This book was released on 2004 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced, burn-rate, propellant modeling is critical for developing new rocket-missile and gun propellants for Future Combat Systems and for providing a fundamental screening tool that can result in substantial cost savings compared to missile and gun firings. In this summary, we report the detailed chemical kinetics and burn rate prediction of hexahydro-1,3,5-hexanitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) and selected high-energetic binders and nitrate esters.

Download or read book Advanced Diagnostics for Gun Propellant Combustion JANNAF Combustion Subcommittee Workshop Held in Picatinny Arsenal New Jersey on 13 14 June 1989 written by Camille Hudson and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A JANNAF workshop on Advanced Diagnostics for Propellant Combustion was held at U.S. Army Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center, Picatinny Arsenal, Dover, New Jersey, June 13-14, 1989. The purpose of this workshop was to investigate the utility of advanced diagnostic techniques for use in gun ballistic simulators and laboratory fixtures as an aid to understand the ignition and combustion processes occurring in the gun interior ballistics environment. This paper summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of various diagnostic techniques for propellant combustion studies. Topics and specific work items for future studies in this area have also been identified and recommended. Keywords: Burning rate, Combustion, Gun Chambers, Ignition, Instrumentation.

Book Combustion Diagnostics of Propellant with New Grain Geometries

Download or read book Combustion Diagnostics of Propellant with New Grain Geometries written by R. E. Tompkins and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High progressivity/density (HPD) propellants are under consideration at the Ballistic Research Laboratory (BRL) for a variety of enhanced ballistic applications. The HPD concept involves the tailoring of the mass generation rate to match the increasing chamber volume as the projectile moves down the gun tube. This can be accomplished physically by designing a grain which will increase in surface area at a designated point in the ballistic cycle. It can also be done chemically by formulating grains with compositions that vary throughout the grain. As these layers burn through, the burn rate can be tailored to change at specific points in the ballistic cycle.

Book Propellant Combustion Diagnostics

Download or read book Propellant Combustion Diagnostics written by Nathan Klein and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A review of the present status of knowledge regarding gun propellant combustion under realistic conditions indicates that information is needed regarding spatial and temporal distribution of reaction products and intermediate species. Information as to the identity of a number of such species and the non-equilibrium 'temperature' of these materials is also urgently needed. A number of optical techniques have recently been developed that hold promise for producing some of the needed information. The complexity of the techniques and their level of development varies widely and their potential must be evaluated on a case-by-case basis as to which would be most amenable for use. A large portion of the equipment required for their exploitation is the same so that an effort in the general area of combustion diagnostics by advanced optical methods would make a number of the methods available for evaluation. Ancillary data concerning propellant functioning other than combustion would also become available if such a combustion diagnostics program were actively pursued. (Author).

Book Burn Rate Mechanisms Volume 2 A Model for Ammonium Nitrate Propellant Combustion

Download or read book Burn Rate Mechanisms Volume 2 A Model for Ammonium Nitrate Propellant Combustion written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the space shuttle is launched, each Solid Rocket Motor (SRM) booster generates approximately 100 tons of HCI in the exhaust. Thus, with the two boosters, over 200 tons of HCI is generated from each space shuttle launch. The HCI presents several potential problems. The HOI provides nucleation sites for moisture in the air - with the result being the condensed, hydrated form of hydrochloric acid (HCI. H2O). The resultant acid cloud results in a very visible cloud which through further condensation can result in acid rain. The acid rain is obviously detrimental to both plant and animal life dependent on the concentration levels it achieves as it reaches the ground. In addition, at higher elevations, the HOI can react with the protective layer of ozone causing a degradation of some of the ozone. The HO comes from the AR (ammonium perchlorate) which is the oxidizer in the solid propellant for the 5PM boosters. The SRM propellant contains approximately 70% AP which generates slightly more than 21 weight percent HG in the exhaust gases. For these reasons it is desirable to find a replacement for the AP to eliminate the HCI in the rocket exhaust.
