Download or read book Negotiating Trade written by John S. Odell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-02-16 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Negotiations between governments shape the world political economy and in turn the lives of people everywhere. Developing countries have become far more influential in talks in the World Trade Organization, including infamous stalemates in Seattle in 1999 and Cancún in 2003, as well as bilateral and regional talks like those that created NAFTA. Yet social science does not understand well enough the process of negotiation, and least of all the roles of developing countries, in these situations. This 2006 book sheds light on three aspects of this otherwise opaque process: the strategies developing countries use; coalition formation; and how they learn and influence other participants' beliefs. This book will be valuable for many readers interested in negotiation, international political economy, trade, development, global governance, or international law. Developing country negotiators and those who train them will find practical insights on how to avoid pitfalls and negotiate better.

Book The Fault Lines of Farm Policy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jonathan Coppess
  • Publisher : U of Nebraska Press
  • Release : 2018-12-01
  • ISBN : 1496212525

Download or read book The Fault Lines of Farm Policy written by Jonathan Coppess and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2018-12-01 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the intersection of the growing national conversation about our food system and the long-running debate about our government's role in society is the complex farm bill. American farm policy, built on a political coalition of related interests with competing and conflicting demands, has proven incredibly resilient despite development and growth. In The Fault Lines of Farm Policy Jonathan Coppess analyzes the legislative and political history of the farm bill, including the evolution of congressional politics for farm policy. Disputes among the South, the Great Plains, and the Midwest form the primordial fault line that has defined the debate throughout farm policy's history. Because these regions formed the original farm coalition and have played the predominant roles throughout, this study concentrates on the three major commodities produced in these regions: cotton, wheat, and corn. Coppess examines policy development by the political and congressional interests representing these commodities, including basic drivers such as coalition building, external and internal pressures on the coalition and its fault lines, and the impact of commodity prices. This exploration of the political fault lines provides perspectives for future policy discussions and more effective policy outcomes.

Book The Political Formulation of Policy Solutions

Download or read book The Political Formulation of Policy Solutions written by Zittoun, Philippe and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2021-07-23 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, an international group of public policy scholars revisit the stage of formulating policy solutions by investigating the basic political dimensions inherent to this critical phase of the policy process. The book focuses attention on how policy makers craft their policy proposals, match them with public problems, debate their feasibility to build coalitions and dispute their acceptability as serious contenders for government consideration. Based on international case studies, this book is an invitation to examine the uncertain and often indeterminate aspects of policy-making using qualitative analysis embedded in a political perspective.
