Book ALARA Principles Practice and Consequences Proceedings of the Symposium on ALARA Quantitative Techniques for Radiation Protection in the Nuclear Industry Held at The Institution of Civil Engineers London September 1986

Download or read book ALARA Principles Practice and Consequences Proceedings of the Symposium on ALARA Quantitative Techniques for Radiation Protection in the Nuclear Industry Held at The Institution of Civil Engineers London September 1986 written by J. R. A. Lakey and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1987 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Institution of Nuclear Engineers symposium on 'ALARA': Quantitative Optimization Techniques for Radiation Protection in the Nuclear Industry was held in London on 18 September 1986, and was attended by over 130 delegates from all branches of the nuclear industry. The process of quantitative optimization of radiation protection affects the design, construction and operation of nuclear installations, and is essential to all those who have to deal with the consequences to the public of radioactive emission from nuclear power facilities. The concept of ALARA (As Low as Reasonably Achievable) has been developed in line with the International Commission on Radiation Protection recommendations on dose limitation. Its aim is to provide a realistic balance between the desire to keep radiation exposure to a minimum and the economic and social factors relevant to decisions on health and safety in the nuclear industry. This book contains the eight invited papers presented at the symposium, together with summaries of the discussions that took place after each of the four sessions.

Book Generic Models for Use in Assessing the Impact of Discharges of Radioactive Substances to the Environment

Download or read book Generic Models for Use in Assessing the Impact of Discharges of Radioactive Substances to the Environment written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes an approach for assessing doses to members of the public as part of an environmental impact analysis of predictive radioactive discharges. This is achieved by using screening models which describe environmental processes in mathematical terms, producing a quantitative result.

Book Reducing Environmental Cancer Risk

Download or read book Reducing Environmental Cancer Risk written by Suzanne H. Reuben and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010-10 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though overall cancer incidence and mortality have continued to decline in recent years, cancer continues to devastate the lives of far too many Americans. In 2009 alone, 1.5 million American men, women, and children were diagnosed with cancer, and 562,000 died from the disease. There is a growing body of evidence linking environmental exposures to cancer. The Pres. Cancer Panel dedicated its 2008¿2009 activities to examining the impact of environmental factors on cancer risk. The Panel considered industrial, occupational, and agricultural exposures as well as exposures related to medical practice, military activities, modern lifestyles, and natural sources. This report presents the Panel¿s recommend. to mitigate or eliminate these barriers. Illus.

Book Sources Effects and Risks of Ionizing Radiation United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation UNSCEAR 2016 Report

Download or read book Sources Effects and Risks of Ionizing Radiation United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation UNSCEAR 2016 Report written by United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) and published by United Nations. This book was released on 2017-04-25 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report assesses the levels and effects of exposure to ionizing radiation. Scientific findings underpin radiation risk evaluation and international protection standards. This report comprises a report with two underpinning scientific annexes. The first annex recapitulates and clarifies the philosophy of science as well as the scientific knowledge for attributing observed health effects in individuals and populations to radiation exposure, and distinguishes between that and inferring risk to individuals and populations from an exposure. The second annex reviews the latest thinking and approaches to quantifying the uncertainties in assessments of risk from radiation exposure, and illustrates these approaches with application to examples that are highly pertinent to radiation protection.

Book Environmental Contamination from Uranium Production Facilities and Their Remediation

Download or read book Environmental Contamination from Uranium Production Facilities and Their Remediation written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The legacies of past uranium mining and milling continue to be of concern and require assessment and remedial action. This problem has been recognized in many parts of the world over the past three decades, but has received increased attention since the end of the Cold War. Considerable effort and resources have been expended in dealing with this legacy. However, it has to be noted that the search for uranium has covered almost all countries on the globe. The result in some countries is a legacy of numerous small scale mines and mills. For economic and other reasons, including less stringent environmental standards and awareness at the time, these operations may not have been properly closed out and made safe. The remediation strategies and techniques developed by major problem holders, such as the USA or Germany, often would be out of scale for the problems in other countries. Therefore an international workshop was organized in Lisbon from 11 to 13 February 2004 as a forum for the exchange of views and experiences of countries with smaller scale uranium mining legacies.
