Book excerpt: In today's financial world, microfinance has emerged as a significant tool to address rampant and pervasive poverty. It represents a revolutionary idea, aiming to serve the poorest of the poor, who are typically considered unviable candidates for business loans. Microfinance has been gaining greater importance globally, with India, being a demographically diverse country, witnessing its multifaceted impact, leading to the evolution of various microfinancing delivery models. The increasing significance of microfinance has inspired economists and academicians to study its role and impact in poverty alleviation, financial inclusion, employment generation, women's empowerment, and entrepreneurial development. However, most studies have focused on district or state levels, with national-level research primarily concentrating on the contribution of commercial banks in microfinancing. This has left a research gap regarding the various delivery channels of microfinance and their nationwide status. The present study represents a modest attempt to comprehensively analyze the delivery models of microfinance in India, with special reference to the role of the National Credit Fund for Women, also known as Rastriya Mahila Kosh (RMK). RMK is a registered society operating under the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India, established in 1993 with the initiation of the Self Help Group (SHG) movement in India. Despite its significance, there is limited literature available regarding the working, growth, and role of RMK in microfinancing. The primary objective of this study is to analyze the geographical distribution patterns of microfinance under different delivery models and identify any disparities present within them. The study also aims to analyze the trends and status of microfinance extended by RMK. This research study is divided into six chapters. The first chapter contains the introduction and research methodology. The second chapter provides insights into the main players in the delivery channels of microfinance, namely, Self Help Groups (SHGs) and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs). The third chapter analyzes the nationwide status of the microfinance delivery system in India. The fourth chapter offers an overview of the objectives, functions, and loan operations of RMK. The fifth chapter comprises the analysis of geographical dispersion and the performance of RMK's loan operations. Finally, the sixth chapter summarizes the findings of the study. This research work focuses on the prevailing delivery systems in India, namely, the SHG-Bank Linkage Model (SHG-BLP) and the Microfinance Institution Model (MFI Model). The total credit extended by both models amounted to 1 lakh crore as of March 31, 2018, covering more than 11 crores households, with 95% of beneficiaries being women. The study of geographical distribution of both delivery models revealed disparities in credit distribution. Region-wise analysis of the SHG-BLP Model showed that the Southern Region of the country accounted for a significant share of 80% of total credit sanctioned in the year 2017-18. Total loans disbursed to the Southern Region amounted to Rs. 31023.32 crore, out of the total of Rs. 38781.15 crore for the entire country. The top five states with the highest number of SHGs credit-linked with banks were Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal, with the first four belonging to the Southern Region. Savings and outstanding loans in the regions exhibited a similar pattern.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of this study was to determine the effect of MFIs on the growth of SMEs in Kiambu County. The study was guided by the following research objectives: To determine the effect of MFIs on the growth of SMEs capital, to examine the effect of MFIs on the growth of SMEs human resource and to investigate ways of how MFIs can improve their financial assistance towards SMEs growth. This research adopted a descriptive research design. A descriptive research design is a scientific method which involves observing and describing the behaviour of a subject without influencing it in any way. The research population consisted of 25,000 registered Kiambu SMEs. In this study, the sampling frame constituted of SMES entrepreneurs and the information was obtained from the Kiambu County Authorities. The sampling techniques included the purposive sampling method in the determination of SMEs to be included in the study. Using a confidence level of 95% and a total population of 25,000 SMEs the sample size was 393. The data collection techniques that were employed for the research include the use of structured questionnaires. The respondents were requested for their time prior to sending the actual questionnaire. A pilot test involving 5 respondents was carried out to evaluate the completeness, precision, accuracy and clarity of the questionnaires. In this study, the descriptive statistics such as percentages and frequency distribution will be used to analyze the demographic profile of the participants. The demographic data will be tabulated using frequency and percentages. In order to describe the data, the study used means of each variable. The study established that savings remains the most important source of finance throughout the business cycle. The MFIs play a smaller role in economic empowerment of SMEs in Kiambu County, as most of the respondents, depended on village loans, self help groups (SHG) and from family members in generating their business start up capital. SHGs can also promote savings and yield moderate economic benefits that reduce the dependence on moneylenders. Access to finance has been identified as a key element for small scale enterprises to succeed in their drive to build productive capacity, to compete, to create jobs and to contribute to poverty alleviation in the county. Without finance, small scale enterprises cannot grow or compete in the turbulent business environment. MFIs play a small role on the growth of human capital. From the findings, MFIs also play a small role in making the labour force to be more productive. A small proportion of the respondents agreed that there were a number of MFIs offering business training to small and medium scale entrepreneurs in Kiambu County. It was also found that MFIs do not play any significant role in offering training in business skills. Any government interested in the development of their economy should be involved in the provision of good regulations for business growth. Making credit available to SMEs and at an affordable rate is a means to empower them. MFIs should deal with trust worthy Self Help Groups. MFIs should increase the grace period of loan repayment among SMEs. MFIs should collaborate with other MFIs in assisting SMEs and sensitization of SME business management in giving clients information about new loans, saving procedures and any other new products from the MFIs. The study concludes that MFIs have a small impact on the growth of SMEs as savings remains the most important source of finance throughout the business cycle. MFI plays a small role on the growth of human capital. The Kenyan government has failed to safe guard the property of the SMEs. The study recommends that MFIs should come up with innovative ways to finance SMEs for successful growth. MFI should play a critical role on the growth of human capital. The government should be involved in business growth. MFIs should assist SMEs in marketing of the business products, making credit available to SMEs at an affordable rate.

