Book excerpt: The persistence and the relatively strong electoral performance of peasant parties in some Central Eastern European countries appears puzzling. The paper investigates the strategies of these parties in the light of social and economic modernization. As a successful model for agrarian adaptation the Scandinavian Center parties' move to 'catch-all' strategies are contrasted with the Hungarian FKGP and the Polish PSt. It becomes clear that the incentive structure for these parties in CEE transition societies is much different and therefore less conducive to this kind of adaptation. In fact, rather a rightist-populist retreat and in the Police case the reliance on a continuously strong peasant vote in addition to seeking state resources is being pursued.

Yet the implications of this observations are far from evident. Was life in the old peasant society characterized by great and enduring economic inequalities? Or were resources redistributed within the community in order to better adjust to the changing needs and abilities of different households? In what ways did the principles of resource distribution among peasants change as the Swedish society was transformed during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries? By studying resource holding among peasants in a Swedish parish over a time period of 200 years, this dissertation contributes to our understanding of the social structure of the small rural communities that once dominated not only Sweden, but also most of medieval and early modern Europe.

These are some of the questions addressed by Göran Hoppe and John Langton in this 1995 study of rural change in Sweden. Eschewing both traditional narrow empiricism, and the recent trend to over-employ modern social theory, the authors have carefully combined theories about the transition from peasantry to capitalism with meticulous analysis of the abundant Swedish records. In doing so, they reveal the wide geographical variety and rich socioeconomic complexity of the changes which occurred in the process of modernization in the nineteenth century.

Declining rates of emigration are moderately associated with the development of urban-industrialization in Scandinavia toward the end of the 19th century. Still, the major explanation of the decline of emigration is argued to be less a response to new urban opportunities than the end result of the transformation of rural, peasant classes and the decay of the diffusion process. In this volume economic change, agricultural development, and the course of the demographic transition are separately considered to isolate the causes underlying the emigration. The social historical context is examined with an eye toward casting the results of this study in a broader light. Those lessons learned in the study of Scandinavian experience are applicable to similar processes currently unfolding in contemporary developing countries.
