And now, they must outrun those who think they're better off dead. With Arcadian assassins trying to kill them at every turn, a group of hybrid beasts thirsty for their blood, and the ruler of all Arcadia desperate to find them, Rosa and Alessandro must find out the truth behind Arcadia once and for all. Download or read book Vanished Kingdoms written by Norman Davies and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2012-01-05 with total page 837 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An evocative account of fourteen European kingdoms-their rise, maturity, and eventual disappearance. There is something profoundly romantic about lost civilizations. Europe's past is littered with states and kingdoms, large and small, that are scarcely remembered today, and while their names may be unfamiliar-Aragon, Etruria, the Kingdom of the Two Burgundies-their stories should change our mental map of the past. We come across forgotten characters and famous ones-King Arthur and Macbeth, Napoleon and Queen Victoria, right up to Stalin and Gorbachev-and discover how faulty memory can be, and how much we can glean from these lost empires. Davies peers through the cracks in the mainstream accounts of modern-day states to dazzle us with extraordinary stories of barely remembered pasts, and of the traces they left behind. This is Norman Davies at his best: sweeping narrative history packed with unexpected insights. Vanished Kingdoms will appeal to all fans of unconventional and thought-provoking history, from readers of Niall Ferguson to Jared Diamond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This selection of essays examines the future of art in a changing world. In particular, contributors discuss the agency of art in conditions of ecological threats to the natural world, to climate change and the effects of globalisation, neoliberal economics and mass tourism. Following the lead of Chicago-based Frances Whitehead, whose essay is a key text, some contributors take positions on working with local government agencies to embed art-thinking within development projects, going back to the art-thinking at the centre of Kazimir Malevich’s work in Vitebsk one hundred years ago in Russia. Other papers highlight small-scale art interventions that bring ecological issues to public notice and suggest positive responses, whilst others discuss large-scale problems brought about by the social, economic and laissez-faire history of the emerging Anthropocene with possible dystopic outcomes.

Book Manufacturing Otherness

Download or read book Manufacturing Otherness written by Sergio Botta and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discovery of the New World offered European civilisation the chance to generate a process of circulation of its own cultural values – the “spiritual conquest” – that has no comparable precedents. The missionary orders played an important role during this “Westernisation of the world,” not only as key players in the spread of Christian values, but also as mediators between different worlds. Indeed, missionary practices imposed the dominating culture’s values and institutions on the vanquished peoples. At the same time, they also promoted the circulation of new knowledge and the negotiation between different cultures during the age of a global integration of space. This book looks at the vast field of study concerning the history of missions from a specific viewpoint. Firstly, it focuses on “local” processes, singling out specific case studies to be used for a general reflection. On the other hand, it refocuses the attention on the Indigenous cultures – which the missionaries helped to bring to light in the field of Western history – showing how they succeeded in entering the areas of negotiation created by missionaries, and in producing their own cultural subjectivity.
