Download or read book Dhrupad Tradition and Performance in Indian Music written by Ritwik Sanyal and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-02-16 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dhrupad is believed to be the oldest style of classical vocal music performed today in North India. This detailed study of the genre considers the relationship between the oral tradition, its transmission from generation to generation, and its re-creation in performance. There is an overview of the historical development of the dhrupad tradition and its performance style from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries, and of the musical lineages that carried it forward into the twentieth century, followed by analyses of performance techniques, processes and styles. The authors examine the relationship between the structures provided by tradition and their realization by the performer to throw light on the nature of tradition and creativity in Indian music; and the book ends with an account of the ‘revival’ movement of the late twentieth century that re-established the genre in new contexts. Augmented with an analytical transcription of a complete dhrupad performance, this is the first book-length study of an Indian vocal genre to be co-authored by an Indian practitioner and a Western musicologist.

Download or read book The Spanda Tattva written by Swami Akhandanand Saraswati and published by Srikanth s. This book was released on with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tradition of the siddha (those who have obtained their goal; enlightened Mahatmas), the name 'spanda' was used for the parama tattva (supreme essence, the Brahman) since ancient times. Other names used for this Tattva are, shuddhaatmaa (the pristine Atma), Shankara, Shiva, svabhaava (own nature), gnaataa (the knower), and saamaanya (the common factor, or general principle). It is also known as the Kashmiri pratyabhignaadarshan (the consciousness that illuminates everything. The 'Sarvadarshan Samhita' calls it the 'Shiva Darshan' (a glimpse of Shiva, who we revere). This corresponds with Abhinav Gupta's sadhanaa-paddhati (method used for spiritual progress). Acharya Bhatta Kallata obtained its rahasya (quintessence; hidden indications) from his Guru, Vasugupta, and composed fifty kaarikaa (philosophical verses) as a summery. Utpalacharya wrote a commentary on it in the middle of the tenth century. He called it, 'Spanda Pradeepika'. It is in Sanskrit. It has been published just one, in 1898, by the Medical Hall Press in Varanasi. This is now presented in a succinct form, for Hindi readers.

Book excerpt: Dear Reader, The vast majority of men know not the existence of the mind and its operations. Even the so-called educated persons know very little of the mind subjectively or of its nature and operations. They have only heard of a mind. It is only the Yogins and those who practise meditation and introspection that know the existence of the mind, its nature, ways and subtle workings. They know also the various methods of subduing the mind. Mind is one of the Ashta-Prakritis. “Earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, reason and egoism—these constitute the eightfold division of My Nature” Mind is nothing but Atma-Sakti. It is brain that wants rest (sleep), but not the mind. A Yogi who has controlled the mind never sleeps. He gets pure rest from meditation itself. In this book I am going to explain the mystery of mind. Its origination and influence, how mind is different from soul and roolts of all evils in mind. Also I am discussing Psychic states, power of mind its perception and how to control mind. I welcome you all to my journey of spirituality and mysterious world of secrets. Regards, Saket Shah

Download or read book Pali English Dictionary written by T.W. Rhys Davids and published by Motilal Banarsidass. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 756 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The merits and demerits of the work will be sufficiently plain even from the first fascicles. But one or two remarks are necessary to make the position of my colleague and myself clear. We have given throughout the Sanskrit roots corresponding to the Pali roots, and have omitted the latter. It may be objected that this is a strange method to use in a Pali dictionary, especially as the vernacular on which Pali is based had never passed through the stage of Sanskrit. That may be so; and it may not be possible, historically, that any Pali word in the canon could have been actually derived from the corresponding Sanskrit word. Nevertheless the Sanskrit form, though arisen quite independently, may throw light upon the Pali form; and as Pali roots have not yet been adequately studied in Europe, the plan adopted will probably, at least for the present, be more useful. Still, the work is essentially preliminary. There is a large number of words of which we do not know the derivation. There is a still larger number of which the derivation does not give the meaning, but rather the reverse. It is so in every living language. Who could guess, from the derivation, the complicated meaning of such words as ñconscienceî, ñemotionî, ñdispositionî? The derivation would be as likely to mislead as to guide. We have made much progress since then. As the Pali Text Society began issuing editions and translations of the Pali Canon and Commentaries in quick succession, Rhys Davids conceived the idea of the compilation of an exhaustive dictionary of Pali, based on the voluminous basic material that was being brought to light. the work took more than twenty years of devoted labor but before his death in 1922, Rhys Davids had the satisfaction of seeing its first volume published. In four volumes issued over 1921-25 the Dictionary contains every Pali word with its Sanskrit root identified and meanings given in English. Carrying over 1,50,000 textual references, the work holds the field, even today, as the best Pali-English Dictionary.

Download or read book Religion Mysticism and Transcultural Entanglements in Modern South Asia written by Soumen Mukherjee and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zusammenfassung: "An insightful study of the spiritual quest undertaken by an impressive array of South Asian intellectuals who reappraised the very meaning of religion. Far from being a mode of inward-looking cultural defense, Soumen Mukherjee convincingly interprets mysticism and spirituality as a cosmopolitan pursuit by creative thinkers delving into devotional traditions of India's past while responding to global challenges of the early twentieth century." -- Sugata Bose, Gardiner Professor of Oceanic History and Affairs, Harvard University "A detailed and erudite study of the way in which mysticism and spirituality came to dominate Indian forms of selfhood and self-making from the first half of the twentieth century. Part of a global debate spanning Asia, Europe, and America, interest in the esoteric and metaphysical distinguished Indian thinkers from their peers in other countries while nevertheless joining them in conversation to make for a truly global debate on the meaning and freedom of the self." -- Faisal Devji, Professor of Indian History, University of Oxford and Fellow, St Antony's College "In India, as in many other Asian contexts, claims of modernity have sat uneasily with histories and traditions of mysticism and spirituality... This outstanding book helps us break out of such unproductive dichotomies by focusing on religious and cultural discussions in India in the early twentieth century... Yet, this riveting book is neither conventionally parochial nor fashionably global-- it hypostasizes 'spiritual cosmopolitans' situating thinkers within contexts of transregional religious movements and networks." --Samita Sen, Vere Harmsworth Professor of Imperial and Naval History, University of Cambridge and Fellow, Trinity College This book explores the location of spirituality and mysticism in modern Indian religious and intellectual life. It examines select personalities and their ideas since the early twentieth century, their role in the interwoven spheres of socio-religious and political thought, and in burgeoning spiritual imaginaries, often at the intersection of academic and public discourse. As part of a global ecumene connected by affective bonds, these spiritual cosmopolitans often defied binary frameworks (East/ West; imperial core/ periphery; colonizer/ colonized), and in the upshot reappraised and recast the very concept of religion in response to overarching 'this-worldly' exigencies. Soumen Mukherjee teaches History at Presidency University in Kolkata. He is the author of Ismailism and Islam in Modern South Asia: Community and Identity in the Age of Religious Internationals (2017).
