Book excerpt: As war consumes Britain, the struggle for a nation continues. South East Britain, 447 A.D. Hengest and Horsa - two Jutish exiles - have made names for themselves as raiders and pirates, plundering the coast and striking terror into the hearts of merchants and British noblemen. They take what they want and, as their power grows, they set their sights on larger prizes. But in the Byzantine corridors of the great town of Londinium, the ruling powers are plotting war. Lord Vertigernus, head of the Council of Britannia, desires an alliance with these pagans from across the sea and will stop at nothing to get it. Soon, Hengest and Horsa are drawn into the political power plays of post-Roman Britain where little is what it seems and none are to be trusted. Ambrosius Aurelianus - the last military master of the Britons - marches north to wage war on the Picts. Hengest and Horsa ride under his banner as mercenaries fighting for the land promised them by Lord Vertigernus. As shields are splintered and blood is shed in the dim forests of the north, events are put in motion that will have both catastrophic and defining results for the struggling island of Britain.

Download or read book Warlords written by Kimberly Marten and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2012-06-10 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Warlords are individuals who control small territories within weak states, using a combination of force and patronage. In this book, Kimberly Marten shows why and how warlords undermine state sovereignty. Unlike the feudal lords of a previous era, warlords today are not state-builders. Instead they collude with cost-conscious, corrupt, or frightened state officials to flout and undermine state capacity. They thrive on illegality, relying on private militias for support, and often provoke violent resentment from those who are cut out of their networks. Some act as middlemen for competing states, helping to hollow out their own states from within. Countries ranging from the United States to Russia have repeatedly chosen to ally with warlords, but Marten argues that to do so is a dangerous proposition. Drawing on interviews, documents, local press reports, and in-depth historical analysis, Marten examines warlordism in the Pakistani tribal areas during the twentieth century, in post-Soviet Georgia and the Russian republic of Chechnya, and among Sunni militias in the U.S.-supported Anbar Awakening and Sons of Iraq programs. In each case state leaders (some domestic and others foreign) created, tolerated, actively supported, undermined, or overthrew warlords and their militias. Marten draws lessons from these experiences to generate new arguments about the relationship between states, sovereignty, "local power brokers," and stability and security in the modern world.

Book excerpt: THE EMPIRE STRIKES A DEAL The history of the planet Kariek has been one of seemingly endless violence— thanks to the constantly erupting revolutions among the many divided tribes of the native Eickarie race battling for dominance. Yet none of these tribes has held sway since a mysterious Warlord and his legion of alien mercenaries seized power and began a fifty-year reign of terror. Now, at last, the tide may be turning: the leaders of the warring Eickarie factions have forged an alliance—strong enough to capture a city and corner the Warlord and his minions in their fortress. And the post-Palpatine Empire of the Hand is lending support to this revolt against tyranny by deploying no less a fighting force than the Imperial 501st Legion of stormtroopers. Once infamously known as “Vader’s Fist,” the legendary 501st are the best men for the dangerous objective at hand—capturing the Warlord alive. It’s a risky mission that might be jeopardized when Imperial unit commander Twister and his comrades, Shadow, Cloud, and Watchman, are waylaid by a band of zealous freedom fighters, armed with their own agenda . . . and plenty of firepower. The Eickarie renegades—determined to free hundreds of their people from the Warlord’s dungeons—have an offer to make, and a strategy that could give the Imperials the edge in the bloody showdown to come. But can Twister and his men trust their new allies? Or will they get more than they bargain for? This novella includes an excerpt from the novel STAR WARS: SURVIVOR'S QUEST by Timothy Zahn and an interview with the author.

Book Non State Challenges in a Re Ordered World

Download or read book Non State Challenges in a Re Ordered World written by Stefano Ruzza and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-10-14 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a sprawling scholarship on violence, crime, and corrupt state rule; yet few have interpreted these challenges as transformative at the global scale and as a potential source of alternative, non-state, legitimacy. This volume challenges "Westphalian conservativism" in a provocative yet plausible manner, shedding light at the ubiquity and diversity of unfolding non-state agendas and at their effect on the imagined state community. Focusing on civil war parties, warlords, commercial providers of security, multinational companies and criminal organizations, the book directs attention to theoretical questions and policy challenges arising from non-state armed expansion. To accomplish this, the contributors present a range of case studies and comparisons within three thematic sections: the first takes stock of how, when, and in what measure state and state-system legitimacy are challenged by non-state violent or criminal activity; the second addresses the nature, effectiveness, and side-effects of different state-mandated reaction to non-state activities; and third focuses on the recombination of state and non-state actors contributing to processes of socio-political transformation. This volume provides a current analysis of different armed and violent actors encroaching on the state's monopoly of violence. It seeks to spark debate about global political change and will be of interest to students and scholars of global governance, global security, and international relations.

Book Through Alien Eyes

Download or read book Through Alien Eyes written by Wesley H. Bateman and published by Light Technology Publishing. This book was released on 2001-04-01 with total page 823 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The accounts given by extraterrestrials in this volume are about events that occurred in our solar system many millions of years ago. In that ancient time the solar system consisted of four planets and four "radiar systems" that orbited the central sun. The four planets of the solar system are known today as Venus, Earth, Mars and a now-totally shattered world that was called Maldec. The term "radiar" applies to the astronomical bodies we presently call Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. The original satellites of these radiars are generally called moons by Earth astronomers, but the extraterrestrials prefer to call them planetoids. This book reflects the personal views of a number of different types of extraterrestrials regarding the state of the local solar system and the state of the Earth.

Which is why I was on the seedy-underbelly of the internet, cruising for a hacking job. I had no idea Hunter Davies, the elusive tech giant, was watching me, and when I passed his little impromptu pop-quiz, he sent armed men to bring me to his estate. And let me tell you…he is a piece of work! He’s disgustingly rich, with arrogance in spades. He should be in jail for what he’s done to me! But…he offered me a job. One that could make all my problems disappear. And as much as I hate to admit it…he’s flippin’ other-worldly levels of gorgeous!
