantitative method and qualitative methods. Data were collated from students and academic and non-academic members of the university community. A total of 150 persons participated in the study, wherein 67% were female participants, 30% were male participants and 3% were non-gender specified participants. The findings of the study, which emanate from the collated and presented data, provide insight into the nature of alcohol consumption among people at the University of Sheffield.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alcohol use by young people is extremely dangerous - both to themselves and society at large. Underage alcohol use is associated with traffic fatalities, violence, unsafe sex, suicide, educational failure, and other problem behaviors that diminish the prospects of future success, as well as health risks â€" and the earlier teens start drinking, the greater the danger. Despite these serious concerns, the media continues to make drinking look attractive to youth, and it remains possible and even easy for teenagers to get access to alcohol. Why is this dangerous behavior so pervasive? What can be done to prevent it? What will work and who is responsible for making sure it happens? Reducing Underage Drinking addresses these questions and proposes a new way to combat underage alcohol use. It explores the ways in which may different individuals and groups contribute to the problem and how they can be enlisted to prevent it. Reducing Underage Drinking will serve as both a game plan and a call to arms for anyone with an investment in youth health and safety.

Book Aggression related Alcohol Expectancies and Exposure to Community Alcohol related Agression Among Students at the University of the Western Cape

Download or read book Aggression related Alcohol Expectancies and Exposure to Community Alcohol related Agression Among Students at the University of the Western Cape written by Renier Du Toit and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between alcohol consumption and alcohol-related violence has been firmly established in a wide array of studies concerning various forms of violence including intimate partner violence, domestic violence as well as sexual assault. One factor which has been highlighted as having a moderating effect on the relationship between alcohol consumption and alcohol-related aggression is the specific aggression-related alcohol expectancies concerning the effects of alcohol consumption on aggressive behaviour. In light of the prevalence of alcohol-related violence in South African communities it becomes important to examine the specific factors that moderate the relationship between alcohol consumption and alcohol-related aggression and violence. The aim of this study was to examine aggressionrelated alcohol expectancies as a moderating factor in the relationship between alcohol consumption and alcohol-related aggression and to examine the possible influence of exposure to community alcohol-related aggression in the formulation of aggression-related alcohol expectancies. The main objectives of this were to examine aggression-related alcohol expectancies as well as exposure to community alcohol-related aggression as domains for intervention to prevent alcohol-related violence.

Book Social Situational and Psychological Factors Linked to Campus Sexual Assault

Download or read book Social Situational and Psychological Factors Linked to Campus Sexual Assault written by Alison Much Tartaglia and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Objective: This dissertation research utilizes a dataset derived from the National Collegiate Health Assessment II to identify specific social, situational and psychological factors that contribute to students becoming victims of campus sexual assault at a large, southern university historically known as a “party school.” Methods: Combined data for the period 2010-2014 were used to create a data set (n=5504) to examine the interplay between alcohol consumption and likelihood of experiencing sexual assault on this campus. Logistic regression quantified the magnitude of the relationship between certain survey items specific to alcohol use, protective behavioral strategies for high-risk alcohol use, and likelihood of experiencing sexual assault. Results: Victims of sexual assault were found to be predominantly female, median age of 21, and in their second year of college. Adjusted odds ratios indicated strong relationships (p ≤ .01) between most of the social, situational, and psychological variables analyzed and the likelihood of experiencing sexual assault, except for protective behavioral strategies for high-risk alcohol use, alternating drinking, staying with a friend the entire time “partying,” and tracking the amount of alcohol consumed. Conclusion: Since 2011, the federal government has placed a significant amount of attention on mitigating the likelihood of sexual abuse on college campuses, calling for both adherence to federal mandates, and strongly recommending that prevention programs covering a wide array of topics be instituted. This has, in turn, created an environment for administrators and educators in which ensuring compliance with federal mandates appears to take precedence over student safety and program efficacy. Programs that are developed solely based on federal mandates, without an understanding of the complexity and context surrounding sexual assault on college campuses may increase reporting and ensure that services are offered for victims, but will not impact the overall numbers of victims. This research seeks to propose a foundation for integrating protective behavioral strategies for high-risk alcohol use and sexual assault primary prevention programs within higher education institutions. This would allow both underfunded and understaffed educators to capitalize on the potential for pooling limited resources and more importantly enhancing the likelihood of reducing both the risk for and incidence of sexual assault on college campuses.

Book Perceptions of University Community Members Regarding Alcohol Restriction Policies

Download or read book Perceptions of University Community Members Regarding Alcohol Restriction Policies written by Katherine A. Meeker and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been a growing concern regarding sexual assaults on college and university campuses. The push to decrease sexual assaults has lead researchers and universities to examine alcohol abuse as a contributing factor. Many colleges and universities have developed new policies for alcohol restriction, but they have done so without taking into consideration the views of the campus community. In the absence of collaboration between the campus community and university administration, such policies will likely be ineffective. This study explores the beliefs, perceptions, and attitudes of the campus community regarding alcohol restriction policies at The University of Southern Mississippi. --Page iv.

