Book Acoustic Emission Monitoring of a Fracture critical Bridge

Download or read book Acoustic Emission Monitoring of a Fracture critical Bridge written by Arturo E. Schultz and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With bridge infrastructure in Minnesota aging, advancing techniques for ensuring bridge safety is a fundamental goal of the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT). As such, developing health monitoring systems for fracture-critical bridges is an essential objective in meeting the stated goal. This report documents the acquisition, testing and installation of a 16-sensor acoustic emission monitoring system in the Cedar Avenue Bridge, which is a fracture-critical tied arch bridge in Burnsville, Minnesota. The overall goal of the project was to demonstrate that acoustic emission technology could be used for global monitoring of fracture-critical steel bridges. Project activities included the acquisition of the monitoring equipment, its testing to verify compliance with manufacturer specifications, installation of the equipment on the selected bridge, field testing to calibrate the system, development of data processing protocols for the acoustic emission (AE) data, and the collection of field data for a period of 22 months. Fracture tests of notched cantilever steel beams were conducted in the laboratory to provide characterization data for fracture events.

Book Acoustic Emission Testing of In service Conventionally Reinforced Concrete Deck Girder Superstructures on Highway Bridges

Download or read book Acoustic Emission Testing of In service Conventionally Reinforced Concrete Deck Girder Superstructures on Highway Bridges written by Steven C. Lovejoy and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three reports were produced from research sponsored by the Oregon Department of Transportation on acoustic emission (AE). The first describes the evaluation of AE techniques applied to two reinforced concrete (RC) bridge girders, which were loaded to mimic in-service conditions. The main goal was to get a thorough understanding of how AE methods can be used with RC and in what way these methods can assist in maintaining the states aging RC deck girder bridges. Recommended settings for data acquisition and processing were evaluated. In addition to the complex full-scale beam components, studies were performed on smaller test specimens that improved understanding of stress wave propagation through reinforced concrete and the response of acoustic emission sensors in detecting these waves. Some qualitative and quantitative assessment methodologies were described, and examples and limitations of the methods were presented. Source locations in three dimensions were performed, and strategies on how to best deploy sensors were evaluated using Monte Carlo Simulations.

Book Protocols and Criteria for Acoustic Emission Monitoring of Fracture critical Steel Bridges

Download or read book Protocols and Criteria for Acoustic Emission Monitoring of Fracture critical Steel Bridges written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With bridge infrastructure in Minnesota aging, advancing techniques for ensuring bridge safety is a fundamental goal of the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT). Developing health monitoring systems for fracture-critical bridges is an essential objective in meeting the stated goal. This report documents the implementation of two, 16-sensor, acoustic emission monitoring systems in one of the tie girders of the Cedar Avenue Bridge, which is a fracture-critical tied arch bridge spanning the Minnesota River between Bloomington and Eagan, MN. The goal of the project is to develop a process for using acoustic emission technology to monitor one of the girders of the bridge while continuously collecting data from the monitoring systems. Given the cost of acoustic emission sensing equipment, an approach was adopted to space the sensors as widely as possible. Fracture tests were conducted on a specimen acoustically connected to the bridge to simulate fracture in a bridge member. Sets of criteria were developed to differentiate between acoustic emission data collected during fracture and ambient bridge (i.e. AE noise) data. The sets of criteria were applied to fracture test data and AE noise data to determine the validity of the criteria. For each criteria set, a period of Cedar Avenue Bridge monitoring data was analyzed. The results of the analysis of each period showed that the criteria could differentiate between the bridge AE noise data and the fracture test data. The AE noise data never met all of the criteria in the set, whereas all criteria were met during each of the applicable fracture tests.

Book Acoustic emission monitoring of steel bridge members

Download or read book Acoustic emission monitoring of steel bridge members written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interim report describes the current status of acoustic emission (AE) monitoring of steel bridge members. The report includes a brief introduction to the theory of acoustic emission and a comprehensive summary of previous efforts to apply AE monitoring to steel bridges, and discusses issues related to AE noise discrimination. Five bridges were field tested. Extensive data from the active cracking of a hanger on the Rte. 29 bridge over the Robinson River at Madison, Virginia, are discussed. The report includes conclusions and recommendations based on extensive field monitoring. Two appendices detail the laboratory fatigue testing of bridge steels and the simulated environmental exposure of AE transducer-mounting adhesives. AE monitoring is sensitive to the acoustic energy emitted by steel bridge members during the formation and growth of cracks. It is the only method that can distinguish between active and benign cracks. It is also possible to discriminate between AE caused by crack growth and irrelevant noise. AE information can be significant in making repair or replacement decisions, and AE could be used for the continuous remote monitoring of critical bridge members or even entire bridges.

Book Acoustic Emission Evaluation of Rc Beams and Bridges

Download or read book Acoustic Emission Evaluation of Rc Beams and Bridges written by Archana Nair and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2009-08 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A considerable proportion of highway bridges in the US, are made of reinforced concrete. Since there is a need to detect and recuperate the condition of the bridge structures numerous innovative non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques have come into the forefront. Of the many available technologies, acoustic emission (AE) monitoring has been the most popular passive non-destructive technique used on highway bridges. Usually AE monitoring is used to obtain qualitative results by observing the trends of the conventional AE parameters recorded by the data acquisition system. In this book, damage is quantified by applying the intensity analysis technique to conventional AE parameters generated from reinforced concrete members subjected to certain loads.
