Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The incidence of Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) coverage in Idaho secondary schools is below the national level of 35% (Lyznicki, Riggs, and Champion, 1999). The greatest concentration of ATCs employed in Idaho secondary schools is in higher populated schools, although 75% of schools in the state of Idaho at the time of this study had student populations of less than 750. This notable lack of coverage in smaller schools is a distinct disadvantage for student-athletes. Overall, secondary school sports health care must increase for smaller populated schools. Regarding ATCs who are currently employed, the athletics/activities directors' perceptions of ATCs' roles and responsibilities revealed they expect ATCs to spend more time completing activities outside the Role Delineation Study domains, and these duties were perceived as important by athletics/activities directors. Athletic directors must be cognizant of the roles and responsibilities of ATCs in the secondary school setting as outlined by the NATABOC. Furthermore, this study suggests way to increase ATC incidence and optimize sports health care coverage in the secondary school setting.

Book Assessing Coach and Athletic Director Responsibility for the Social Mission of High School Sport

Download or read book Assessing Coach and Athletic Director Responsibility for the Social Mission of High School Sport written by Kylee J. Ault-Baker and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High school sport has often been considered a viable context for promoting youth development of life skills and character (Turgeon et al., 2019). So much so that key stakeholders, including coaches and athletic directors, have been charged with meeting the mission statements of these education-based sport programs (Camire et al., 2009). However, despite a focus on promotion of psychosocial development in the very definition of education-based athletics (Blanton et al., 2021), coach and athletic director perceptions of their responsibility for fulfilling this 'social mission' of student-athlete psychosocial development has not been explored. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to answer the following research questions: (1) How do coaches and athletic directors perceive their responsibility for the social mission of high school sport and student athletic success, and (2) what job characteristics predict perceptions of responsibility for the social mission of high school sport and student athletic success? This study used a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design with stratified sampling of 191 coaches and 112 athletic directors spanning all four divisions in Michigan. Responsibility and predictors of responsibility such as skill variety, task identity, task significance, autonomy, feedback from the job, feedback from agents, and working with others were measured using the Job Diagnostic Survey (Hackman & Oldham, 1975), and explanatory follow-up focus group interviews were conducted (Creswell & Plano-Clark, 2018).Results from Research Question 1 indicate that coaches perceive the same amount of responsibility for both the social mission and the athletic success of student-athletes. Athletic directors perceive more responsibility for the social mission than they do for promoting athletic success, although coaches had higher levels of perceived responsibility for the social mission than the athletic directors. In the follow up focus groups the coaches indicated feelings of perceived definitive responsibility for the social mission, as well as some level of nuanced responsibility when recognizing that others also may share the responsibility for student-athlete psychosocial development. Coaches also commented on the balance of responsibility between promoting athlete life skills development while fostering athletic success. Athletic directors discussed a perceived definitive responsibility for the social mission, with their conversations highlighting that nuanced responsibility includes the multitude of other duties assigned to their jobs. Specific to the athletic director group was the mentioning of accountability and evaluation as an obvious, and mostly unwanted, next step from assuming responsibility for student-athlete psychosocial development. Results of Research Question 2 revealed that status as an educator, task identity and task significance significantly predicted coaches' level of responsibility for fulfilling the social mission of high school sport. In follow-up focus groups, the coaches discussed task identity, feedback, motivation for joining the profession, time demands of the job, and external support as important influences on responsibility. In the athletic director sample, task identity and feedback from the job significantly predicted athletic directors' responsibility for fulfilling the social mission. In follow-up focus groups, athletic directors emphasized task identity, feedback, administrator responsibility for the perception of the school, motivation for joining the profession, and demands of the job as important influences the responsibility for the social mission of education-based athletics. The current study provides foundational data on the responsibility of coaches and athletic directors for future lines of research.

Book Athletic Training

Download or read book Athletic Training written by Kevin F. Rooney and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Athletic trainers work in clinical settings such as secondary schools, colleges and universities, sports medicine clinics, professional sports, hospitals, and other healthcare environments. However, with the rapid expansion of athletic training education programs (ATEP) over the years, another role for the athletic trainer has developed, the athletic trainer educator. Consequently, it is currently becoming increasingly apparent that athletic trainers must also be equipped with the knowledge and expertise to teach, mentor, and train the future generations of certified athletic trainers within the classroom. Recently, researchers (Hertel et al., 2001; Craig, 2006; Rich, 2009) have argued that athletic training instructors lack the necessary pedagogical knowledge to be more effective instructors. However, athletic training education is a unique environment that provides both a wealth of content knowledge and many opportunities for students and professionals to engage in inquiry, action, interaction, mentoring, and reflection. Does the athletic training environment provide informal opportunities for students and instructors to gain pedagogical expertise? To learn more about instructors' preparation for teaching, this dissertation explored athletic training instructors perceived preparedness for teaching in an ATEP. This study used a mixed methods research approach through a self-developed and pre-piloted electronic questionnaire. The approach consisted of collecting and analyzing scalable quantitative and qualitative data as well as written narrative qualitative responses from 364 participants currently teaching within an ATEP. In addition, quantitative data was collected from ATEP program directors regarding their perceptions of pedagogy on instructor preparation and its place within athletic training (AT) education. Through the study's findings, it became evident that instructors' perceived preparedness for teaching is explained by several theories of learning, such as the mentor/protege model of learning, experiential learning theory, and social learning theory. Demonstrated by their actions, attitudes, and beliefs, participants placed high value on pedagogy, its importance on effective teaching, and its place within AT education. Furthermore, from within athletic training's unique clinical field and classroom settings, participants demonstrated how each environment provided them with their perceived foundations for teaching within an ATEP. Despite these findings, formal pedagogical preparation and its place within athletic training curricula needs further exploration. -- Abstract.

