Book High Speed Optical Modulation Advanced Modulation Formats and Mode Division Multiplexing in Silicon Photonics

Download or read book High Speed Optical Modulation Advanced Modulation Formats and Mode Division Multiplexing in Silicon Photonics written by Diego Pérez Galacho and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bandwidth demand in optical communication systems is continually growing. Data rate values in the order of several hundreds of TBps are expected in the near future. In order to cope with those expectations silicon based technologies are believed to be the best suited. Its naturally compatibility with CMOS easily enables the electronics and photonics co-integration. In the short-term the way increase data rates in next generation optical communication systems goes through using advanced modulation format and increase symbol rates. In the long-term view, new multiplexing techniques will be required. In this sense, mode division multiplexing is nowadays an attractive approach under consideration. In this Thesis work, the way to implement these new optical communication schemes is studied from the transmitter point of view. It includes, on a first part the modeling, design and characterization of silicon modulators. And in a second part, it includes the proposition, design and characterization of novel mode handling devices for mode division multiplexing.A new way of modeling silicon modulators has been developed. This new model permits to reduce the computation time of modulator analysis up to two orders of magnitude, while maintaining a good level of accuracy. Using the model, modulators based on lateral PN junctions and interdigitated PN junctions were designed to work in the O-Band of optical communications. Characterization work has been performed on these modulators with good results. Wide-open OOK (On Off Keying) eye diagrams with 10 dB extinction ratio were obtained at 10GBps. Furthermore, BPSK (Binary Phase Shift Keying) modulation was also demonstrated at 10GBps.New kind of mode converters and multiplexers, intended to work as mode division multiplexing subsystems have been proposed, designed, fabricated and characterized. Measured results show broad bandwidth operation with high extinction ratio.

Book Advance Modulation and Multiplexing in Optical Communication Systems

Download or read book Advance Modulation and Multiplexing in Optical Communication Systems written by Amin Malekmohammadi and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010-12 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced optical modulation and multiplexing techniques have become a key ingredient to the design of modern WDM optically routed networks. This book, reviews the generation and detection of multigigabit/second intensity- and phase modulated formats and highlights their resilience to key impairments found in optical networking, such as optical amplifier noise, chromatic dispersion, WDM crosstalk and fiber nonlinearity. A novel multiplexing technique, namely Absolute Polar Duty Cycle Division Multiplexing (AP-DCDM) which is based on the polar signaling and different return to zero (RZ) duty cycles is reported for high speed optical fiber communication systems. Unlike all the other techniques, in AP-DCDM different users share the communication medium to transmit in the same time period and at the same carrier wavelength, but with different duty cycles. The unique duty cycle for each channel helps to regenerate data at the receiver

Book Advanced Modulation Formats and Nonlinear Mitigation for Spectral Efficient Optical Transmission Systems

Download or read book Advanced Modulation Formats and Nonlinear Mitigation for Spectral Efficient Optical Transmission Systems written by Ivan Fernandez de Jauregui Ruiz and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global data traffic is expected to reach up to 4.3 ZB per year by 2020. With the majority of the global communications being transported on submarine point-to-point fiber-optic systems, different cutting-edge technologies have been under research to cope with this unprecedented traffic growth. Continuous advances in high-speed integrated circuits have allowed the use of advanced modulation formats and digital signal processing (DSP) techniques to maximize the transmission spectral efficiency. With mitigation of fiber linear effects efficiently carried out by DSP with relative low-complexity, the capacity of modern fiber optic systems rests limited by fiber nonlinearities. To this extent, in the first part of this work, the performance and achievable benefits of low-complexity DSP techniques aiming to mitigate fiber Kerr nonlinear effects are investigated. Besides nonlinear compensation techniques, the use of multi-level modulation formats beyond 16QAM and high symbol rate channels have gained momentum to increase the system spectral efficiency. One of the major breakthroughs in the recent years, has been the introduction of QAM-based probabilistic constellation shaping (PCS-QAM), which has proven to outperform regular QAM formats. In this sense, in the second part of this work, the practical achievable rate increase brought by PCS-QAM for transoceanic distances is investigated. A theoretical and experimental comparison with other high-capacity formats is performed, and the design of a PCS-QAM for trans-Pacific distances is addressed. Finally, in the last section, several transmission records using the two above techniques are reported.

Book Advanced Modulation Formats for High bit rate Optical Networks

Download or read book Advanced Modulation Formats for High bit rate Optical Networks written by Muhammad Haris and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the proposed research is to investigate the performance of advanced modulation formats, specifically modified duobinary return-to zero (MD-RZ) modulation scheme and its long-haul repeaterless transmission over standard single mode fiber (SMF). This research also focuses on phase modulation formats like differential phase shift keying (DPSK) and differential quadrature phase shift keying (DQPSK), specifically free spectral range (FSR) optimization and wavelength offset tolerance in direct detection of these phase modulated systems. In this research we present a novel and cost effective technique to generate a modified duobinary return-to-zero (MD-RZ) signal. Next, we attained experimental results for single channel and WDM repeaterless transmission using these MD-RZ signals. A numerical comparison is also drawn with other conventional MD-RZ transmitters. MD-RZ transmission characteristics are also studied numerically for 40 Gb/s WDM signals and compared with other two leading constant intensity phase modulated formats like DPSK and DQPSK. We also have presented experimental results for FSR optimization of DQPSK de-modulator for ultra-high data-rate systems in the presence of strong optical filtering. Choice of an optimal FSR beyond 1-bit delay in Mach-Zehnder delay interferometer (MZ-DI) helps relieving some of the degradations due to strong optical filtering. Wavelength offset tolerance is also experimentally measured and numerically investigated for DPSK and DQPSK modulation formats with different transmitter schemes employing intensity or phase modulators to achieve required phase shifts.

Book Advanced Optical Modulation Formats for Fiber to the Premise

Download or read book Advanced Optical Modulation Formats for Fiber to the Premise written by Jamie D. Gaudette and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In conventional fiber to the premises (FTTp) networks, bi-directional crosstalk is an issue, as on-off keying (OOK) is used for both the upstream and downstream modulation format. Since the data in an OSBM signal resides in an offset sideband, by using OSBM as the downstream modulation format, issues pertaining to bi-directional crosstalk in a simple direct detection transceiver can be virtually eliminated by appropriate filtering in the electrical domain. This theory is applied using an inline transceiver, which is a very simple next generation FTTp transceiver. OSBM is shown to alleviate issues pertaining to bi-directional crosstalk in the FTTp system with the inline transceiver.
