Sherlock Holmes is a private detective who has keen powers of observation. He lives at 221b Baker Street in London. He notices things that others simply don't and then he draws accurate conclusions about what he sees. In Doyle's first Holmes story, A Study in Scarlet, Holmes describes himself as someone who gets in the dumps at times and '(doesn't) open (his) mouth for days on end.' He experiences strong mood swings. He also plays the violin. But most of all, he is a master of deductive reasoning.

He never spoke of the softer passions, save with a gibe and a sneer. They were admirable things for the observer--excellent for drawing the veil from men's motives and actions. But for the trained reasoner to admit such intrusions into his own delicate and finely adjusted temperament was to introduce a distracting factor which might throw a doubt upon all his mental results. Grit in a sensitive instrument, or a crack in one of his own high-power lenses, would not be more disturbing than a strong emotion in a nature such as his. And yet there was but one woman to him, and that woman was the late Irene Adler, of dubious and questionable memory.

Book excerpt: It's been many years since I last read a Sherlock Holmes story, so I thought I would treat myself and read all of them. I thought my memories of how enjoyable they were would fade under a reread, especially since I became a writer myself. But the joy is still there, and now I can respect the polished writing of Sir Arthur Conan Dolyle even more. The style may not be modern, but no matter how late at night you're turning the pages, you never want to stop until you finish the story. And thanks to my Kindle, I was able to look up all those unusual words that he uses so carefully. When I was younger I could usually infer the meaning, and I might have turned to the dictionary once in awhile, but with the Kindle I could immediately look up the word, and place it in the proper context. Lo and behold, the word usually turned out to be the perfect choice to express the author's intent.So I would give as much credit to Doyle for his writing as I would for his creation of the most (im)perfect character of crime writing. To anyone who hasn't read the real deal, take a trip back in time to 1880. You see and feel how people in London thought and lived, and you'll have a wonderful adventure in the process. Bravo Sir Arthur!

It suggests that, in contrast, Holmes is portrayed as offering a fresh and fair approach in an unjust world of "official incompetence and aristocratic privilege". The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes contains many of Doyle's favourite Sherlock Holmes stories. In 1927, he submitted a list of what he believed were his twelve best Sherlock Holmes stories to The Strand Magazine. Among those he listed were "The Adventure of the Speckled Band" (as his favourite), "The Red-Headed League" (second), "A Scandal in Bohemia" (fifth) and "The Five Orange Pips" (seventh). The book was banned in the Soviet Union in 1929 because of its alleged "occultism", but the book gained popularity in a black market of similarly banned books, and the restriction was lifted in 1940.
