Book excerpt: Within the engineering discipline, creativity and innovation are important tools for solving emerging problems. This creativity is needed because societal problems are constantly evolving such as resource depletion, clean water, and food insecurities. Innovative solutions are said to lie on a continuum from incremental, where a designer adapts or builds on previous solutions, to radical innovation, where designers produce ideas that are paradigm-shifting in that they are drastically different from existing solutions. While both types of innovation are often met with uneasiness by engineers, radical innovations are often the most difficult for engineers to develop and support through design decision-making. This is problematic because these are also the types of ideas needed to move the needle on these grand societal challenges. Several potential factors may limit engineers' radical idea development. For example, engineers have been found to be risk averse, which may limit their willingness to support these ideas throughout the design process. Team composition of individual attributes can also influence decision-making outcomes. This is especially important since teamwork has been widely integrated throughout both engineering education and industry. Finally, environmental factors can also influence student creative decision-making, which is problematic from an educational standpoint because research has shown that engineering curriculums rarely value creativity or teach healthy risk-taking. As such, it is important to note that not all radical ideas are good ideas. Four types of decisions can be made on these types of radical solutions: (1) select a radical idea that has a high potential for future success (hit), (2) not selecting a radical idea that has high potential for future success (miss, Type I error), (3) selecting a radical idea that has little potential for future success (false alarm, Type II error), (4) not selecting a radical idea that has little potential for future success (correct rejection. However, how individual and team factors affect the accuracy of decision-making for radical ideas has yet to be investigated. In addition, it is also not yet known if the current engineering education setup, in terms of the course level, curriculum, and instructor is successful in establishing an environment that promotes creativity and innovation. This environment is essential in influencing creative outputs such as their accuracy in decision-making towards radical innovation. Given this, the goal of this dissertation was to develop a theoretical framework for the impact of individual, team, and educational environments on the effectiveness of creative risk-taking behavior in engineering education. More specifically, the dissertation seeks to address the following goals: (1) investigate the impact of preferences for the creativity of an evaluator on the effectiveness of decision-making; (2) identify if personality and preferences for the creativity of team members influence team-level decision making in terms of the effectiveness of decision making in simulated engineering student teams; (3) determine the role of course level, curriculum, and instructor on influencing student perception of creative climate. The results from this dissertation will contribute to the theoretical understanding of engineering students' creative risk-taking behavior at multiple levels and will provide support for future work aimed at modifying engineering classrooms to foster creativity and innovation.

The CEDA is different from other general creativity measures as it demonstrates discriminant validity with the Creative Personality Scale, Creative Temperament Scale, and the Cognitive Risk Tolerance Scale, and has demonstrated convergent validity with the Purdue Creativity Test and the Purdue Spatial Visualization Test- Rotations. It focuses on engineering specific measures, measuring engineering creativity and spatial skills. The aim of this book is to disseminate the CEDA tool for use in engineering educational programs, industry, NASA and the military. Creative Engineering Design Assessment (CEDA) Background, Directions, Manual, Scoring Guide and Uses discusses and outlines the need for creativity in our global economy and in engineering design and provides the CEDA tool in effort to achieve this.

Book excerpt: There is a growing need for companies to generate innovative solutions and products in order to stay competitive in todays constantly shifting engineering and technology landscape. Rapid changes in customer needs, emerging technologies, and new market opportunities demand quick and effective product design processes that can provide a competitive advantage. The focus on improving the effectiveness of the design process has led to renewed attention on studying and improving creativity training in engineering education. Since creative solutions contribute the most value to the design process, design educators are recognizing that students graduating engineering programs need to be trained for creativity prior to entering the workforce. While a large focus of creativity training in engineering education has been on helping students develop creative ideas, researchers have argued that the availability of creative ideas is a necessary but insufficient condition for innovation. This is because creative ideas are often filtered out during the design process because of peoples inadvertent bias against creativity. In other words, concept selection can now be seen as the gatekeeper of creativity. In addition, informal selection methods, often used in engineering industry, are subject to decision-making biases such as ownership bias and risk aversion. However, few studies have explored the impact of these factors on creative concept selection in engineering design education leaving it unclear exactly how these factors impact the design training of the next generation of design engineers. Therefore, the objective of this dissertation was to develop a theoretical understanding of the individual factors that impact creative concept selection processes in engineering design education. This was achieved through empirical studies with 427 engineering design students, spanning 3 research objectives: (1) an exploration of the decision-making process in informal student team concept selection practices, (2) a detailed investigation of the cognitive biases and personal attributes that influence team decision-making and creativity, and (3) identification of the underlying constructs that influence individual preferences for creative concepts and its influence on engineering student behavior. The results of this research contribute fundamental knowledge on the factors and elements that constitute preference for creativity in engineering student decision-making, allowing researchers to develop tools and methods that encourage creativity, improve innovation effectiveness, and increase the competitive advantage of the design process.

I was in the first grade, I believe, when the ideas that eventually developed into this social psychology of creativity first began to germinate. The occasion was art class, a weekly Friday afternoon event during which we were given small reproductions of the great masterworks and asked to copy them on notepaper using the standard set of eight Crayola® crayons. I had left kindergarten the year before with encour agement from the teacher about developing my potential for artistic creativity. During these Friday afternoon exercises, however, I developed nothing but frus tration. Somehow, Da Vinci's "Adoration of the Magi" looked wrong after I'd fin ished with it. I wondered where that promised creativity had gone. I began to believe then that the restrictions placed on my artistic endeavors contributed to my loss of interest and spontaneity in art. When, as a social psy chologist, I began to study intrinsic motivation, it seemed to me that this moti vation to do something for its own sake was the ingredient that had been missing in those strictly regimented art classes. It seemed that intrinsic motivation, as defined by social psychologists, might be essential to creativity. My research pro gram since then has given considerable support to that notion. As a result, the social psychology of creativity presented in this book gives prominence to social variables that affect motivational orientation.
