Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2009 in the subject Business economics - Offline Marketing and Online Marketing, grade: High Distinction, Monash University Malaysia, Sunway Campus, course: Strategic Management, language: English, abstract: Air Asia is a low-cost carrier based in Kuala, Lumpur Malaysia which flies to over 66 successfully penetrated destinations in 18 countries worldwide. Nevertheless, this innovative organisation continuously seeks new potential markets for its investment. However, not all countries are an attractive prospect for a new investment. This book presents an analysis on the attractiveness of the South African airline industry along with Air Asia’s current internal states and strategies in an attempt to rationalise the viability of an investment decision into the state. The data collected entails from secondary sources ranging from academic journal articles, organisational websites and reports, online newspapers, to various databases. The main findings includes a favourable yet challenging immediate and macroeconomic environment conditions in South Africa, supporting internal strengths that were aligned with most key success factors for the investment plan taking into account certain drawbacks identified, and a well-positioned business-level and corporate-level strategy to take on a new investment in the state. It is concluded that the South African airline industry is a viable market in which Air Asia is able to weather those obstacles and achieve great success. Nonetheless, Air Asia is recommended to play safe and currently penetrate the industry on a smaller scale before operating in a larger scale.

Book Barriers to Entry for Low Cost Carriers in the South African Airline Industry

Download or read book Barriers to Entry for Low Cost Carriers in the South African Airline Industry written by Anthea Paelo and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the barriers to entry and expansion of competitor airlines in South Africa. The exit of 1Time from the market as well as the experience of FlySafair, a recent entrant, are used to draw lessons about competitive conditions and constraints that new airlines face in the market. The assessment shows that while the exogenous barriers to entry are not prohibitively high in South Africa (partly evidenced by the number of entrants), a history of repeated anti-competitive conduct by the national carrier, South Africa Airways, has contributed to these challenges. The analysis of price data covering 2014 and 2015 and information drawn from detailed firm-level interviews demonstrates the positive effects of entry in the South African market, including through reducing prices and increasing frequencies to smaller routes which has benefits for local economies. There is preliminary evidence that the entry of LCCs has also contributed to increased passenger volumes, although there are limitations in the data which is available to assess this further.

Book Open Skies for Africa

Download or read book Open Skies for Africa written by Charles E Schlumberger and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2010-06-23 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Africa, where poor roads, ports, and railways often constrain efficient transportation, air transport holds great potential as a lever for economic growth and development. Yet Africa has suffered several decades of inefficient air services. Uncompetitive flag carriers, set up by newly independent African states, offered primarily intercontinental flights, while the domestic air service market remained underdeveloped and underserved. The 1999 pan-African treaty on liberalization of access to air transport markets, the Yamoussoukro Decision, attempted to address these shortcomings. Yet a decade later, only partial liberalization has been achieved. 'Open Skies for Africa: Implementing the Yamoussoukro Decision' reviews progress made in carrying out the treaty and suggests ways in which the liberalization process can be encouraged. The book analyzes the completed and still-pending steps toward implementation of the Yamoussoukro Decision, both on a pan-African level and within various regions. Special focus is given to the challenges posed by the poor aviation safety and security standards that exist in most African countries. Finally, the book measures the impact that certain policy steps of the Yamoussoukro Decision have had and evaluates the economic significance of air transportation and its full liberalization in Africa. The book concludes that the process of liberalizing African air services must continue, and provides policy recommendations for the way forward.

Book excerpt: "Travel is no longer a past-time but a colossal industry, arguably one of the biggest in the world and second only to oil in importance for many poor countries. One out of 12 people in the world are employed by the tourism industry which contributes $6.5 trillion to the world's economy. To investigate the size and effect of this new industry, Elizabeth Becker traveled the globe. She speaks to the Minister of Tourism of Zambia who thinks licensing foreigners to kill wild animals is a good way to make money and then to a Zambian travel guide who takes her to see the rare endangered sable antelope. She travels to Venice where community groups are fighting to stop the tourism industry from pushing them out of their homes, to France where officials have made tourism their number one industry to save their cultural heritage; and on cruises speaking to waiters who earn $60 a month--then on to Miami to interview their CEO. Becker's sharp depiction reveals travel as a product; nations as stewards. Seeing the tourism industry from the inside out, the world offers a dizzying range of travel options but very few quiet getaways"--

Book Enforcing Competition Rules in South Africa

Download or read book Enforcing Competition Rules in South Africa written by David Lewis and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating book describes and analyses the development of competition law in South Africa, promoting a deeper understanding of the development of this foundational economic law within its specific national, social and economic context. Enforcing Competition Rules in South Africa is a clear and insightful account of the establishment and first decade of one of the most successful competition law institutions to have mushroomed over the past 15 years. David Lewis believes that, while there is much to learn from international scholarship and jurisprudence and from participation in the various multinational initiatives in this field, competition law and its institutions have to be understood within their national economic and social contexts. Drawing strongly on case law and enforcement experiences, this book will appeal to academics, researchers and practitioners of competition law and economics.
