Book excerpt: Gain an understanding of the threat to freedom that is posed by state regulation of adolescent sexual behavior Sexual autonomy encompasses both the right to engage in wanted sexual activity and the right to be free and protected from unwanted sexual aggression. Only when both aspects of adolescents’ rights are recognized can human sexual dignity be fully respected. In Adolescence, Sexuality, and the Criminal Law, experts from several disciplines use case studies, legal analysis, empirical examinations, and tables and figures to provide you with an insightful contribution to the debate surrounding child sexual abuse. Much has been written about the undisputedly essential fight against child sexual exploitation. In Adolescence, Sexuality, and the Criminal Law, experts investigate for the first time what distinguishes the sexual contacts of adolescents from those of children and why they should be treated separately. This updated version of the papers delivered to the International Association for the Treatment of Sex Offenders in 2002 is an essential guide for lawmakers, sexologists, psychologists, and lawyers interested in an interdisciplinary approach to adolescent sexuality and the criminal law. This resource carefully examines child sexual abuse laws that fail to distinguish between children and adolescents. The text includes discussions of the history of the age of consent, adolescent sexuality, relations between adolescents and adults, and adolescent prostitution and pornography that will leave you better informed about the sexual rights of adolescents and the criminal politics of youth protection. Adolescence, Sexuality, and the Criminal Law examines adolescent sexuality and the various policies that threaten adolescents’ autonomy, including: the question of youthful sexuality and how society has attempted to deal with it recent attempts to deny youthful sexuality through abstinence or changes in the law intergenerational sexual interaction child pornography and much more! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Because sexuality is socially and legally the most regulated aspect of adolescent life, Levesque's analysis examines the reality of adolescent life through the lens of sexuality. In doing so, he divides the book into four parts. The book's first three parts examine the social and legal history of adolescence in the United States (Part I), the legal precedents in the regulation of adolescent sexuality (Part II), and the most common areas of legal control: school, the media, sexual victimization, sexual offending, and parenthood (Part III). Part IV details the author's proposal for social and legal reforms that will ensure that adolescents' legal rights complement their social reality."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we consider the concept of sexual abuse and harassment, our minds tend to jump either towards adults caught in unhealthy relationships or criminals who take advantage of children. But the millions of maturing teenagers who also deal with sexual harassment can fall between the cracks. When it comes to sexual relationships, adolescents pose a particular problem. Few teenagers possess all of the emotional and intellectual tools needed to navigate these threats, including the all too real advances made by supervisors, teachers, and mentors. In Sexual Exploitation of Teenagers, Jennifer Drobac explores the shockingly common problem of maturing adolescents who are harassed and exploited by adults in their lives. Reviewing the neuroscience and psychosocial evidence of adolescent development, she explains why teens are so vulnerable to adult harassers. Even today, in an age of increasing public awareness, criminal and civil law regarding the sexual abuse of minors remains tragically inept and irregular from state to state. Drobac uses six recent cases of teens suffering sexual harassment to illuminate the flaws and contradictions of this system, skillfully showing how our current laws fail to protect youths, and offering an array of imaginative legal reforms that could achieve increased justice for adolescent victims of sexual coercion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An American Travesty is the first scholarly book in half a century to analyze the justice system’s response to sexual misconduct by children and adolescents in the United States. Writing with a refreshing dose of common sense, Franklin E. Zimring discusses our society's failure to consider the developmental status of adolescent sex offenders. Too often, he argues, the American legal system ignores age and developmental status when adjudicating young sexual offenders, in many cases responding as they would to an adult. “An opinionated, articulate, and forceful critique of current politics and practices. . . . I would recommend this book for anyone interested in rethinking the fundamental questions of how our courts and systems should respond to these cases.”—Law and Politics Book Review “One of the most important new books in the field of juvenile justice. . . . Zimring offers a thoughtful, research-based analysis of what went wrong with legal policy development.”—Barry Krisberg, President, National Council on Crime and Delinquency