Book A Review of the Literature on Sexual Assault Perpetrator Characteristics and Behaviors

Download or read book A Review of the Literature on Sexual Assault Perpetrator Characteristics and Behaviors written by Sarah Michal Greathouse and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sexual assault continues to be a pervasive problem, both for society in general and within the military community. To assist the Air Force in its continued efforts to combat sexual assault within its ranks, we reviewed the existing empirical literature on the characteristics and behaviors of adult perpetrators who commit sexual assault against other adults. Our search was not limited to studies of military populations. While a vast majority of the existing literature has focused on sole male perpetrators who assault female victims, we identified some research on other types of perpetrators, including female sexual assault perpetrators, men who perpetrate assault against other men, and perpetrators who participate in group sexual assault. This body of research indicates that adult perpetrators are diverse in terms of their demographics, background characteristics, and motivations. Moreover, research indicates that sexual assault perpetration is likely influenced by a combination of factors, including an individual's developmental and family history; his or her personality, including attitudes/cognitions; and environmental factors, including peer attitudes and alcohol consumption. The complexity of factors that influence sexual assault perpetration and the multiple pathways that lead to an attack make it difficult to predict whether an individual is prone to commit sexual assault. While predicting sexual assault perpetration is problematic, we identified a number of factors related to perpetration that may be relevant for intervention efforts and offer recommendations for the Air Force"--Publisher's web site.

Download or read book A Call to Action written by National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-04-19 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every year as spring break approaches or when another promising young student dies in an alcohol-related tragedy, college drinking becomes a national issue. Although excessive drinking by college students is accepted as a rite of passage by many, alcohol-related tragedies never fail to shock us and to prompt calls for immediate action. When schools respond with well intentioned programs, but the problem persists, it is natural to wonder how much we really understand about excessive, college student drinking. Is it inevitable? Can we take steps to prevent it or reduce its consequences? Why have efforts to date proven ineffective? The fact is that since 1976, when the newly created National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) issued its only report on abusive drinking by college students, research advances have transformed our understanding of alcohol abuse and related problems. For example, we now know that a broad array of factors affect college student drinking behavior. These include an individual's susceptibility to alcohol, campus norms related to drinking, and conditions within the larger community that make alcohol readily accessible and fail to penalize inappropriate use. Together these influences contribute to a culture of drinking that is more damaging and deadly than previously recognized. This report, developed by the NIAAA-supported Task Force on College Drinking after 3 years of intensive discussions, describes our new understanding of dangerous drinking behavior by college students and its consequences for both drinkers and nondrinkers. Rather than debate how many drink how much, the Task Force focused on the consequences. What it found challenges many common assumptions about the size and nature of the problem. Not only do some 1,400 college students between the ages of 18 and 24 die every year as a result of hazardous drinking, but a half million suffer unintentional injuries under the influence of alcohol. Another 600,000 are assaulted by fellow drinking students and more than 70,000 are sexually assaulted. The data on academic achievement, damage to facilities, and health problems are equally alarming. The nature of existing data leads to the inference that some college students meet the diagnostic criteria for alcohol dependence as currently specified by the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition (DSM-IV), but are not receiving treatment. Although most students who exhibit dangerous drinking behavior during their college career mature out of heavy drinking, this behavior and its consequences are nonetheless cause for concern. In its report, the Task Force outlines a series of recommendations for colleges and universities, researchers, and NIAAA. What distinguishes this guidance from others is its firm reliance on scientific evidence and its call for collaboration between academic institutions and researchers. In response to the information and recommendations in this report, NIAAA is committing an additional $8 million over the next two fiscal years to the issue of college drinking. It also is collaborating with several college presidents to determine the effectiveness of policies aimed at reducing the problem. The chancellor of a university that recently suffered the alcohol-related death of one of its students said, "Our children's lives are at real risk, and universities need to make every effort to prevent any more lives from being wasted." This report underscores the wisdom of that advice and urges us to join forces in changing the culture of drinking on our Nation's campuses from one that fosters destructive behavior to one that discourages it.

Book Sex Power Conflict Evolutionary and Feminist Perspectives

Download or read book Sex Power Conflict Evolutionary and Feminist Perspectives written by Ann Arbor David M. Buss Professor of Psychology University of Michigan and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1996-03-21 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexual harassment in the workplace, date rape, and domestic violence dominate the headlines and have recently sparked scholarly debates about the nature of the sexes. Concurrently, the scientific community is conducting research in topics of sex and gender issues. Indeed, more research is being done on the topics of sexual conflict and coercion than at any other time in the history of the social sciences. Despite this attention, it is clear that these issues are being addressed from two essentially different perspectives: one is labeled "feminist", while the other, viewed as antithetical to the feminist movement, is called "evolutionary psychology", which emphasizes the history of reproductive strategies in understanding conflict between the sexes. This book brings together leading experts from both sides of the debate in order to discover how each could offer insights lacking in the other. The editors' overall goal is to show how the feminist and evolutionary approaches are complementary despite their evident differences, then provide an integration and synthesis. In fact, several of the contributors to this unique volume consider themselves advocates of both approaches. As a stimulating presentation of the dynamics of sex, power, and conflict--and a pioneering rapprochement of the diverse tendencies within the scientific community-- this book will attract a wide audience in both psychology and women's studies fields.
