Book Adventures in Gold Country

Download or read book Adventures in Gold Country written by Milton House and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001-05-29 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up in the rugged gold mining country of Northern Ontario in the 1950's, Billy Tyler learns the harsh realities of life, and the strong values necessary to survive and succeed in an environment of wilderness beauty, lawlessness and greed. Billy's courageous attempt to rescue the passengers of a downed aircraft on a frozen northern lake, teaches him that true courage knows no boundaries. The fight for survival against a devastating flood, characterizes for Billy, the strength and perseverance of his frontier neighbors; many of them gold miners accustomed to danger. An eerie encounter with a young drowning victim brings an awareness of the reality of life and death. A summer job with the Circus leads to an association with some unsavory characters. A brutal attack on Caitlin, a circus friend, and the ensuing police investigation, creates awareness in Billy that stereotyping of any particular group of people can be dangerous. Billy's discover of a corpse buried beside a lake, leads to contact with the Algonquin Indian Nation and the Spirit World which permeates its culture. Billy's friendship with the charming, roguish leader of a Syndicate established to buy and sell gold stolen from the mines, results in much soul searching and conflicting values. The tenderness of a first love between Billy and Holly, the pretty, vivacious teenager, is played out against a background of excitement and adventure.

Book excerpt: Have you ever imagined giving up your day job and heading for the hills in search of gold? Journalist Steve Boggan decided to do just that when the price of the precious metal scaled dizzying heights in the wake of the global financial crisis. Clueless, and with neither equipment nor experience, Boggan flew to California and followed in the footsteps of the '49ers', miners who fuelled the original Gold Rush of 1849. Along the way, terrified of bears, bubonic plague and rattlesnakes, he met a cast of colourful characters, including a former Navy Seal who risked his life every day and a man who once went on the run for five years in the mistaken belief that he was wanted by the law. In charming and witty prose, gold-fevered Boggan recaptures the excitement, the hopes and disappointments of the hunt, going beyond the story of modern prospectors to give a moving insight into the birth of modern America.

  • Author : Kathryn Morse

Download or read book The Nature of Gold written by Kathryn Morse and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2009-11-23 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1896, a small group of prospectors discovered a stunningly rich pocket of gold at the confluence of the Klondike and Yukon rivers, and in the following two years thousands of individuals traveled to the area, hoping to find wealth in a rugged and challenging setting. Ever since that time, the Klondike Gold Rush - especially as portrayed in photographs of long lines of gold seekers marching up Chilkoot Pass - has had a hold on the popular imagination. In this first environmental history of the gold rush, Kathryn Morse describes how the miners got to the Klondike, the mining technologies they employed, and the complex networks by which they obtained food, clothing, and tools. She looks at the political and economic debates surrounding the valuation of gold and the emerging industrial economy that exploited its extraction in Alaska, and explores the ways in which a web of connections among America’s transportation, supply, and marketing industries linked miners to other industrial and agricultural laborers across the country. The profound economic and cultural transformations that supported the Alaska-Yukon gold rush ultimately reverberate to modern times. The story Morse tells is often narrated through the diaries and letters of the miners themselves. The daunting challenges of traveling, working, and surviving in the raw wilderness are illustrated not only by the miners’ compelling accounts but by newspaper reports and advertisements. Seattle played a key role as “gateway to the Klondike.” A public relations campaign lured potential miners to the West and local businesses seized the opportunity to make large profits while thousands of gold seekers streamed through Seattle. The drama of the miners’ journeys north, their trials along the gold creeks, and their encounters with an extreme climate will appeal not only to scholars of the western environment and of late-19th-century industrialism, but to readers interested in reliving the vivid adventure of the West’s last great gold rush.

Book Western Gold Adventures 1849 1854 Abridged Annotated

Download or read book Western Gold Adventures 1849 1854 Abridged Annotated written by Kimball Webster and published by BIG BYTE BOOKS. This book was released on with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In April, 1849, a little over six months before he was twenty-one, Kimball Webster caught the gold fever. Characteristic of his methodical ways, he kept a journal of his journey across the country and of his experiences as a miner in California and land surveyor in Oregon. His experiences in the Land of Gold is told in his own vivid language in these pages, and forms one of the most interesting narratives of the days of the gold-seekers of the Pacific Slope. Under trying circumstances that we can't fully appreciate today, the hardy men and women of the Gold Rush, the '49ers, faced danger from disease, accident, Native Americans, other miners, and most likely, poverty. Yet nearly 300,000 came to California to seek their fortune and tempt fate. Kimball Webster didn't strike it rich but went on to make a good life for himself. And he made us richer by leaving his account of those tumultuous years of the 1849 Gold Rush. Be sure to LOOK INSIDE or download a sample.
