Book Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry and its Applications

Download or read book Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry and its Applications written by E.W. Schlag and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The resurgence of time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOF-MS) has had its origin in the simplicity of construction and application of such instruments together with the high transmission and the great increase in resolution that has been achieved. The instrument lends itself naturally to a coupling with pulsed laser sources, though this is not a prerequisite. It also affords a time resolution far beyond that traditionally achieved with mass spectrometric rapid scan techniques - a recent example being the real-time analysis of a multi-component mixture from an automobile exhaust. Furthermore, the mass range appears to be extremely large: mass up to 500 kDa and beyond what is being readily measured in the laboratory today. The present set of contributions attempts to give a survey of current applications from many of the active groups in the field. A variety of new applications are considered which are no doubt just the beginning of large new areas of application. By presenting this work in book form it is hoped that it will be of help to the many groups intending to initiate work in this rapidly expanding new area of mass spectrometry.

Book Plasma Source Mass Spectrometry

Download or read book Plasma Source Mass Spectrometry written by J Grenville Holland and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atomic spectrometry has exciting new bio-analytical horizons open to it, principally through the developments in the capabilities of ICP-MS coupled with the inventiveness of experimentalists. This is reflected in the use of the technique for ion-, capillary electrophoresis-, liquid- and gas-chromatographic separation in biological applications, as reported in this book. Traditional (environmental, semiconductor, geological and clinical) applications are also well represented. In addition, recent and future developments in sample introduction devices, multicollector sector, reaction cells and collision cells instruments, as well as co-existence, divergence and potential convergence of atomic and biomolecular mass spectrometries are discussed. Reflecting the current state of practical ICP-MS and drawing together the latest developments in the field, Plasma Source Mass Spectrometry: Current Trends and Future Developments is ideal for university researchers and laboratory practitioners. It will be of interest to all those involved in the development and application of this technique.

Book excerpt: Plasma Source Mass Spectrometry is an analytical technique with a considerable range of applications. Still in its infancy, there are always new ideas emerging and original work on which to report. This book is a unique presentation of the most recent developments in this exciting field, with a wide array of topics covered and original world-wide contributions. Discussions include various methods of mass analysis, data analysis strategies, plasma dynamics, and the results of an extensive range of analyses in areas such as drinking water contamination, landfill groundwater contamination and nuclear materials processing. Development of instrumentation, the application of chromatography and methods of dealing with spectral and non-spectral interferences are also included. Plasma Source Mass Spectrometry offers a current perspective on elemental analysis that is not to be found elsewhere. With an invaluable index of references, it will be of interest to graduates and researchers alike in analysis and spectroscopy as well as the environmental disciplines.

Book Mass Spectrometry in the Biological Sciences A Tutorial

Download or read book Mass Spectrometry in the Biological Sciences A Tutorial written by M.L Gross and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The developments in mass spectrometry over the past fifteen years have been impressive in their implications in bioanalytical chemistry. The achievements begin with the inventions of Cf-252 Plasma Desorption Mass Spectrometry by Macfarlane and Fourier Transform Mass Spectrometry by Comisarow and Marshall in the mid 1970s. The former showed the feasibility of producing large gas-phase ions from large biomolecules whereas the latter enhanced the capabilities for ion trapping especially in analytical mass spectrometry. A major achievement was the development by Barber of Fast Atom Bombardment (FAB) mass spectrometry, an advance that heralded a new era in biological mass spectrometry. Contemporary and routine instruments such as magnetic sectors and quadrupoles were rapidly adapted to F AB, and nearly the entire universe of small molecules became amenable to study by mass spectrometry. The introduction of FAB also paved the way for improvement of instrument capability. For example, the upper mass limit of magnet sector mass spectrometers was increased by nearly an order of magnitude by the instrument manufacturers. Furthermore, the technique of tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) was given new meaning because important structural information for biomolecules could now be produced for ions introduced by FAB into the tandem instrument. The evolution of MS/MS continues today with the development of ion traps, time-of-flight, and sector instruments equipped with array detection.