Book Children Sexuality and the Law

Download or read book Children Sexuality and the Law written by Sacha M. Coupet and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American political and legal culture is uncomfortable with children's sexuality. While aware that sexual expression is a necessary part of human development, law rarely contemplates the complex ways in which it interacts with children and sexuality. Just as the law circumscribes children to a narrow range of roles - either as entirely sexless beings or victims or objects of harmful adult sexual conduct - so too does society tend to discount the notion of children as agents in the domain of sex and sexuality. This book reflects on some of the unique challenges that accompany children in the broader context of sex, exploring from diverse perspectives the ways in which children emerge in sexually related dimensions of law and contemporary life. It explores a broad range of issues, from the psychology of children as sexual beings to the legal treatment of adolescent consent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nexus between the digital revolution and adolescent sexual behavior has posed significant challenges to mental health practitioners, attorneys, and educators. These digital technologies may facilitate dangerous behaviors and serious consequences for some youth. Adolescent Sexual Development in the Digital Age considers adolescent sexual behavior in both clinical and legal contexts and provides a basis for clinicians, legal professionals, educators, policy makers, parents and the general public to understand the impact that technology has on human growth and development. The book's contributing authors are leading authorities in adolescent development, law, and ethics, fostering an interdisciplinary dialogue within the text. New technology poses many opportunities for both normal and risky sexual behavior in youth; including "sexting," social networking, cyber-sexual harassment, commercial exploitation of children, and child pornography. Beyond just cataloging the various technologies impacting sexual behavior, this volume offers guidance and strategies for addressing the issues created by the digital age.

Book Adolescents Media and the Law

Download or read book Adolescents Media and the Law written by Roger J. R. Levesque and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007-06-18 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is much controversy about the dangers of a free media when it comes to children and adolescents. Many believe that this constitutional right should be amended, altered, or revoked entirely to prevent the young from being negatively influenced. Graphic violence, sexual content, and the depiction of cigarette smoking have all come under fire as being unacceptable in media that is geared toward adolescents, from television and movies to magazines and advertising. Yet not much has been written about the developmental science behind these ideas, and what effects a free media really has on adolescents. This book presents a synthesis of all current knowledge about the developmental effects of a free media on adolescents. Levesque first presents a full analysis of research studies into the media's effects on adolescents in four key areas: sexuality, violence, smoking, and body image. All findings are assessed within the context of normal adolescent development. Levesque then discusses how this knowledge can be used to inform current standards for the regulation of free speech with regard to adolescents. Both legal restrictions and less formal regulatory bodies (schools, parent groups, etc.) are reviewed to present a full picture of the ways in which a free media is constrained to protect adolescent's development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescents live in a changing world. Those changes come in the readily recognisable form of pressing familial, educational, economic, informational, cultural and global challenges. We have yet to see how these transformations will impact adolescents' personal relationships and their place in society. We do know, however, that current approaches to the socialisation of adolescents raise important concerns as parents and social institutions respond to challenges. This book explores these changes and challenges by examining the extent to which we may foster adolescent development in ways that respect and foster adolescents' basic rights to relationships they deem appropriate, fulfilling, and worthy of protection. It also explores those changes and rights from a view that acknowledges the need to respect the rights of others, that recognises that adolescents' rights are not for them alone. Contents: Preface; The Legal Foundations of Adolescents' Education; The Place and Nature of Sexuality Education in Society; Revisiting the Traditional Rationale for Sexuality Education: Pregnancy, Developmental Timing, and its Legal Responses; Combating Relationship Violence: Expanding Adolescents'

Book excerpt: The history of the sex guide for adolescents documents the quite unconscious movement of Western culture’s ideas about sex and youth, revealing the heritage of our own sexual beliefs and codes of behaviour. The first section of this book, first published in 1986, traces the development of the sex guide, examining 400 books from 1892 to the 1980s. The second section comprises a detailed analysis of the patterns, content and usefulness of all the contemporary manifestations of the genre. The history of the teen sex manual is a fascinating revelation of American attitudes towards adolescent sexuality.

Reviews: -- As a former prosecutor and criminal court judge and a current law school professor, I am aware of the importance of our youth taking the law seriously. In that regard, one of the most powerful tools we can provide as parents, teachers, and community leaders is a meaningful education of legal consequences. Teen Law helps us in that regard. It is comprehensive, accurate and entertaining. I recommend the book to every adult who cares about our young people.-- Professor Lupe Salinas -Thurgood Marshall School of Law, Texas Southern University; Houston, Texas -- I cannot overstate the importance of our youth understanding and respecting the law; it is not enough merely to say that the law is a serious matter; rather, we must find a more effective message; Teen Law strikes me as that type of message.--Donna Goode -Former Bureau Chief, Special Prosecutions Bureau; Harris County, Texas, District Attorney's Office The author, David Levin is a member of the State Bar of Texas and practices law in Houston.
