Book Big Bad Bodie High Sierra Ghost Town

Download or read book Big Bad Bodie High Sierra Ghost Town written by Doug Brodie and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2001-03-01 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mid-19th century mining town of Bodie, California located at 8,369 feet, atop the Sierra Nevada Mountains, just 3 1/2 miles from the Nevada border, was considered one of the richest gold and silver mining towns in the west. Geologists who know of its present rich ore deposits, say it could have been again, but since it became a California historic state park in 1962, that possibility was terminated. The old town, now the best preserved ghost town in the Nation, is maintained in a state of arrested decay by the State of California, meaning it will never be restored to its once rough and tough condition of the 1870s, but it is prevented from further deterioration through a system of constant repair. The public is encouraged to visit the old town, and this book is a compilation of stories, news items, historic information, and reports of its past, some true, some possibly true, and some probably outright lies by citizens of the past and news reporters who wrote for the many old newspapers that described life as it was lived in the years immediately following the Civil War. Authors Jim Watson, photographer, and Doug Brodie, former newspaper reporter, have obtained items heretofore never explained nor described in writings about the old town. Their research has made this book a one of a kind publication.

Book excerpt: Take a journey with me, back to California's golden days. The search for gold is never sleeping. Get to know the people from our own past while reading "Bodie: The Golden Years." The book is a fictional portrayal of the pioneer women and children of the 1860-1900 era. What did they wear? Where did they go to school? Who were these early hardy folk? Like a stage ride through the western days you will get introduced to several real life characters--Elizabeth and Helen Anne Kernohan, Margaret and Alice Beck, Suzy Bill, Delilah and Jessie (Doll) Cain. To add dimension I have added a fictionalized Chinese resident, Pearl Chung.

Book The Old Iron Road

Download or read book The Old Iron Road written by David Haward Bain and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2022-09 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 2000 David Haward Bain and his family left their home in Vermont and headed west in search of America’s past. Spiritually, their journey began on a Kansas trail where the author’s grandmother was born in a covered wagon in 1889. Between the Missouri River and the Golden Gate, they retraced the entire route of the first transcontinental railroad and large stretches of the Oregon and California trails, and the equally colorful old Lincoln Highway. Following vanished iron rails and wagon wheel ruts, bumping down backroads and main streets, they discovered the deep, restless, uniquely American spirit of adventure that connects our past to our present. A superb writer and an exacting researcher, Bain conjures up a marvelous sense of coming unstuck in time as he lingers in the ghost towns and battlegrounds, prairies and river ports, trainyards, museums, deserts, and diners that line his cruise west to California. Bain encounters a fascinating cast of characters, both historic and contemporary, as well as memories of his grandparents and the journeys that shaped his own heritage. Writing in the tradition of William Least Heat-Moon and Ian Frazier, and with an engaging warmth and a deep grasp of history all his own, Bain has fashioned a quintessentially American journey.

But citizens are tired of jokey references to the spelling of the name, and elders in the camp decide to change the town's name to "Bodie." To mark the occasion, they recover Body's remains and schedule a funeral and town rechristening on the Fourth of July. News of the grand event makes its way to New York and sets off a battle in Daniel Owen's household, a battle which becomes intense when Billie Owen discovers she's the sole offspring of William Body. A plucky gal with Dime-novel credentials, Billie rebels and heads west to honor her true father. Upon arriving in camp, Billie learns her father died from a radial fracture to the head. Within days, Billie's friend Rusty winds up at the end of a rope. Suddenly, there are killers on the loose and vigilantes in the streets. Book Breaking History Lost America

Download or read book Breaking History Lost America written by Don Rauf and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breaking History books offer a front row seat to history as it broke (like “breaking news”) and give the blow-by-blow of historical discovery—what we learned, when we learned it, who made the discovery, and how. Lost America is an illustrated look at fascinating places in the United States that have existed only in myth and have never been found, those that were abandoned and why, and those that were lost to social upheaval or natural disaster. The book reviews the history behind these places—how they began, how long they endured, why they were lost, and how many have been rediscovered. Included are accounts of the mysterious disappearance of the Anasazi from the Southwest, the abandonment of the Roanoke Colony in 1590, the environmental disaster that caused the population of Centralia, Pennsylvania to evacuate the town in the 1980s, and the nearly-intact ghost town of Bodie, California. The book also includes places that were thought to exist, but did not--or not yet, anyway: legendary Norse settlements, lost cities of gold, and The Fountain of Youth.
