Book Alaska an Empire in the Making Classic Reprint

Download or read book Alaska an Empire in the Making Classic Reprint written by John Jasper Underwood and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alaska, an Empire in the Making The information contained in this book was gathered during an almost continuous residence of fourteen years in Alaska and the Yukon Territory. Much of this time, it is true, was spent in fishing, hunting, exploring, mining, and various ways other than the acquisition of data. But what has been written is as accurate as it is humanly possible to make it. The writer's notes and observations have been checked up with government reports and other official documents, and the works of Alfred H. Brooks, Chief of the Geological Survey in Alaska, Skidmore's "History of Sitka," Dall's "Resources of Alaska," Senator Sumner's speech on the resources of Alaska, and various documents in the state, treasury and other departments of the government have been freely consulted. It is hoped that it will serve not only as a guide for tourists and sightseers who visit the Northern wonderland, but also that it may contain matters of interest to the stock raiser, the farmer, the miner, the prospector, the investor, and those who may go to Alaska for purposes other than sight-seeing. A few of the photographs herein reproduced were taken by the writer, but the majority of them represent the work of several professional photographers situated in different parts of the Northland. This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through the Gold-Fields of Alaska to Bering Straits Had my original scheme succeeded, this work would have borne the alluring title of New York to Paris by Land a journey which, so far as I know, has never yet been accomplished, though I do not, for one moment, suggest that it never will be. My cloud, however, has its silver lining, seeing that the first part of our voyage lay through a region then known by name to perhaps a dozen white men, but now a byword throughout the civilised world: Klon dike. I may add that Harding and I were the first Europeans to reside for any length of time alone and unprotected among the Tchuktchis of Siberia. But for these facts this book might well have been entitled The Record of a Failure.' harry DE windt. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Alaska and the Panama Canal Classic Reprint

Download or read book Alaska and the Panama Canal Classic Reprint written by William D. Boyce and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alaska and the Panama Canal For Alaska we paid Russia for the Panama Canal Zone we paid the Panama Republic These were bargain prices, the sums paid being insignificant as com pared to the value of the lands, the one being small, but as important as any piece of ground of equal size upon the globe, the other magnificent in area and containing wealth many times greater in amount than the price we paid for it. For years Alaska has been a particularly interesting country to me, but after miles of travel in this vast Northern Territory of ours, I was more than ever impressed with its great resources, and the further fact that our governmental policy was crippling and restricting its proper and natural development. I fully believe that Alaska should be made into a colonial possession and not remain a Territory. I also believe that our Government should not engage in railway construction in Alaska, where failure can be the only result. It has seemed to me that not only was Alaska in itself worth writing about, but that political obstructions that have been placed in the path of its progress ought to be removed. My reasons, I believe, will be found good and sufficient by readers of the chapters on Alaska that follow. Book The Land of Gold Alaska Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Land of Gold Alaska Classic Reprint written by Thomas Holt Murray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Land of Gold (Alaska) Danger of England ever getting it, and he knew that in our hands it would be reasonably safe in that regard. We, of course, did not know enough to take it even at that price. Ten years later it was offered to us for five million dollars, but during that ten years we had not acquired that amount of sense, and so did not take it. During all these years it was for sale or gift to any country in the world but England; but not till 1867 was any country in the world found with sense enough - any of them had money enough - to buy it. What little of sense on that subject we had acquired by that time seemed to be in the possession of two men one of them was William H. Seward, of New York, then Secretary of State; the other was Charles Sumner, of Massachusetts, then in the United States Senate. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Alaska Purchase—denounced at the time as “Seward’s Folly” but now seen as a masterstroke—is well known in American history. But few know the rest of the story. This book aims to correct that. Lee Farrow offers here a detailed account of just what the Alaska Purchase was, how it came about, its impact at the time, and more. Farrow shows why both America and Russia had plenty of good reasons to want the sale to occur, including Russia’s desire to let go of an unprofitable, hard-to-manage colony and the belief in the United States that securing Alaska could help the nation gain control of British Columbia and generate closer trade ties with Asia . Farrow also delves into the implications of the deal for foreign policy and international diplomacy far beyond Russia and the United States at a moment when the global balance of power was in question. A thorough, readable retelling of a story we only think we know, Seward’s Folly will become the standard book on the Alaska Purchase.

Book Thirteen Years of Travel and Exploration in Alaska Classic Reprint

Download or read book Thirteen Years of Travel and Exploration in Alaska Classic Reprint written by W. H. Pierce and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating look into the incredibly rough and tumble world of prospecting for gold in Alaska in the late nineteenth century. W. H. Pierce was an explorer, gold miner, and observer of the natural world. He even describes finding fossils and wondering if their extinction may have been due to climate change. What is most remarkable was Pierce's persistence over many years despite many disappointments. Upon his return in 1889, he began working on this book. Professor James Harrison Carruth, a Yale-educated Kansas professor, was the editor.
