Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Doctrine of the Atonement Christianity, like every other system, consists of certain leading principles, which are interwoven with its very texture, and have as close and intimate a connexion with each other, as the links of a chain; - if one be broken, the whole is dissolved. That the doctrine of the Atonement forms one of these principles has never been denied, except by those who have refined upon Christianity, till it can scarcely be distinguished from a system of ethics. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the Doctrine of the Atonement This brief history of the doctrine of the Atonement is an attempt to fill a gap in a literature already voluminous. It is the outcome of a series of lectures given to theological students, in the course of which I found the difficulty of referring my pupils to any book which made the sources accessible in a systematic manner. I have tried to meet this need by using quotation as far as possible, and by giving the zlosissima verba of the original Greek or Latin in footnotes throughout. The quotations are usually taken from current translations, but I have sometimes made my own version. There is no pretence at completeness, which would demand a far larger treatise, but it is hoped that no considerable development has been ignored, and that sufficient comment has been introduced to make the history both readable and consecutive. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Substitution: A Treatise on the Atonement All human goodness and blessingstand in vital relation to the mediatorial government of God. So far as theology faithfully reveals God and His ways towards man, it presents the highest standard and motives of duty, and unveils the rich provisions of grace. To repudiate it, therefore, is to remove the most fitting basis of human virtue and happiness. History abounds with evidence that pure doctrine is the true seed of high morality and spiritual peace. A man, or a people, abandoning belief of the fundamental truths of Christianity, or allowing them to die out as of no practical use, may retain for a time something of the morality and reverent spirit which they produce; but the natural tendency will be to depravation of moral tone and principle. The material of pure theology is religious truth, losing which the light becomes darkness, and pious emotion degenerates into morbid sentiment, or fanatical superstition, from which infidelity and impiety arc the frequent rebound. Of all Christian doctrines, none holds a more central relation to the rest, or has a more practical bearing on the character and conduct of men than that of the atonement. And first, it is argued that the Atonement is merely a superfluous means for the forgiveness of sins, which God is always ready to forgive simply on the sinner's own confession and amendment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Atonement: In Its Relations to the Covenant, the Priesthood, the Intercession of Our Lord This volume, it will be obvious, does not profess to be a systematic treatise on the great Doctrine of the Atonement. For that reason, I would have been glad to give it the unpretending title, Papers on the Atone ment; and I was anxious to have done so. But it was represented to me, by a friend in whose judgment I have confidence, that such a designation would con vey the impression that the following discussions are miscellaneous and fragmentary, - which a glance at the Table 'of Contents will show is far from being the case. Hence I have qualified the general title, the atonement, by the supplementary clause, In its re lotions to the Covenant, the Priesthood, the Intercession of our Lord. And this indicates pretty exactly the real scepe of the volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Atonement Tms object of the Oxford Library of Practical Theology is to supply some carefully considered teaching on matters of Religion to that large body of devout laymen, who desire instruction, but are not attracted by the learned treatises which appeal to the theologian. One of the needs of the time would seem to be, to trans late the solid theological learning, of which there is no lack, into the vernacular of everyday practical religion and while steering a course between what is called plain teaching on the one hand and erudition on the other, to supply some sound and readable instruction to those who require it, on the subjects included under the common title The Christian Religion, ' that they may be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh them a reason of the hope that is in them, with meekness and fear. Book The Doctrine of the Atonement

Download or read book The Doctrine of the Atonement written by George Smeaton and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrine of the Atonement: As Taught by the Apostles; On the Sayings of the Apostles Exegetically Expounded, With Historical Appendix This volume, delayed by other engagements much beyond my anticipations, is the sequel of the volume which appeared in 1868 on the sayings of Jesus in reference to the atonement, and completes my undertaking; the object of which was to exhibit the entire New Testament teaching on the nature and fruits of Christ's death. I started with the conviction that we cannot attain a full view of the New Testament doctrine on the subject, except in a biblico-historical way; and have abstained from the artificial construction to which systematic theology has recourse, as well as from merely subjective combinations. The work is rather biblical than formally dogmatic or polemical, and intended to embody positive truth according to the setting in which the doctrine is placed in the apostolic documents. The doctrine of the atonement being a matter of pure revelation, all our information as to its nature must be drawn simply from the Scriptures; and the sole inquiry for us is, in what, according to the Lord and His apostles, does the historic fact of the atonement objectively consist, and what are its constituent elements? The object steadily kept in view has been to determine what saith the Scripture - according to rigid principles of grammatico-historical interpretation - without dislocating or wresting, so far as I am aware, a single expression from its true significance, and thus to run up the matter to authority. Then only do we listen to the word of God, and not to the speculations or wisdom of men. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
