Download or read book The Effect of Simulated Icing on Propeller Performance written by Blake W. Corson and published by . This book was released on 1946 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tests of a 10-foot-diameter three-blade Curtiss 89301-15 propeller with Clark Y blade sections have been conducted in the Langley 16-foot high-speed tunnel in order to determine the effect of simulated iceon the aerodynamic characteristics of the propeller. The irregular coat of cement and fabric was used on the blades to simulate in outline and thickness a formation of glaze ice that might be formed in flight. The propellers were tested on a new 2000-horsepower dynamometer, a brief description of which is included. All tests were made at a rotational speed of 1800 rpm for blade angles of 20, 25, 35, and 40 degrees at the 42-inch radius and at airspeeds varying from 120 to 420 miles per hour. The results are representative of full-scale constant-speed propeller operation.
Download or read book Aircraft Propulsion and Gas Turbine Engines written by Ahmed F. El-Sayed and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 1448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aircraft Propulsion and Gas Turbine Engines, Second Edition builds upon the success of the book’s first edition, with the addition of three major topic areas: Piston Engines with integrated propeller coverage; Pump Technologies; and Rocket Propulsion. The rocket propulsion section extends the text’s coverage so that both Aerospace and Aeronautical topics can be studied and compared. Numerous updates have been made to reflect the latest advances in turbine engines, fuels, and combustion. The text is now divided into three parts, the first two devoted to air breathing engines, and the third covering non-air breathing or rocket engines.
Download or read book General Aviation Aircraft Design written by Snorri Gudmundsson and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2021-10-31 with total page 1146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General Aviation Aircraft Design, Second Edition, continues to be the engineer's best source for answers to realistic aircraft design questions. The book has been expanded to provide design guidance for additional classes of aircraft, including seaplanes, biplanes, UAS, high-speed business jets, and electric airplanes. In addition to conventional powerplants, design guidance for battery systems, electric motors, and complete electric powertrains is offered. The second edition contains new chapters: - Thrust Modeling for Gas Turbines - Longitudinal Stability and Control - Lateral and Directional Stability and Control These new chapters offer multiple practical methods to simplify the estimation of stability derivatives and introduce hinge moments and basic control system design. Furthermore, all chapters have been reorganized and feature updated material with additional analysis methods. This edition also provides an introduction to design optimization using a wing optimization as an example for the beginner. Written by an engineer with more than 25 years of design experience, professional engineers, aircraft designers, aerodynamicists, structural analysts, performance analysts, researchers, and aerospace engineering students will value the book as the classic go-to for aircraft design. - The printed book is now in color, with 1011 figures and illustrations! - Presents the most common methods for conceptual aircraft design - Clear presentation splits text into shaded regions, separating engineering topics from mathematical derivations and examples - Design topics range from the "new" 14 CFR Part 23 to analysis of ducted fans. All chapters feature updated material with additional analysis methods. Many chapters have been reorganized for further help. Introduction to design optimization is provided using a wing optimization as an example for the beginner - Three new chapters are offered, two of which focus on stability and control. These offer multiple practical methods to simplify the estimation of stability derivatives. The chapters introduce hinge moments and basic control system design - Real-world examples using aircraft such as the Cirrus SR-22 and Learjet 45
Download or read book Flight Performance of Fixed and Rotary Wing Aircraft written by Antonio Filippone and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2006-05-10 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calculation and optimisation of flight performance is required to design or select new aircraft, efficiently operate existing aircraft, and upgrade aircraft. It provides critical data for aircraft certification, accident investigation, fleet management, flight regulations and safety. This book presents an unrivalled range of advanced flight performance models for both transport and military aircraft, including the unconventional ends of the envelopes. Topics covered include the numerical solution of supersonic acceleration, transient roll, optimal climb of propeller aircraft, propeller performance, long-range flight with en-route stop, fuel planning, zero-gravity flight in the atmosphere, VSTOL operations, ski jump from aircraft carrier, optimal flight paths at subsonic and supersonic speed, range-payload analysis of fixed- and rotary wing aircraft, performance of tandem helicopters, lower-bound noise estimation, sonic boom, and more. This book will be a valuable text for undergraduate and post-graduate level students of aerospace engineering. It will also be an essential reference and resource for practicing aircraft engineers, aircraft operations managers and organizations handling air traffic control, flight and flying regulations, standards, safety, environment, and the complex financial aspects of flying aircraft. - Unique coverage of fixed and rotary wing aircraft in a unified manner, including optimisation, emissions control and regulation. - Ideal for students, aeronautical engineering capstone projects, and for widespread professional reference in the aerospace industry. - Comprehensive coverage of computer-based solution of aerospace engineering problems; the critical analysis of performance data; and case studies from real world engineering experience. - Supported by end of chapter exercises
