Book Baal St George and Khidr

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert D. Miller II
  • Publisher : Penn State Press
  • Release : 2020-05-11
  • ISBN : 1646020219
  • Pages : 107 pages

Download or read book Baal St George and Khidr written by Robert D. Miller II and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2020-05-11 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Western tradition, St. George is known as the dragon slayer. In the Middle East, he is called Khidr (“Green One”), and in addition to being a dragon slayer, he is also somehow the prophet Elijah. In this book, Robert D. Miller II untangles these complicated connections and reveals how, especially in his Middle Eastern guise, St. George is a reincarnation of the Canaanite storm god Baal, another “Green One” who in Ugaritic texts slays dragons. Combining art history, theology, and archeology, this multidisciplinary study demystifies the identity of St. George in his various incarnations, laying bare the processes by which these identifications merged and diverged. Miller traces the origins of this figure in Arabic and Latin texts and explores the possibility that Middle Eastern shrines to St. George lie on top of ancient shrines of the Canaanite storm god Baal. Miller examines these holy places, particularly in modern Israel and around Mount Hermon on the Syrian-Lebanese-Israeli border, and makes the convincing case that direct continuity exists from the Baal of antiquity to the St. George/Khidr of Christian lore. Convincingly argued and thoroughly researched, this study makes a unique contribution to such diverse areas as ancient Near Eastern studies, Roman history and religion, Christian hagiography and iconography, Quranic studies, and Arab folk religion.

Book excerpt: This is the most accessible work in English on the greatest mystical poet of Islam, providing a survey of the basic Sufi and Islamic doctrines concerning God and the world, the role of man in the cosmos, the need for religion, man's ultimate becoming, the states and stations of the mystical ascent to God, and the means whereby literature employs symbols to express "unseen" realities. William Chittick translates into English for the first time certain aspects of Rumi's work. He selects and rearranges Rumi's poetry and prose in order to leave aside unnecessary complications characteristic of other English translations and to present Rumi's ideas in an orderly fashion, yet in his own words. Thorough, nontechnical introductions to each chapter, and selections that gradually present a greater variety of terms and images, make this work easily accessible to those interested in the spirituality of any tradition.

Book Where the Two Seas Meet

Download or read book Where the Two Seas Meet written by Hugh Talat Halman and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining how three medieval Sufi Qur’an commentators explained the story of Moses’ journey with al-Khidr, this volume conveys various teachings about the path of Sufism and the nature of spiritual authority. These commentaries, translated for the first time, discuss essential themes of Sufism as written by practicing Sufi masters. As the text reflects on both the social and psychological dimensions of the master–disciple relationship in Sufism and distinguish between the instructing master (shaykh al-ta’lim) and the mentoring master (shaykh al-suhba), a comparison is also made between the Sufi interpretation of death, immortality, compassion, and inner knowledge and Ernest Becker’s theory of the denial of death and the aspiration for both physical and symbolic immortality.

Book Insights Into Christian Esoterism

Download or read book Insights Into Christian Esoterism written by René Guénon and published by Sophia Perennis. This book was released on 2005-05 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of René Guénon's lifelong quests was to discover, or revive, the esoteric, initiatory dimension of the Christian tradition. In the present volume, along with its companion volume The Esoterism of Dante, Guénon undertakes to establish that the three parts of The Divine Comedy represent the stages of initiatic realization, exploring the parallels between the symbolism of the Commedia and that of Freemasonry, Rosicrucianism, and Christian Hermeticism, and illustrating Dante's knowledge of traditional sciences unknown to the moderns: the sciences of numbers, of cosmic cycles, and of sacred astrology. In these works Guénon also touches on the all-important question of medieval esoterism and discusses the role of sacred languages and the principle of initiation in the Christian tradition, as well as such esoteric Christian themes and organizations as the Holy Grail, the Guardians of the Holy Land, the Sacred Heart, the Fedeli d'Amore and the 'Courts of Love', and the Secret Language of Dante. One chapter in the present volume, 'Christianity and Initiation', is of special interest with regard to the history of the Traditionalist School. When first published as an article, it gave rise to some controversy because Guénon here reaffirmed his denial of the efficacy of the Christian sacraments as rites of initiation, a point of divergence between the teachings of Guénon and those of other key perennialist thinkers. Both The Esoterism of Dante and Insights into Christian Esoterism will be of inestimable value to all who are struggling to come to terms with the fullness of the Christian tradition.

Book Moses in the Qur an and Islamic Exegesis

Download or read book Moses in the Qur an and Islamic Exegesis written by Brannon M. Wheeler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relating the Muslim understanding of Moses in the Qur'an to the Epic of Gilgamesh, Alexander Romances, Aramaic Targums, Rabbinic Bible exegesis, and folklore from the ancient and medieval Mediterranean, this book shows how Muslim scholars authorize and identify themselves through allusions to the Bible and Jewish tradition. Exegesis of Qur'an 18:60-82 shows how Muslim exegetes engage Biblical theology through interpretation of the ancient Israelites, their prophets, and their Torah. This Muslim use of a scripture shared with Jews and Christians suggests fresh perspectives for the history of religions, Biblical studies, cultural studies, and Jewish-Arabic studies.

