Book Agriculture Poverty and Reform in Iran RLE Iran D

Download or read book Agriculture Poverty and Reform in Iran RLE Iran D written by Mohammad Amad and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2012-04-27 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As in many developing countries, the prospects for land reform in Iran seemed promising. It was expected to improve rural poverty and stimulate agricultural development by replacing the traditional landlord-peasant system with more peasant-biased, modern farming. This book assesses the economic consequences of land reform, focusing particularly on its effect on the living standards of the rural poor. Amid describes a ‘biomodal’ system of large and small farms that emerged after the reform. Large farms, with government support, modernized and grew more profitable cash crops, whereas small farms found difficulty in obtaining credit and continued to rely on traditional techniques and staple food crops. Land reform was not, the author argues a success for the majority of the Iranian rural population who experienced virtually no improvement in living standards and a growth of rural inequality as a result.

Download or read book State and Rural Development in the Post Revolutionary Iran written by A. Shakoori and published by Springer. This book was released on 2001-05-04 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rural reform policy has been an important part of the government policy in post-revolutionary Iran. This book seeks to examine the post-revolutionary rural policies and their socio-economic impact on rural people. After reviewing the main debates on rural development literature and providing the historical background of agrarian change in the pre-revolutionary era, it examines the post-revolutionary rural reforms in separate parts: the effects of the government agricultural policies on agricultural performance and the post-revolutionary reorganisational policies and the impact of rural strategies on the socio-economy of the rural life at village level.

Book Islamic Republic of Iran

Download or read book Islamic Republic of Iran written by Weltbank and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report addresses key structural, institutional, and sectoral policy impediments to achieving a higher, and sustained economic growth in the sector, and poverty reduction in rural areas of Iran. It focuses mainly on an assessment of agricultural development outcomes, a discussion of the agricultural policy agenda, and provides recommendations for future policy dialogue between the Bank, and the Government of Iran. On examining development outcomes, the report assesses the agricultural sector's contribution, which - though in decline - has displayed rapid growth (4.9 percent) during the course of the 1990's; identifies the strong rural content of poverty in Iran, where the proportion of the rural population living in households with income below the poverty line, is the highest; and, examines the increasing pressures on the natural resources, with deforestation and erosion reaching alarming proportions. Policy in the sector has been driven largely by the need to rely on domestic production, to meet the needs of a rapidly increasing demand. However, and despite significant rural development achievements, an inadequate market structure, and organization for commodity markets, land fragmentation, and related social issues, are hindering further development in agriculture and rural areas. Iran's agricultural exports face several constraints that arise from conflicting domestic policies relating to production, storage, distribution, food security, and pricing concerns. In the short-term, the Bank could provide input into the development of a Strategic Framework for Sustainable Agricultural and Rural Development, in the form of high impact focused technical studies, following the approach used with the energy subsidies. This could lead eventually to a comprehensive, and participatory Agricultural and Rural Development Strategy Note. Knowledge sharing with the private, and public sector requiring first in-depth studies, could be provided before putting in place a series of show-case projects, to transfer international best-practices in areas such as, marketing, land reform, or human development.
