Book excerpt: What are the challenges architects face when designing dwelling spaces of a limited size? And what can these projects tell us about architecture – and architectural principles – in general? In BIG little house, award-winning architect Donna Kacmar introduces twenty real-life examples of small houses. Each project is under 1,000 square feet (100 square meters) in size and, brought together, the designs reveal an attitude towards materiality, light, enclosure and accommodation which is unique to minimal dwellings. While part of a trend to address growing concerns about minimising consumption and lack of affordable housing, the book demonstrates that small dwellings are not always simply the result of budget constraints but constitute a deliberate design strategy in their own right. Highly illustrated and in full-colour throughout, each example is based on interviews with the original architect and accompanied by detailed floor plans. This ground-breaking, beautifully designed text offers practical guidance to any professional architect or homeowner interested in small scale projects.

Download or read book Designer Suburbs written by Judith O'Callaghan and published by NewSouth. This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1950s, 60s and 70s architects like Harry Seidler, Robin Boyd, Ken Woolley, Michael Dysart and Graeme Gunn applied their talents to project homes, bringing high-end design to the suburbs. Backed by Pettit & Sevitt, Merchant Builders and other project builders, architects created small, deceptively simple houses which transformed the look of suburbia. Today, the distance between the architectural profession and suburban housing has never been greater, with Australia’s super-sized, energy-guzzling project homes the biggest in the world. With photographs by Max Dupain, David Moore, Wolfgang Sievers and Eric Sierins alongside original plans, Designer Suburbs explores the relationship between architects, builders and affordable housing since 1900 and the lessons we can learn from twentieth-century designer suburbs.

Book Houses Robert A M Stern Architects

Download or read book Houses Robert A M Stern Architects written by Gary L. Brewer and published by The Monacelli Press, LLC. This book was released on 2021-01-19 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than fifty years, Robert A.M. Stern Architects has designed extraordinary houses and residences around the world, each suffused with a rich understanding of traditional architecture and an intuitive sense of how to shape a home to the needs of modern life. Many of the firm's important early commissions were houses, and while RAMSA has since evolved into an internationally renowned firm with an extraordinarily broad portfolio, an unflagging dedication to timeless residential design has remained a cornerstone of the practice. In Houses: Robert A.M. Stern Architects, RAMSA's residential Partners--Roger H. Seifter, Randy M. Correll, Grant F. Marani, and Gary L. Brewer--offer an intimate look at RAMSA houses from the last ten years and explore how these residences embody the spirit of place and find harmony between the traditional and the contemporary. A 424-page visual feast of rich, full-color photographs and elegant drawings, the book presents a selection of 17 homes that showcase RAMSA's mastery of diverse styles and highlight the firm's collaboration with leading interior designers, landscape architects, craftspeople, and builders from around the world. Featured are a rambling oceanside retreat in East Hampton; a mountain penthouse in the Rocky Mountains; a lakeside cottage in the Midwest; an urbane Park Avenue apartment; an elegant Mediterranean Revival villa in Fort Lauderdale; and a house in Singapore in that city's distinctive "Black-and-White" style. Together, the homes epitomize the quality, craftsmanship, and undeniable presence that define every RAMSA residence. With every page, readers will gain a deeper understanding of how RAMSA's architects honor context and time-honored design principles while always looking to the future, infusing established tradition with fresh life and anticipating how each home will grow, change, and evolve over the years.

Book A House is Not Just a House

Download or read book A House is Not Just a House written by Tatiana Bilbao and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A House Is Not Just a House argues precisely that. The book traces Tatiana Bilbao's diverse work on housing ranging from large-scale social projects to single-family luxury homes. These projects offer a way of thinking about the limits of housing: where it begins and where it ends. Regardless of type, her work advances an argument on housing that is simultaneously expansive and minimal, inseparable from the broader environment outside of it and predicated on the fundamental requirements of living. Working within the turbulent history of social housing in Mexico, Bilbao argues for participating even when circumstances are less than ideal--and from this participation she is able to propose specific strategies learned in Mexico for producing housing elsewhere. A House Is Not Just a House includes a recent lecture by Bilbao at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation, as well as reflections from fellow practitioners and scholars, including Amale Andraos, Gabriela Etchegaray, Hilary Sample, and Ivonne Santoyo-Orozco.

Book excerpt: In the early 1980's with the customary dearth of commissions for a young architectural practice I had designed a series of prototypical houses. These were specifically affordable houses, houses that could be built inexpensively, but without the onus attached to "cheap housing." Fundamental to the design was the notion that these dwellings should have resonance with what is deeply recognized in all peoples as "house." If you ask a child to draw a picture of a house he will draw the same shape no matter what sort of dwelling he lives in. It does not matter if he lives in a city apartment or a mobile home the pictogram will be of a square building with a pitched roof, sometimes with a chimney and a curl of smoke ascending to a sky with a smiling sun. That is "house" and I believe that the farther the designer strays from that subconscious prototype the less it becomes house. On that premise I designed a series of houses based on a 20 foot by 40 plan, a dimension we had discovered was the most practical in terms of building. This was America and all building materials there come in units of four feet, divisions or multiples of that dimension, so using that module automatically induced a cost savings. We had also discovered that dimension gave room sizes that were usable and practical. To that we added a 45° pitched roof, a diagonal cut of a piece of plywood with no waste, again a practical and cost saving gesture. At that time my friends Massimo and Lella Vignelli came to visit me in my studio in Boston, Massachusetts. Always my most trusted critics and mentors I showed them the collection of designs. Massimo became very excited about them and immediately seized upon the accessibility of the design to a user. These were in his words "friendly houses" - houses that welcomed and celebrated the idea of "house" without compromising their modernity. Massimo noted that the concept, indeed, the word "friendly" as applied to an object was unique to the English language and that these houses with their simple geometry and pitched roofs embodied the idea. He christened them "Friendly Houses" and proposed a book, a portfolio of the designs and, being Massimo Vignelli world-class designer, he immediately designed the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Designs for Living, Roger H. Seifter, Randy M. Correll, Grant F. Marani, and Gary L. Brewer, who lead the residential practice at Robert A.M. Stern Architects, present fifteen houses the firm has completed over the past ten years. From contemporary interpretations of the shingle style to robust Mediterranean designs, the houses are stylistically diverse reflecting RAMSA’s deep knowledge of history and precedent. Each partner provides insight into the design process and his individual approach to working with clients. Houses are located in dramatic settings from Napa and Sonoma to the spectacular coastline of the Hamptons and New England. Whether overlooking the ocean or nestled into the mountainside, these remarkable houses reveal the architects’ emphasis on the importance of context and their dedication to exploring the nature of place and environment. Each house invokes the vernacular architectural heritage particular to its region while gracefully reflecting its natural surroundings. Connecting contemporary lifestyles to traditional American aesthetics, these residences are exceptional both for their timelessness and their ability to evoke a conversation with the past—a dialogue the RAMSA partners believe lies at the heart of architecture.
