Book excerpt: Solids that possess acidic properties on their surfaces function as catalysts just like liquid acids, such as sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid. By using solid acid catalysts, chemical processes become more productive and more environmentally friendly. In fact, solid acids are being used in many industrial chemical processes from the largest chem

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phenomenon of catalysis is found in many homogeneous and heterogeneous systems undergoing chemical change, where it effects the rates of approach to the equilibrium state in processes as diverse as those found in the stars, the earth's mantle, living organisms, and the various chemistries utilized by industry. The economies and the living standards of both developed and developing countries depend to varying degrees upon the efficacy of their chemical industries. Con sequently, this century has seen a wide exploration and expansion of catalytic chemistry together with an intensive investigation of specific, essential processes like those contributing to life-supporting agricultures. Prime among the latter must surely be the "fixation" of atmospheric nitrogen by catalytic hydrogenation to anhydrous ammonia, still the preferred synthetic precursor of the nitrogenous components of fertilizers. In each decade contemporary concepts and techniques have been used to further the understanding, as yet incomplete, of the catalyst, the adsorbates, the surface reactions, and the technology of large-scale operation. The contributors to the present volume review the state of the art, the science, and the technology; they reveal existing lacunae, and suggest ways forward. Around the turn of the century, Sabatier's school was extending the descriptive catalytic chemistry of hydrogenation by metals to include almost all types of multiple bond. The triple bond of dinitrogen, which continued to be more resistant than the somewhat similar bonds in carbon monoxide and ethyne, defied their efforts.

Book Catalysis by Acids and Bases

Download or read book Catalysis by Acids and Bases written by B. Imelik and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1985-02-01 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of the great importance of acid catalysis in the petrochemical industry, extensive research has been carried out during the last 30 years concerning the fundamental and applied aspects of catalysis by acids. In contrast, base-catalyzed reactions have received little attention in heterogeneous catalysis. The aim of this symposium was to evaluate our knowledge of the important area of acid and base catalysis and to cover a broad range of solids, zeolite chemistry being only one aspect of heterogeneous catalysis.

Book Acid Base Catalysis II

Download or read book Acid Base Catalysis II written by H. Hattori and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1994-11-01 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solid acid catalysts are already being used in various processes in petroleum refining and are presently being studied intensively in both academic and applied fields for usage in a variety of reactions. Solid base catalysts are also gaining increasing recognition as potential catalysts. Both acidic and basic catalysts are promising not only with respect to acid and base-catalyzed reactions but also in materials sciences, such as the production of adsorbents, sensors, ceramics, etc.The present volume presents the text of 21 invited oral presentations and 58 poster presentations. The material covers a wide range of aspects on acid-base catalysis, from quantum chemistry to industrialized processes.

Book Organotransition Metal Chemistry From Bonding to Catalysis

Download or read book Organotransition Metal Chemistry From Bonding to Catalysis written by John F. Hartwig and published by . This book was released on 2010-02-10 with total page 1172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on Collman et al.'s best-selling classic book, Principles and Applications of Organotransition Metal Chemistry, Hartwig's text consists of new or thoroughly updated and restructured chapters and provides an in-depth view into mechanism, reaction scope, and applications. It covers the most important developments in the field over the last twenty years with great clarity with a selective, but thorough and authoritative coverage of the fundamentals of organometallic chemistry, the elementary reactions of these complexes, and many catalytic processes occurring through organometallic intermediates, making this the Organotransition Metal Chemistry text for a new generation of scientists.
