Book excerpt: This expert study discusses the development and evolution of the tank and the tactics behind its employment, covering both its capabilities as a weapons system and its strategic use on the battlefield. Tanks: An Illustrated History of the Their Impact follows the development of tracked-and-armored fighting vehicles across the 20th century, from the world wars to the Cold War battlefields of Korea and Vietnam; and from Arab–Israeli conflicts to the Persian Gulf. The book describes the distinctive characteristics and capabilities of each new generation of tank, as well as the formulation of armored doctrines and deployment strategies in France, Britain, Germany, the Soviet Union, the United States, Japan, Israel, and the Arab nations. It is an expert introduction to how the role of the tank has changed over time, a story of technological innovation, strategic daring, desperate battles (Stalingrad, Kursk), and charismatic commanders like Erwin Rommel and George S. Patton (who defeated Rommel's division by following a plan from the Desert Fox's own book).

Book A25 Harry Hopkins Tank SP3 Alecto A Technical History

Download or read book A25 Harry Hopkins Tank SP3 Alecto A Technical History written by P. M. Knight and published by . This book was released on 2022-04-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Harry Hopkins was a light tank designed by Vickers-Armstrongs at Chertsey as an intended improvement to their previous Tetrarch model, featuring thicker armour and a more ergonomic internal layout. Unfortunately, it met much the same fate as the earlier vehicle due to the doubts of the War Office as to the efficacy of light tanks in general. After an aborted inititative to employ it as an airborne tank, the A25 chassis was used as the basis for the Alecto self-propelled howitzer, a mechanically superlative machine that was also stymied by uncertainty as to its importance and ultimate role. This book covers the development of both vehicles, which followed a course that was as fascinating as it was frustrating.

Book A34 Comet Tank A Technical History

Download or read book A34 Comet Tank A Technical History written by P. M. Knight and published by . This book was released on 2016-11-25 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The A34 Comet was the ultimate iteration of the Cruiser series of fast, mobile tanks, and built on the hard lessons that had been learned with earlier designs. However, it was also brought into being at a time when British industrial capacity was nearing exhaustion, and when officialdom already had one eye on the transition to more profitable peacetime production. As such, the Comet saga was one of the husbanding of the scarce, and declining, resources available to the tank programme against the backdrop of a conflict whose end was already in sight. As this book demonstrates in depth, the result was a well-balanced design that optimised the possibilities presented by the previous Cruisers. However, it would be outshone by its ubiquitous successor, the A41 Centurion.

Book A13 Cruiser Mk V Covenanter a Technical History

Download or read book A13 Cruiser Mk V Covenanter a Technical History written by P. M. Knight and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book documents for the first time the full history of the design and development of the Covenanter tank, giving in-depth coverage of the issues that beset the machine, and how they were eventually resolved. It dispels many of the myths that have attached themselves to the Covenanter story, revealing that far from being a compromised design whose problems with cooling and reliability were never cured, it was in fact a sound vehicle whose problems need never have arisen in the first place, were it not for the urgent need for tanks of any description in the aftermath of the disaster of the Battle Of France. This led to the premature introduction of the Covenanter before its development had been completed, with a consequent impact on its reputation. Contrary to popular belief, the Covenanter was judged fit for frontline service, and only missed out by the narrowest of margins. Drawn from original archive sources, this book sheds new light on one of the most controversial weapons of World War 2.

Book A43 Black Prince Tank a Technical History

Download or read book A43 Black Prince Tank a Technical History written by P. M. Knight and published by . This book was released on 2018-10-16 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The A43 Black Prince arose from the need for a "Super Churchill", armed with the powerful 17 pounder anti-tank gun that could augment the firepower of the standard Churchills within the tank brigades. The resulting machine would prove to be both durable and reliable during evaluation testing, and promised to be an effective weapon in the hands of users. However, the war would come to an end before production could commence, and the AFV Division of the Ministry of Supply would instead concentrate on newer designs for the post-war era. This book provides an in-depth examination of the legendary Black Prince, and its place within the history of British tank design.

Book A13 Cruiser Mk V Covenanter Tank a Technical History

Download or read book A13 Cruiser Mk V Covenanter Tank a Technical History written by P. M. Knight and published by . This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Covenanter was intended to be the main equipment of the Armoured Divisions during the early years of the Second World War, and was a generally reliable tank that was well suited to its primary task of home defence. Due to a rather convoluted series of events, mainly involving material shortages, it would not see service overseas, and as Britain's strategic circumstances evolved it would increasingly be used as a training tank. If the Covenanter's active service was relatively uneventful, its development life was the very opposite, with two drastically different variants of the original machine being created, and constant refinement being undertaken while it was in the hands of its users. The Covenanter was reflective of the many blind spots in the British Army's pre-war thinking as regards Armoured Fighting Vehicles, and from its travails much practical experience was gained that benefited subsequent tank designs.

