Book excerpt: A comparison was made of sudden ionospheric disturbances (SIDs) reported in IER-FB Solar-Geophysical Data and SIDs detected at Boulder, Colorado, by project HANDS in February 1967. The FB reports were collected from single experiments. One of the main problems in the comparison was the relatively large spread in the times of SIDs reported to FB, and factors contributing to this spread in time are discussed. Some advantages in the collocated experiment system are shown to be 1) considerably reduced spread in starting times of SID signatures, 2) high detection sensitivity due to the ability to identify small but simultaneous perturbations in parallel data channels, 3) high level of confidence of SID observed in three or more data channels. Based on these findings, a suggestion is made for improving the SID detection and reporting through the addition of a uniform set of phase coherent equipment at three or more stations spaced around the earth to provide continuous SID monitoring.

But it has many applications, and it is about time that a book is being devoted to this fascinating subject. Our own involvement with infrasound occurred as graduate students of Prof. William Donn, who had established an infrasound array at the Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory (now the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory) of Columbia University. It was a natural outgrowth of another major activity at Lamont, using seismic waves to explore the Earth’s interior. Both the atmosphere and the solid Earth feature velocity (seismic or acoustic) gradients in the vertical which act to refract the respective waves. The refraction in turn allows one to calculate the respective background structure in these mediums, indirectly exploring locations that are hard to observe otherwise. Monitoring these signals also allows one to discover various phenomena, both natural and man-made (some of which have military applications).

Book excerpt: The research of this thesis addresses the detection and characterization of ionospheric waves and its application to traveling ionospheric disturbances (TIDs) induced by the natural events, such as earthquakes and tsunamis. The characterization is done from regional detrended Vertical Total Electron Content (VTEC) maps which are obtained from a set of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) satellites. Note that from the mathematical and signal-processing point of view, the problem presents two key difficulties that are (a) the fact that ionospheric sampling is nonuniform, with different density of samples that somehow reflect the distribution of stations over the earth surface, and (b), that the estimation method can not introduce any constraints in the number of disturbances and their propagation parameters. In the first contribution of the thesis, we propose a method for detecting the number of simultaneous TIDs from a time series of high-pass-filtered VTEC maps and their parameters. The method, which we refer to as the Atomic Decomposition Detector of TIDs (A31TID), is tested on the detrended VTEC map corresponding to a simulated realistic scenario from the dense GNSS network, Global Positioning System Earth Observation Network (GEONET) in Japan. The contribution consists of the detection of the exact number of independent TIDs from a nonuniform sampling of the ionospheric pierce points. The solution to the problem is set as the estimation of the representative perturbations from a dictionary of atoms that span a linear space of possible TIDs by means of a variation of the LASSO algorithm. These atoms consist of plane waves characterized by a wavelength, direction, and phase on a surface defined, the part of the ionosphere sounded by the GNSS observation. As the second contribution, we apply A31TID on actual VTEC data to the GEONET network. We have studied the Medium Scale TIDs (MSTIDs) during the Spring Equinox day of 21 March 2011. The geophysical contribution is: (a) detection of circular MSTID waves compatible by time and center with a specific earthquake; (b) simultaneous superposition of two distinct MSTIDs, with almost the same azimuth; and (c) the presence of nighttime MSTIDs with velocities in the range 400-600 m/s. In the third contribution we provide a detailed characterization of the TIDs originated from the total solar eclipse of 21 August 2017, the shadow of which crossed the United States from the Pacific to the Atlantic ocean. This can be modeled in part as if the umbra and penumbra were moving cylinders that intersects with variable elevation angle a curved surface. The result of this is reflected in the time evolution of the TID wavelengths produced by the eclipse, which depend on the vertical angle of the sun with the surface of the earth, and also a double bow wave phenomenon, where the bow waves are generated in advance to the umbra. Finally, we detected a clear pattern of MSTIDs, which appeared in advance of the penumbra, which we could hypothesize as soliton waves associated with the bow wave. In the fourth contribution we characterized the MSTIDs generated during the Japan Tohoku earthquake of 11 March 2011. We found: (a) a confirmation of the performance of the algorithm in face of simultaneous multi-TID, the robustness to the curvature of the wave fronts of the perturbations and the accuracy of the estimated parameters. The results were double checked by the additional visual inspection from VTEC maps and keogram plots; (b) The detection of different wave fronts between the west and east MSTIDs around the epicenter, consistent in time and space with the post-earthquake tsunami; (c) The complete evolution of the circular MSTIDs driven by the tsunami during the GNSS observable area; (d) The detection of the fast and short circular TIDs related to the acoustic waves of earthquake.

Book excerpt: After the discovery of the conducting layer in 1925, ionospheric sounders have been the most important tool to study the ionosphere. A dense network of ionosondes has been used to provide information on ionospheric conditions across the world, and HF radars have been used to obtain detailed information on ionospheric phenomena. However, there is still a significant lack of understanding of the time and spatial structure of the ionospheric plasma instabilities. Due to their high temporal resolution, some of the ionospheric events can be observed only with radar, which because of the relatively fewer radars in comparison to ionsondes, causes the events to be significantly under reported. Conventional radar systems are built with application-specific integrated circuits and dedicated hardware, both of which offer limited operational flexibility and are difficult to reconfigure. The new concept of software-defined-radar (SDR) brings versatility to radar systems because pulse generation, up-conversion, and down-conversion are implemented by means of software. In this dissertation, a novel design and implementation of a software-defined high frequency ionospheric radar, Penn State Ionospheric Radar Imager (PIRI), is described. Furthermore, preliminary results of unique ionospheric phenomenon detected by the system is presented. PIRI is designed to be a modest, low-cost, and low-power (600 W) radar system which is composed of commercial-off-the-shelf products and open-source software. It is designed to be mobile as it can easily be deployed at temporary locations to study local ionospheric disturbances. The software defined implementation of the radar allows the system to cover the entire HF band while reusing its core components. The PIRI HF radar system has been deployed in two locations. The first was used in Rock Springs, PA near Penn State, University Park campus. This location has been used for developing and testing. The other is in Arecibo, Puerto Rico near the Arecibo Observatory. It was deployed in March 2017 as a complementary instrument for an HF heating campaign. Observations from both locations under natural and artificially modified ionosphere include events such as sporadic-E, mid-latitude spread-F, and artificial spread-F. It is shown that a low-cost HF radar like PIRI can provide original and insightful results from both naturally and artificially occurring ionospheric disturbances with very high temporal resolution that an ionosonde cannot provide.
