Book excerpt: Excerpt from Additional Observations on Sexual Selection in Spiders of the Family Attid With Some Remarks on Mr. Wallace's Theory of Sexual Ornamentation On seeing the female, which he does when eight or ten inches away, he approaches her slowly; when within three or four inches lie-begins to sway from side to side by bending all the legs on'on'e side and extending the opposite ones, and then reversing the process, at the same time advancing. The palpi are stretched out sideways, thus exposing the blue clypeus. As he moves, the female eyes him attentively and seems to be interested in his display. When quite near her he raises the first legs and holds them perpendicularly upward, and then, as he comes closer, lowers them so as to touch her. This seems to frighten her, and she runs Off. The whole performance is repeated six or eight times before she finally yields, either to his boldness and persistence, as Mr. Wallace would haveit, or to the combination of these qualities with grace and beauty. Book Sexual Selection and the Descent of Man

Download or read book Sexual Selection and the Descent of Man written by Bernard Campbell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just over one hundred and thirty years ago Charles Darwin, in The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex (1871), developed remarkably accurate conclusions about man's ancestry, based on a review of general comparative anatomy and psychology in which he regarded sexual selection as a necessary part of the evolutionary process. But the attention of biologists turned to the more general concept of natural selection, in which sexual selection plays a complex role that has been little understood. This volume significantly broadens the scope of modern evolutionary biology by looking at this important and long neglected concept of great importance. In this book, which is the first full discussion of sexual selection since 1871, leading biologists bring modern genetic theory and behavior observation to bear on the subject. The distinguished authors consider many aspects of sexual selection in many species, including man, within the context of contemporary evolutionary theory and research. The result is a remarkably original and well-rounded view of the whole concept that will be invaluable especially to students of evolution and human sexual behavior. The lucid authority of the contributors and the importance of the topic will interest all who share in man's perennial fascination with his own history. The book will be of central importance to a wide variety of professionals, including biologists, anthropologists, and geneticists. It will be an invaluable supplementary text for courses in vertebrate biology, theory of evolution, genetics, and physical anthropology. It is especially important with the emergence of alternative explanations of human development, under the rubric of creationism and doctrines of intelligent design.

Book Looking for a Few Good Males

Download or read book Looking for a Few Good Males written by Erika L. Milam and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2010-03-15 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2010 Outstanding Academic Title, Choice Magazine Why do female animals select certain mates, and how do scientists determine the answer? In considering these questions, Erika Lorraine Milam explores the fascinating patterns of experiment and interpretation that emerged as twentieth-century researchers studied sexual selection and female choice. Approaching the topic from both biological and animal-studies perspectives, Milam not only presents a broad history of sexual selection—from Darwin to sociobiology—but also analyzes the animal-human continuum from the perspectives of sex, evolution, and behavior. She asks how social and cultural assumptions influence human-animal research and wonders about the implications of gender on scientific outcomes. Although female choice appears to be a straightforward theoretical concept, the study of sexual selection has been anything but simple. Scientists in the early twentieth century investigated female choice in animals but did so with human social and sexual behavior as their ultimate objective. By the 1940s, evolutionary biologists and population geneticists shifted their focus, studying instead how evolution affected natural animal populations. Two decades later, organismal biologists once again redefined the investigation of sexual selection as sociobiology came to dominate the discipline. Outlining the ever-changing history of this field of study, Milam uncovers lost mid-century research programs and finds that the discipline did not languish in the decades between Darwin’s theory of sexual selection and sociobiology, as observers commonly believed. Rather, population geneticists, ethologists, and organismal biologists alike continued to investigate this important theory throughout the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: This volume explores the diversity of distributed eyes and other unusual visual systems in nature. It compares the unique themes of optics, neural processing, and behavioral control that emerge from these visual systems with more-canonical eyes. This volume attempts to answer a number of questions about distributed visual systems. What are distributed visual systems good for, how do they function, and why have they arisen independently in so many phyla? Why are eye designs and visual system arrangements much more diverse in invertebrates? Each chapter includes an overview of the visual systems that exist in their group of animals, relates vision to ecology, and takes a comparative approach.