Book Evaluation of Microfinance Institutions in Varanasi with Special Reference to Client Education

Download or read book Evaluation of Microfinance Institutions in Varanasi with Special Reference to Client Education written by Vinita Kalra and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-21 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last two decades, microfinance has gained growing recognition as an effective tool for improving the quality of life and the living standard of poor and low-income people. Microfinance’s popularity reached a peak when the United Nations declared 2005 the ‘International Year of Microcredit’ and when, one year later, the author of ‘Banker to the Poor’, Muhammad Yunus, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. This recognition has given rise to a movement that was supposed to accomplish social and financial goals simultaneously and without any friction. However, microfinance as an industry was shaken for the first time in 2008, as a consequence of the international financial crisis, and it again suffered problems more recently. It was reported that the populist moves by politicians led to a mass default of loans, of worth more than US$1.5 billion in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, the biggest market for the microfinance institutions in India. Measures taken to ensure that the 2008 crisis and its consequences are not repeated include bringing clients’ protection principles to work and building client awareness in order to make informed decisions. This book focuses on the efficacy of ‘financial education’ as a tool towards attaining client protection. It also utilizes the Microfinance Clients Awareness Index to evaluate the factors that impact the level of financial awareness for microfinance clients.

Book excerpt: Microfinance, as a concept, involves providing financial services, particularly small credit, fund transfer, and insurance to the unemployed, low-income group, and those who do not have easy access to the banking system. It has emerged as an active agent of financial inclusion, ensuring economic, and social upliftment of the unprivileged. Microfinance is being operated through two channels Self-help Group-Bank Linkage Programme (SBLP) and Micro-finance Institutions (MFIs). The special characteristic of SBLP is its direct connection with the clients at the grass-root level and working towards poverty reduction by providing financial support. The paper is based on a field study on SBLP undertaken for women in the Varanasi District of Uttar Pradesh, India. The increase in women’s participation in economic activities and decision-making reveals that SHGs have made an impact. SHGs have also helped them to create a common platform to participate, discuss, and find a solution of their problems. Women’s income and occupation structure under SHGs have also influenced the standard of living and empowerment level significantly.

Book Role of Microfinance Institutions in Social Development

Download or read book Role of Microfinance Institutions in Social Development written by Srirang Jha and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microfinance institutions (MFIs) work towards financial inclusion, livelihood sustainability through micro-enterprises and social development to empower the marginalized sections of communities across the globe. This paper is a modest effort to understand the unique role of MFIs in social development especially in Indian context. Although providing financial services is the primary goal of MFIs, these small institutions have tried to make a big difference in the lives of the poor by various interventions revolving around social development of marginalized sections. MFIs in India have been involved in capacity building, financial literacy, livelihood promotion, preventive healthcare, education and training, water and sanitation, etc. The paper provides a comprehensive review of some of the interventions triggered by MFIs in India so as to empower the people living on the fringes without any hope of redemption. Besides, the paper also emphasises the need for providing financial incentives to the MFIs engaged in social development of the poor by the state agencies as well as large banks which are supporting these institutions. Financial inclusion alone cannot empower the poor. It is important that the MFIs expand their social development interventions in terms of reach, quality, and overall impact on the people who are living on the margins.