Book excerpt: This installation in R. P. Huunnicutt's legendary 10-volume history of American tanks and armored vehicles provides a detailed survey of the American light tank's developmental history, culminating with the M551 Sheridan AR/AAV and the vehicles based on its design. In the period directly after WWII, the Army became interested in developing a light tank. Hunnicutt begins by detailing the program that eventually produced the M41 series of 76mm gun tanks that were designed to fulfill this interest. At 25 tons, the M4 was considered to be too heavy in spite of its popularity with the troops that operated it. Programs developed in an effort to produce a lighter-weight tank resulted in the T71 and T92 tanks, both of which retained the 76mm gun and weighed in at about 17 tons. However, once it was discovered that Soviet tanks of the same caliber were amphibious, the T92 was scrapped to redirect design efforts to an amphibious light tank. This new program produced the XM551 Sheridan, no longer designated as a tank but rather as an "armored reconnaissance/airborne assault vehicle", or AR/AAV for short. An extremely complex design, the M551 Sheridan AR/AAV was plagued by problems with its weapons system in its early stages. The vehicle required a great deal of frequent maintenance which made it unpopular with troops regardless of the fact that it provided a wide range of services. It was phased out of service in the late 1970s. Part III of this book covers the development of a future replacement for the Sheridan. Part IV covers several other light tracked combat vehicles. Boasting dozens of detailed illustrations, line drawings and photographs, as well as the depth, precision, and nuance for which R. P. Hunnicutt's books are renowned, Sheridan: A History of the American Light Tank is a must-have for anyone with a keen interest in American military history. Book Crusader and Centaur Anti Aircraft Tanks a Technical History

Download or read book Crusader and Centaur Anti Aircraft Tanks a Technical History written by P. M. Knight and published by . This book was released on 2024-02-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The various Crusader and Centaur anti-aircraft tanks were the products of a long and tortuous development process over which time the enormous complexity of the problem of dealing with aerial targets emerged. In contrast to ground targets, aircraft could appear unexpectedly from any direction and complete an attack in mere seconds, while their relative velocity would increase and decrease exponentially as approached and exited the target area. This in turn necessitated a turret control system that could switch direction onto a new target almost instantly, while retaining fine control at both the minimum and maximum engagement velocities. It would also need to be controllable in traverse and elevation characteristics simultaneously. What would eventually emerge after much consequent delay was an effective equipment that found itself being deployed after the Luftwaffe had already been reduced to its weakest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Stuart: A History of the American Light Tank (Vol. I), Richard Hunnicutt outlines the development history of the American light tank and its associated self-propelled guns and support vehicles. Beginning with the modification of the French Renault in the midst of WWI, Stuart covers all pre-Stuart vehicles active during WWI in addition to light tank models and variations active during WWII, with emphasis on the wartime development of M3, M5, and M24 series of light tanks. A few other vehicles that are not technically light tanks, such as the M18 and LVT, also receive attention here as they share a number of key characteristics with the Stuart. In this comprehensive history, Hunnicutt also touches on postwar modifications and service of vehicles developed during WWII. In addition to detailing nearly all aspects of technical data and specifications, Stuart features images on nearly every page: photographs, full-color plates, line drawings, and cutaway diagrams, many of which are rare interior shots and diagrams from technical manuals. While Hunnicutt leaves the writing of the complete combat history of the Stuart to those who manned them in battle, he includes some of the Stuart's actions to demonstrate its uses in combat and attributes, both positive and negative. The definitive reference tome for the military historian, professional soldier, and tank restorer, Stuart remains the most comprehensive history on the American light tank's development from its beginnings through WWII. Richard Pearce Hunnicutt (1926-2011) enlisted in the 7th Infantry Division in 1944 and in 1945 was promoted to sergeant and awarded the Silver Star for his heroic actions. After WWII, Hunnicutt earned a Masters in engineering from Stanford University under the GI Bill. In addition to being one of the most respected metallurgists in California, Hunnicutt wrote the definitive 10-volume history of the development and employment of American armored vehicles. As a tank historian and leading expert in the field, Hunnicutt was one of the founders of the US Army Ordnance Museum at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD and was a close friend and frequent contributor to the Patton Museum at Fort Knox, KY. Book A13 Mk I Mk II Cruiser Tanks A Technical History

Download or read book A13 Mk I Mk II Cruiser Tanks A Technical History written by P. M. Knight and published by . This book was released on 2019-08-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The A13 Cruiser Tank was created by Colonel Giffard Le Quesne Martel after he had witnessed the performance of the fast Soviet BT tanks while on a military mission to Russia in 1936. These had in turn been developed from a prototype tank designed by the mercurial American engineer J. Walter Christie. The British Army quickly imported one of Christie's tanks and set about modifying it to suit their requirements, in collaboration with Lord Nuffield. The result, achieved in a mere two years, was a powerfully armed, highly mobile, though lightly armoured tank. This book follows the development history of the A13 up to and including the Battle of France, where any merits it may have possessed were overshadowed by poor preparation and the inadequate organisation and tactics of the Royal Armoured Corps.

Book British Battle Tanks

Download or read book British Battle Tanks written by David Fletcher and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-08-24 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lavishly illustrated volume details the design, development and operational history of the British-made tanks in World War II. Plagued by unreliable vehicles and poorly thought-out doctrine, the early years of World War II were years of struggle for Britain's tank corps. Relying on tanks built in the late 1930s, and those designed and built with limited resources in the opening years of the war, they battled valiantly against an opponent well versed in the arts of armoured warfare. This book is the second of a multi-volume history of British tanks by renowned British armour expert David Fletcher MBE. It covers the development and use of the Matilda, Crusader, and Valentine tanks that pushed back the Axis in North Africa, the much-improved Churchill that fought with distinction from North Africa to Normandy, and the excellent Cromwell tank of 1944–45. It also looks at Britain's super-heavy tank projects, the TOG1 and TOG2, and the Tortoise heavy assault tank, designed to smash through the toughest of battlefield conditions, but never put into production.
