Book New Names Introduced by H A Pilsbry in the Mollusca and Crustacea

Download or read book New Names Introduced by H A Pilsbry in the Mollusca and Crustacea written by William Clench and published by Academy of Natural Sciences. This book was released on 2007-12 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covers all of the new names created by Pilsbry & his co-authors for both Recent & Fossil forms in the Mollusca & Crustacea. These names range in taxa from those above the family level to subspecies, varieties & forms. This work had its inception when the authors found it necessary to ¿card out¿ the new names which Pilsbry had instituted so that these names might be used in their own current problems of research in the field of malacology. As time went on, this catalogue increased in size & became a source of information to the staff. Its publication has make available a large file of data not easily located elsewhere. He introduced 5,680 names over a period of 75 years; he introduced more names than any other student in the field of malacology.

Book Biology and Evolution of the Mollusca Volume 1

Download or read book Biology and Evolution of the Mollusca Volume 1 written by Winston Frank Ponder and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-11-18 with total page 900 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molluscs comprise the second largest phylum of animals (after arthropods), occurring in virtually all habitats. Some are commercially important, a few are pests and some carry diseases, while many non-marine molluscs are threatened by human impacts which have resulted in more extinctions than all tetrapod vertebrates combined. This book and its companion volume provide the first comprehensive account of the Mollusca in decades. Illustrated with hundreds of colour figures, it reviews molluscan biology, genomics, anatomy, physiology, fossil history, phylogeny and classification. This volume includes general chapters drawn from extensive and diverse literature on the anatomy and physiology of their structure, movement, reproduction, feeding, digestion, excretion, respiration, nervous system and sense organs. Other chapters review the natural history (including ecology) of molluscs, their interactions with humans, and assess research on the group. Key features of both volumes: up to date treatment with an extensive bibliography; thoroughly examines the current understanding of molluscan anatomy, physiology and development; reviews fossil history and phylogenetics; overviews ecology and economic values; and summarises research activity and suggests future directions for investigation. Winston F Ponder was a Principal Research Scientist at The Australian Museum in Sydney where he is currently a Research Fellow. He has published extensively over the last 55 years on the systematics, evolution, biology and conservation of marine and freshwater molluscs, as well as supervised post graduate students and run university courses. David R. Lindberg is former Chair of the Department of Integrative Biology, Director of the Museum of Paleontology, and Chair of the Berkeley Natural History Museums, all at the University of California. He has conducted research on the evolutionary history of marine organisms and their habitats on the rocky shores of the Pacific Rim for more than 40 years. The numerous elegant and interpretive illustrations were produced by Juliet Ponder.

Book Hawaiian Natural History Ecology and Evolution

Download or read book Hawaiian Natural History Ecology and Evolution written by Alan C. Ziegler and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2002-09-30 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not since Willam A. Bryan's 1915 landmark compendium, Hawaiian Natural History, has there been a single-volume work that offers such extensive coverage of this complex but fascinating subject. Illustrated with more than two dozen color plates and a hundred photographs and line drawings, Hawaiian Natural History, Ecology, and Evolution updates both the earlier publication and subsequent works by compiling and synthesizing in a uniform and accessible fashion the widely scattered information now available. Readers can trace the natural history of the Hawaiian Archipelago through the book's twenty-eight chapters or focus on specific topics such as island formation by plate tectonics, plant and animal evolution, flightless birds and their fossil sites, Polynesian migrational history and ecology, the effects of humans and exotic animals on the environment, current conservation efforts, and the contributions of the many naturalists who visited the islands over the centuries and the stories behind their discoveries. An extensive annotated bibliography and a list of audio-visual materials will help readers locate additional sources of information.
