Book excerpt: WHEN we say that Mr. Chavasse is a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons, London, a practitioner of very considerable practice evidently, and a writer whose opinions are not less remarkable for their commonsense views than the plainness of their statement, the "Mothers" who read the Monthly Review will be induced to consult the details of the "Management." Our author says, that "several works have been written on the management of children, but none, I conceive, have been sufficiently explicit, or have extended enough into minutiae, or have dwelt on that which is of as much or more importance than the cure of disease, namely, the prevention." There is certainly no grounds for complaining that the Adviser avoids minuteness or explicit details. Whether the conversational form into which he has thrown these details be the best, is a point that admits of doubt. We quote, at any rate, a question and answer, in the way of specimen. "Q. Where it is found absolutely necessary to give an infant artificial food whilst suckling, how often should it be fed? A. Not oftener than three times during the twenty-four hours, and then only in small quantities at a time, as the stomach requires rest, and at the same time can manage to digest a little food better than it can a great deal." --The Monthly Review, Vol. 151.

I deem it to be your imperative duty to study the subjects well. The proper management of children is a vital question, -a mother's question, -and the most important that can be brought under the consideration of a parent; and, strange to say, it is one that has been more neglected than any other. How many mothers undertake-the responsible management of children without previous instruction, or without forethought; they undertake it, as though it may be learned either by intuition or by instinct, or by affection. The consequence is, that frequently they are in a sea of trouble and uncertainty, tossing about without either rule or compass; until, too often, their hopes and treasures are shipwrecked and lost.
