Download or read book Advanced Methods to Target and Eliminate Unlawful Robocalls Us Federal Communications Commission Regulation Fcc 2018 Edition written by The Law The Law Library and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-10-06 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced Methods To Target and Eliminate Unlawful Robocalls (US Federal Communications Commission Regulation) (FCC) (2018 Edition) The Law Library presents the complete text of the Advanced Methods To Target and Eliminate Unlawful Robocalls (US Federal Communications Commission Regulation) (FCC) (2018 Edition). Updated as of May 29, 2018 In this document, Commission issues new rules that protect consumers from unwanted robocalls by permitting voice service providers to proactively block telephone calls when the subscriber of a phone number requests that calls purporting to originate from that number be blocked, and when calls purport to originate from three categories of unassigned phone numbers: Invalid numbers, valid numbers that are not allocated to a voice service provider, and valid numbers that are allocated but not assigned to a subscriber. While such calls may appear to be legitimate to those who receive them, they can result in fraud or identity theft. To combat these scams, the new rules expressly authorize voice service providers to block these robocalls without running afoul of the FCC's call completion rules. To minimize blocking of lawful calls, the Commission encourages voice service providers that elect to block calls to establish a simple way to identify and fix blocking errors. The rules also prohibit providers from blocking 911 emergency calls. This book was released on 2018-10-15 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Telephone Consumer Protection Act (US Federal Communications Commission Regulation) (FCC) (2018 Edition) The Law Library presents the complete text of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (US Federal Communications Commission Regulation) (FCC) (2018 Edition). Updated as of May 29, 2018 In this document, the Commission modifies its rules under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) to implement a provision of the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015 that excepts from the TCPA's prior-express-consent requirement autodialed and prerecorded calls "made solely to collect a debt owed to or guaranteed by the United States." While certain debt servicing calls are permitted under the exception, the Commission caps the number of permitted calls to wireless numbers at no more than three within a thirty-day period; ensures that consumers have the right to stop such calls at any time; and adopts other consumer protections. These measures implement Congress's mandate to ensure the TCPA does not thwart important calls that can help consumers avoid debt troubles while preserving consumers' ultimate right to determine what calls they wish to receive. Book The Case for the Digital Platform Act

Download or read book The Case for the Digital Platform Act written by Harold Feld and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-10-04 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Case for the Digital Platform Act" is a new book from Harold Feld, Senior Vice President of Public Knowledge and longtime communications industry advocate, in collaboration with Public Knowledge and the Roosevelt Institute. This book aims to guide policymakers on what government can do to preserve competition and empower individual users in the huge swath of our economy now referred to as "Big Tech." Many Americans now wonder how they can reassert control over their lives after ceding so many decisions about our economy and our public discourse to private actors like Facebook, Google, and Amazon. But as Feld points out, we have faced similar challenges from new technologies before. Looking at more than a century of disruptive communications technologies from the telegraph to television to Twitter, Feld picks out patterns of what approaches have worked (and what hasn't) to promote competition, empower consumers and protect democracy. "The Case for the Digital Platform Act" provides a deep dive for policymakers on everything from specific recommendations on how to promote competition to a "First Amendment checklist" for content moderation, while remaining accessible to the general reader looking to participate in the debate over our digital future. Feld explains the need for a "Digital Platform Act" and for an agency specifically charged to regulate digital platforms on an ongoing basis. He proposes a new method of assessing a platform's dominance for purposes of new regulation. He also addresses questions around content moderation rights and responsibilities for companies that have found themselves policing the new public square, all while preserving the best things about digital platforms for their users. Praise for "The Case for the Digital Platform Act": "[...] a tour de force of the issues raised by the digital economy and internet capitalism. Whether you agree or disagree with Harold, these thoughts will stretch your intellect and stimulate your thinking." -Tom Wheeler, Former Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, Visiting Fellow at The Brooking Institution "You'd be shortchanging yourself by not reading the book of such a principled advocate." -Hal Singer, Managing Director at Econ One Research, Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business, Senior Fellow at George Washington's Institute of Public Policy "I'd bet you can't listen to Harold Feld talk about the Digital Platform Act and not think we need it as law right now. I'm glad Harold Feld and Public Knowledge are making the case for government to do the job Silicon Valley won't." -Chris Savage, Eclectablog

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a time not far from our own, Lawrence sets out simply to build an artifical intelligence that can pass as human, and finds himself instead with one that can pass as a god. Taking the Three Laws of Robotics literally, Prime Intellect makes every human immortal and provides instantly for every stated human desire. Caroline finds no meaning in this life of purposeless ease, and forgets her emptiness only in moments of violent and profane exhibitionism. At turns shocking and humorous, "Prime Intellect" looks unflinchingly at extremes of human behavior that might emerge when all limits are removed. An international Internet phenomenon, "Prime Intellect" has been downloaded more than 10,000 times since its free release in January 2003. It has been read and discussed in Australia, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Slovenia, South Africa, and other countries. Book excerpt: Implementation of the Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation (CALM) Act (US Federal Communications Commission Regulation) (FCC) (2018 Edition) The Law Library presents the complete text of the Implementation of the Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation (CALM) Act (US Federal Communications Commission Regulation) (FCC) (2018 Edition). Updated as of May 29, 2018 In this document, the Commission adopts rules to implement the Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation ("CALM") Act. Among other things, the CALM Act directs the Commission to incorporate into its rules by reference and make mandatory a technical standard, developed by an industry standards development body, that is designed to prevent digital television commercial advertisements from being transmitted at louder volumes than the program material they accompany. As mandated by the statute, the rules apply to digital TV broadcasters, digital cable operators, and other digital multichannel video programming distributors ("MVPDs"). Also per the statute, the rules will take effect one year after adoption, and will therefore be effective as of December 13, 2012. The rules adopted are designed to protect viewers from excessively loud commercials and, at the same time, permit broadcasters and MVPDs to implement their obligations in a minimally burdensome manner. The Commission will require broadcast stations and MVPDs to ensure that all commercials are transmitted to consumers at the appropriate loudness level in accordance with the industry standard. Book Federal and State Affairs

Download or read book Federal and State Affairs written by Joanna Dolan and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unsolicited calls are among the most frequent consumer complaints received by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The use of automatic dialing announcing devices (referred to as robocalls) to make these calls is on the rise, with estimates indicating 4.1 billion such calls were received across the United States in July 2018 alone. Utilities, pharmacies and health care providers, schools, and other entities use robocalls to provide billing, scheduling, and other information to the public. However, an increasing number of robocalls made to consumers are unsolicited, illegitimate, and unwanted. As the frequency of these calls increases, states have been taking action to minimize robocalls. This article discusses the current state of the law concerning robocalls in Kansas and other states, as well as recent legislation and court cases at both the state and federal levels.
