Book excerpt: “...not your typical historical romance, grasps your attention from the first page to the very last. It is action packed with twists and turns... difficult to put down.”—Aldine Crick, Goodreads Reviewer Will love deliver them from evil, or will secrets seal their doom? Her father’s mad will sends Elizabeth far away from a sheltered life in the English countryside to her aunt and uncle's vineyard in Venetia, and into a household of neglect and apparent lunacy. The Viscount Canterbourne rescues Elizabeth from ruffians, and his mysterious story captivates her imagination even as his heroics and kindness captivate her heart. But when she encounters the nightmarish Lord Orefados and realizes the mage has imprisoned a friend in the remains of an ancient abbey, Elizabeth hurtles into a maelstrom of peril and dark sorcery. Lord Canterbourne is full of pain and questions at the loss of his estranged father. He hopes the testamentary letter will explain all. Instead it sends him on a fool’s errand to deliver a box (which he must never open) to a man he has only ever seen once: shadowy, eccentric Lord Orefados. With Elizabeth he shares an instant connection. Who else can understand his heart but a woman who has also been at the whim of parental madness, a woman who also bears the stigma of a paternal oddity? When he discovers his dark family history and a secret wrong against Elizabeth’s parents, however, Canterbourne fears he can never tell her the truth. Yet if he doesn’t, he could lose her to the ensorcellments of Orefados, whose obsession with an outlandish ritual is reaching a fever pitch. Can seduction break the spell? Will love deliver them from evil, or will secrets seal their doom? Book The Rise of Digital Management

Download or read book The Rise of Digital Management written by François-Xavier de Vaujany and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-06-03 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the history of management, placing it in perspective with both American history and the genealogy of digital technology. Focusing on the years of industrial mobilization in the United States (from 1937 to 1945) and their extension into the Cold War, it shows particularly how "scientific management" was reconfigured and re-legitimized in favor of a new profoundly American geopolitics. In a context where the future was at a standstill, this research also explains what became of the managerial processes at the heart of capitalism from the 40s onwards: the shift from a managerial capitalism of calculation to a narrative capitalism made up of "desiring machines". This digital management no longer simply contributes, along with others, to unveiling and revealing the future. Aligned with the American obsession with novelty, it is the very process of revelation and unveiling, with managers and consumers alike becoming the intersecting subjects of desires borne of managerial apocalypses. To explore this period of American history, the author has combined a triple narrative anchored in three types of archives: an intimate history of this reconfiguration from the presence in New York of Saint-Exupéry, Burnham and Wiener; a description of the great historical moment of industrial mobilization; and a philosophical speculation about reconfiguration and its links to American history.

Book The Chronicle of Glastonbury Abbey

Download or read book The Chronicle of Glastonbury Abbey written by James P. Carley and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 1985 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John of Glastonbury's chronicle represents an attempt to summarise the lore and learning about Glastonbury Abbey and its past available in the fourteenth century, a body of knowledge which changed very little before the Reformation. The author drew on a large number of sources and edited these skilfully to form his narrative, while preserving the earlier text almost intact. The result is the fullest medieval account of the abbey and its legends. A translation is included, which makes the important text available in English for the first time, and the whole volume is designed as a companion to John Scott's edition and translation of William of Malmesbury's twelfth-century account of the abbey's history.

Jhee and her polygamous household have settled into life in the capital, and for once, things seem peaceful. A war crimes tribunal against the doctors of the Medical Protectorate is underway, and Jhee has been asked to assist with it. When invited to an Imperial retreat by their old Captain, he tells them that Jhee's old friend has gone missing. Jhee is concerned about her, as the friend had not been herself when they last met, and when her husband mentions that another of his friends is also missing, her suspicions are raised further. As she delves into the mystery, she uncovers more unsavory facts about her first and senior husband, who has become involved with a violent club of ex-military berserkers. When one of the missing friends turns up at her house, it seems that at least something is going her way. It isn't long before their friend disappears once more, and shortly afterward, berserkers and seemingly ordinary people turn up dead. Now, Jhee has a real mystery to contend with, as they had all been mugged days before their deaths. Who is responsible for their deaths? The answers lie closer to home than Jhee would like to admit. But how can she prove who committed these crimes and avoid the suspicions of the secret police, who think she is somehow involved?