Book Perceptions of Role Strain in Dually Appointed Certified Athletic Trainers

Download or read book Perceptions of Role Strain in Dually Appointed Certified Athletic Trainers written by Corey M. Hannah and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this exploratory study was to examine the perceived role strain reported by dual appointment athletic training faculty regarding balancing teaching, scholarship, and service responsibilities. It is particularly important to understand role complexities and associated role strain among the major role groups within the athletic training profession: clinicians, faculty, and dual (joint) appointees. Role complexity is an all-inclusive term used to represent stress, negative beliefs, feelings, and behaviors of role occupants (Henning & Weidner, 2008). The most common types of role complexity are discussed and examined throughout the study. These include: role conflict, role ambiguity, role overload, role incongruity, and role incompetence. Goode's (1960) long-standing theory of role strain provided a conceptual framework for this study. The theory suggests that, in general, people want to fulfill all of the expectations placed upon them. Research questions addressing each aspect of Goode's theory were developed and from them an interview guide was designed. Data gathered during individual interviews with twelve athletic trainers was transcribed and sorted into emergent categories using open coding (Creswell, 2005). The findings were organized and presented according to the study's research questions. Time strain, unrealistic expectations, and unsustainable workloads were the most common causes of role strain reported by the dually appointed ATC's. Strategies of work/life balance, understanding of contractual obligations, and faculty mentorship were reported as means to decrease role strain. The study's conclusions, reported in the final chapter, are accompanied by a series of recommendations for alleviating role strain among dually appointed ATC's, as well as recommendations for future research.

Book Athletic Directors Perceptions Regarding the Impact of Sport Specialization on High School Student athletes

Download or read book Athletic Directors Perceptions Regarding the Impact of Sport Specialization on High School Student athletes written by Branden M. Lippy and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative research study explored public and non-public high school athletic directors' perception regarding the impact of sport specialization on high school student-athletes. This study was conducted with 30 high schools across the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association's District III region. Results were gathered by using an online survey, interviews, and a review of athletic department coaching handbooks, mission statements, and any school board policies relating to sport specialization, sharing of student-athletes, sharing of facilities, and multiple-sport participation. Thirty athletic directors completed the survey and seven were then interviewed. The results from this study indicated that the majority of athletic directors perceived the disadvantages of sport specialization exceeded the advantages for high school student-athletes. While most athletic directors agreed that there is some necessity to specialize to increase skill ability, most also agreed that specializing in one sport provides a greater negative impact than positive impact on high school student-athletes. Athletic directors perceived several factors as critical components in a student-athlete's decision to specialize: opportunities for student-athletes to participate in sports outside of their school district (travel and club teams); pressure from coaches and parents/guardians; the fear of not making a team; and student-athletes' and parents/guardians' belief that specialization helps to obtain a college scholarship. An overwhelming number of participants agreed that playing multiple sports is an important aspect of the high school student-athlete experience; that central administration supports multiple sport athletes; and that they do not encourage student-athletes to specialize during childhood/adolescence.

Book Perceptions and Advising Practices of School Counselors in the Secondary School Setting with Students Interested in Athletic Training

Download or read book Perceptions and Advising Practices of School Counselors in the Secondary School Setting with Students Interested in Athletic Training written by Elisabeth C. Macrum and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT:The present study was designed to examine the perceptions of athletic training and advising practices during career guidance with students interested in athletic health care. The researcher used qualitative methodology collecting data through surveys with school counselors and athletic training students, as well as interviews with school counselors. Interview transcripts and survey responses were analyzed inductively using open and axial coding to establish categories and relationships; and the constant comparative method was used to analyze data. Interview groups were formed using a typological approach to form groups of school counselors with highly and less accurate perceptions of athletic training. School counselors accurately described attributes of the successful athletic training student and certified athletic trainer as well as accurate roles and responsibilities of the certified athletic trainer. Athletic training students felt negatively about the career advising process experience with school counselors. School counselors used a variety of sequential strategies used in career guidance forming a divergent discovery model for the guidance to careers and post-secondary school opportunities.
