Download or read book Mormon Studies written by Ronald Helfrich, Jr. and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2021-12-30 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mormonism arose in early 19th century New York and has fired the imaginations of its devotees, critics, and students ever since. Some intellectuals and academics read Mormonism as the product of economic change wrought by the Erie Canal in the Burned-over District of western New York State and upper north-eastern Ohio. Others read Mormonism as an authoritarian reaction to Jacksonian democracy. Finally, some, including most of those who became Mormons in the early 19th century and most of those who are believing Mormons today, read Mormonism as the intervention of God in human history. This book engages with Mormon Studies from its beginnings in the early nineteenth century to the end of the 20th century. It covers those who fought over Mormonism's truth or falsity, on those who tried to understand Mormonism as a religious and sociological phenomenon, and on those who explored the history of Mormonism from a more dispassionate perspective. It concludes with an exploration of the culture war that erupted as Mormon Studies professionalized particularly after the 1960s.

Book Development Begins at Home

Download or read book Development Begins at Home written by C. A. O. Van Nieuwenhuijze and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development Begins at Home: Problems and Prospects of the Sociology of Development examines the challenges posed by development to the field of sociology. The book first reviews colonialism and the emergent One World in terms of the history of ideas; discusses attitudes towards development; and examines the definitions of development. These are followed by separate chapters on the contributions of sociology to development studies. The considerable wealth of sociology in dealing with change and, to a lesser extent, with development is identified. Subsequent chapters examine points of departure for current and prospective work in the sociology of development. One is the profile of underdevelopment, sociologically understood, along with the matching configuration of development goals. Another is the true meaning of social development, as opposed to economic development. The main finding is that development may well cause the general outlook of sociology to change. The prospect is for a sociology of human dignity in the social nexus.

Book The Typology of Community A Case Study Analysis of Three Intentional Communities

Download or read book The Typology of Community A Case Study Analysis of Three Intentional Communities written by Caleb Kalinowski and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Typological schemes like those produced by Emile Durkheim and Ferdinand Tönnies have been used to classify human groups in an evolutionary spectrum ranging from the simple to the complex. Though the typological approach was foundational to further development of the western social sciences it is seldom used to examine what might be termed “simple” societies in the modern day. This study aims to apply the contributions of the two theorists listed above to the concept of the modern intentional community. Although these communities comprise an eclectic and diverse social phenomenon, their characteristic small populations and other features make them intriguing subjects for the application of theoretical concepts previously reserved for earlier cultural groups existing peripheral to the developed state.

Book In Patient Treatment for Alcoholism

Download or read book In Patient Treatment for Alcoholism written by Heinrich Küfner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In-patient treatment for alcoholism going beyond physical withdrawal from the drug has been available in Germany for more than 130 years. Particularly since the Second World War, treatment has broadened and changed in various ways. There are several reasons for this development. The recognition of alcoholism as a disease by the Supreme Court had widespread financial and administrative consequences. Since then in patient treatment has been funded mainly by the pension insurance institutions. Another reason is the strengthened influence of different psychotherapeutic schools on practice in treatment. At the present time in the Federal Republic of Germany there are about 250 treatment facilities (Suchtfachkliniken, or addiction centres), where around 25000 patients a year receive in-patient treatment. In addition to these, there are the addiction units in psychiatric and general hospitals, of which some offer withdrawal treatment, while others also offer rehabilit ation treatment. For out-patient treatment there are about 450 special addiction counselling and treatment centres, out-patient facilities available at local health authorities and university hospitals and, further to all this, there are thousands of self-help groups of various kinds. This system of interlocking treatment facilities of various kinds, from the first contact to the after-care stage, is called a treatment network or chain.
