The concept of ALARA (As Low as Reasonably Achievable) has been developed in line with the International Commission on Radiation Protection recommendations on dose limitation. Its aim is to provide a realistic balance between the desire to keep radiation exposure to a minimum and the economic and social factors relevant to decisions on health and safety in the nuclear industry. This book contains the eight invited papers presented at the symposium, together with summaries of the discussions that took place after each of the four sessions.
