Book excerpt: An indispensable companion and guide to one of the world's great archaeological sites The three-thousand-year-old rock-cut temples at Abu Simbel and the story of their rescue from the rising waters of Lake Nasser in the 1960s are almost as familiar worldwide as the tale of the gold funerary mask and brief life of the boy king Tutankhamun. Yet although they are among the most celebrated, visited, and photographed archaeological sites in the world, the two temples are among the least understood by the visitor. In this lucidly written, beautifully illustrated guide, Nigel Fletcher-Jones explains the main features of both temples, discusses what they teach us about ancient Egypt during the reign of Rameses II (1265-1200 BC), and illustrates which gods and goddesses were worshipped here. With over 50 new photographs, drawings, and diagrams, and packed with fascinating insights, Abu Simbel: A Short Guide to the Templesis an indispensable companion and souvenir to one of the world's great archaeological sites.

Book Early Chinese Religion

Download or read book Early Chinese Religion written by John Lagerwey and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-10-30 with total page 1584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the Warring States, treated in Part One of this set, there is no more fecund era in Chinese religious and cultural history than the period of division (220-589 AD). During it, Buddhism conquered China, Daoism grew into a mature religion with independent institutions, and, together with Confucianism, these three teachings, having each won its share of state recognition and support, formed a united front against shamanism. While all four religions are covered, Buddhism and Daoism receive special attention in a series of parallel chapters on their pantheons, rituals, sacred geography, community organization, canon formation, impact on literature, and recent archaeological discoveries. This multi-disciplinary approach, without ignoring philosophical and theological issues, brings into sharp focus the social and historical matrices of Chinese religion.

Book To Abu Simbel and Back

    Book Details:
  • Author : Otto Schmalz
  • Publisher : FriesenPress
  • Release : 2021-11-09
  • ISBN : 1039120202
  • Pages : 457 pages

Download or read book To Abu Simbel and Back written by Otto Schmalz and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2021-11-09 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In November 2001, mere months after the deadly attacks in New York on 9/11, Otto Schmalz and his wife embarked on a journey to Egypt. With security being more stringent and fewer travellers venturing outside of their homelands, tourism in Egypt was down ninety percent, which made it easier to get a close look at the breath-taking monuments and temples. For fourteen days, Otto and his tour companions cruised the Nile for nine days as well as toured the remainder by bus and visited many temples along and away from that great river. It was an eye-opening experience to discover how advanced the ancient Egyptian empires were thousands of years ago. Rather than channelling their strength and ambition to conquering the world, the powerful Egyptians put their energies into building structures and artwork with their bare hands that had not been equaled anywhere else. From the massive pylons at the Luxor Temple to Abu Simbel and the Great Sphinx at Giza, Otto describes in detail the historical significance of the sites he visited during this incredible journey. He also relates his interesting interactions with the people (and some animals) that he came in contact with, from his knowledgeable tour guide to security guards to his colourful travel mates. To Abu Simbel and Back whisks the reader away to ancient Egypt and hopefully leaves them wanting to visit this incredible country in person.

Book Propaganda

Download or read book Propaganda written by Henry Conserva and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written in response to the wishes of several readers of my book, Propaganda Techniques, who wanted to have me probe somewhat deeper into the subject of propaganda. After some discussions with teachers and students, I used some of their ideas to come up with ten questions. This gave me the title of this book, Propaganda: A Question and Answer Approach, Having developed a list of question I went about the task of trying to answer them as best as I could. My hope is that the book will be useful to teachers, students, persuasive writers and advertisers as well as general readers.

Book From 4 F to U S Navy Surgeon General

Download or read book From 4 F to U S Navy Surgeon General written by Harold M. Koenig, M.D. and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2019-04-16 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1959, Harold M. Koenig was discharged after his first year at the U.S. Naval Academy because of progressive hearing loss and went on to college, then medical school. In 1965, the draft board notified him that upon completion of his internship in 1967 he would be drafted despite his disability--as the conflict in Vietnam escalated, many doctors with previously disqualifying medical conditions were reclassified as eligible to serve. Rather than wait to be drafted, Koenig volunteered for a Navy program that made him an ensign and paid all expenses for his final year of medical school. His memoir recounts his remarkable career path from 4-F midshipman to vice admiral and his service in the most senior positions in military medicine.