Book Gog and Magog in Early Eastern Christian and Islamic Sources

Download or read book Gog and Magog in Early Eastern Christian and Islamic Sources written by Emeri J. van Donzel and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexander's Alleged Wall Against Gog and Magog, often connected with the enclosure of the apocalyptic people, was a widespread theme among Syriac Christians in Mesopotamia. In the ninth century Sallam the Interpreter dictated an account of his search for the barrier to the Arab geographer Ibn Khurradadhbih. The reliability of Sallam's journey from Samarra to Western China and back (842-45), however, has always been a highly contested issue. Van Donzel and Schmidt consider the travel account as historical. This volume presents a translation of the source while at the same time it carefully looks into other Eastern Christian and Muslim traditions of the famous lore. A comprehensive survey reconstructs the political and topographical data. As so many other examples, this story pays witness to the influence of the Syriac Christian tradition on Koran and Muslim Traditions.

Book excerpt: The Chronicles Of Eridu is a modern day tale based on the Kemetian (Egyptian) myth of the Neteru (gods) Pa Neter Asar-Enki (Osiris), Ma Netert Aset (Isis) and their remarkable son Heru-Marduk (Horus). And his mission to restore balance to the fallen planet Eridu (Earth). To assist in its evolutionary ascension to 4th dimensional reality as the planet Tiamaat. In order to succeed in his mission set out for him by the elders of The United Confederacy of Ra, Heru-Marduk has to confront his uncle and arch rival Seth-Yurugu who has other plans for Eridu. The tale is filled with ancient secrets, magical spells and rituals, used by the opposing forces of Heru-Marduk and Seth-Yurugu to gain the upper hand in the spiritual battle for the destiny of Eridu and its inhabitants. "If your mind is denied meaningful input from natural interaction such as isolation or seclusion of any type self imposed or otherwise for example. Then nature steps in and causes the mind to dream and generate meaningful concepts to help it escape its confinement. Such self generated concepts are usually works of genius and should be studied, valued and evaluated extensively as diamonds found in a fish net. It was in such circumstances that the Chronicles of Eridu was written and I had nothing else to fall upon but my education both academic and experiential. I know the importance of education especially amongst the youths as Education develops the intellect; and the intellect distinguishes man from other creatures. It is education that enables man to harness nature and utilize her resources for the well-being and improvement of his life. The key for the betterment and completeness of modern living is education. But, ' Man cannot live by bread alone '. Man, after all, is also composed of intellect and soul. Therefore, education in general, and higher education in particular, must aim to provide, beyond the physical, food for the intellect and soul. That education which ignores man's intrinsic nature, and neglects his intellect and reasoning power cannot be considered true education. This why I ask you to follow me in supporting the work done by the charity SOS Africa as we do not want a lost uneducated generation of future leaders. Therefore as a token of appreciation of their outstanding work I will donate a 1.00 from every copy of "The Chronicles of Eridu" sold to SOS Africa" Christosfari Ogidih author "The Chronicles of Eridu" Link for SOS Africa http://www.sosafrica.com/

Book The Crucifix on Mecca s Front Porch

Download or read book The Crucifix on Mecca s Front Porch written by David Pinault and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2018-08-22 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book on Islam has an unusual perspective. It argues that a critically minded examination of Islam can help Christians achieve a deeper appreciation of the unique truths of their own faith. It draws on the author’s personal experiences living in Islamic countries and his fieldwork with persecuted Christian-minority communities, especially in Pakistan, Yemen, Egypt, and Indonesia. It includes the author’s own original translations of Islamic texts in Arabic, Persian, and Urdu, as well as primary-source materials in Latin that were written by Christian participants in the Crusades. The author focuses on Muslim interactions with the Christian tradition. He examines and takes issue with the misguided approach of those Christians and Muslims who, in the interests of Christian-Muslim rapprochement, minimize theological differences between the two faiths, especially in the area of Christology. Such attempts at rapport, he writes, do a profound disservice to both religions. Illustrating the Muslim view of Christ with Islamic polemical texts from the eleventh to the twenty-first centuries, the author draws on Hans Urs von Balthasar, and other theologians of kenotic Christology, to show how Islamic condemnations of divine "weakness" and "neediness" can deepen our appreciation of what is most uniquely Christian in our vision of Jesus as God-made-man, who voluntarily experiences weakness, suffering, and death in solidarity with all human beings. Both timely and urgently needed, The Crucifix on Mecca's Front Porch invites readers to reflect on the stark differences between Christianity and Islam and to appreciate the uniqueness of the Christian faith.
