Book Translation and Transformation in Modern Arabic Literature

Download or read book Translation and Transformation in Modern Arabic Literature written by Carol Bardenstein and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2005 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This path-breaking book offers a re-examination of the east-west (Egyptian-French) cultural encounter during the early period of the renaissance or nahda in 19th-century Egypt, through looking closely at the particular contact zone of literary translations, specifically some of the earliest translations of prestigious French literature into Arabic. In this unprecedented study, in contrast with views that presume a passive top-down model of cultural influence, Carol Bardenstein formulates a more complex and ambivalent model - a transculturating one. She shows how - within the translations themselves - an indigenous sensibility is asserted and elaborated, running against the grain of the apparently deferring gesture of borrowing from the French literary tradition, which was viewed by many in the Egyptian intellectual vanguard as having the prestige and cultural capital to civilize an Egypt and an Arabic literary tradition that was perceived as being belated in its development. In translations of works by La Fontaine, Bernardin de St. Pierre, Moliere and Racine, Muhammad Uthman Jalal indigenized the texts in various ways, Arabizing, Islamicizing, and Egyptianizing the textual field. Not only did this translational approach create a corpus of indigenized literary texts, but it also implicitly engaged in the process of experimenting with different possible delineations of the contours of the collective or community that was to produce what was to become modern Arabic literature. In so doing, it anticipated many later explicit ideological formulations about the nature of possible or desired configurations of collective affiliation and identification, as Arab, pan-Arab, regional Egyptian along nationalist lines, pan-Islamic etc., with the passing of Ottomanism.

Book Cultural Netizenship

Download or read book Cultural Netizenship written by James Yékú and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-03 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does social media activism in Nigeria intersect with online popular forms—from GIFs to memes to videos—and become shaped by the repressive postcolonial state that propels resistance to dominant articulations of power? James Yékú proposes the concept of "cultural netizenship"—internet citizenship and its aesthetico-cultural dimensions—as a way of being on the social web and articulating counter-hegemonic self-presentations through viral popular images. Yékú explores the cultural politics of protest selfies, Nollywood-derived memes and GIFs, hashtags, and political cartoons as visual texts for postcolonial studies, and he examines how digital subjects in Nigeria, a nation with one of the most vibrant digital spheres in Africa, deconstruct state power through performed popular culture on social media. As a rubric for the new digital genres of popular and visual expressions on social media, cultural netizenship indexes the digital everyday through the affordances of the participatory web. A fascinating look at the intersection of social media and popular culture performance, Cultural Netizenship reveals the logic of remediation that is central to both the internet's remix culture and the generative materialism of African popular arts.

Book Genome and Proteome in Oncology

Download or read book Genome and Proteome in Oncology written by Fotini Tzortzatou Stathopoulou and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2005 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nature of cancer disease, its probable causes, and the molecular and cellular mechanisms through which malignant tumours develop, have only recently begun to be understood in any appreciable detail. Cancer is fundamentally a disease of the genome, arising from dynamic changes occurring within DNA during the lifetime of the cell e.g. deletions, amplifications, point mutations, translocations, that can occur in any cell and that may interact in a variety of cellular pathways. The imbalance in the interplay between genetic and environmental factors can initiate malignancy. The determination of the human genome sequence is acclaimed as one of the great achievements made possible by the rapid progress in the available molecular biology tools achieved during the last few years. The sequence of the human genome promises to unveil invaluable information useful for the development of novel approaches in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer disease. This book includes part of the work of international experts on the most up-to-date developments of various aspects of research on genome and proteome in oncology. The scientists suggest that the genetic key to human complexity lies not in the number of genes but in how gene parts are used to build different products in a process of the mRNA transcript called alternative splicing.

Mr Macho, Mockingbird, and the Mega Ninja were just ordinary college student/superheroes doing ordinary student things like attending class and ordinary superhero things like foiling bank robberies and catching drug dealers until one night when they returned to their apartment and found a strange old man with a mystical amulet sitting on their couch. Unfortunately, while he can teach them how to teleport to other planets, he has no idea how to repair the prison. Did the amulet pick correctly this time, and will they figure out what they need to do before it's too late?
