Book excerpt: The most widely published feature of Kudumbasree is the setting up of micro enterprises using local resources as well as skills. Micro enterprise development is viewed as an opportunity for providing gainful employment to the people below poverty line and thereby improving their income and living standards. Micro finance in India started in the early 1980s with small efforts or forming informal SHG to provide access to much needed saving and credit services to the marginal population more importantly in rural areas. National bodies like the Small Industrial development Bank of India (SIBI) and NABARD are devoting significant time and financial resource to micro finance sector. The main objectives of this study 1) to identify important applications of micro finance among members in Kudumbasree, 2) to find out whether micro finance influences economic development of women, 3) to get insight about micro finance activities. A well-structured questionnaire was prepared to collect primary data. The questionnaire for this study was developed partly on the basis of existing literature and partly from the opinion of experts in the field by keeping in mind the scope and objectives of the study. Through this study an attempt has been made to analyse the working system of NHG of Purappuzha panchayath. Kudumbasree unit has created an innovative method of mobilising rural savings that eventually helped for providing credit. The members admitted that their socio-economic status improved after joining this unit. NHG unit has brought the national and international recognition as an ideal and workable model of participatory development for eradicating poverty.

India has witnessed innovations in financial options for Micro Finance Institutions (MFI), the addition of new products and services, such as insurance and pension schemes, and the entry of Internet kiosks to rural villages. It has been a recognised fact that microcredit is the most effective instrument of dealing with two crucial social issues, ie, poverty alleviation and women empowerment. The experience of microfinance concept is underlined the fact that it is an apt tool to empower the rural women economically, psychologically and socially. It is hoped to enhance the scope of empowerment of women, which has already found its way in the academic discourse on social welfare schemes and effective rural credit delivery mechanism. This will definitely pave the way for distinctively evolving a solution for Indian way of financing and women capability improvement in terms of the vision of Indian born Nobel laureate for Economics, Dr. Amartya Sen. This will also help us in evolving a societal friendly way of financing in developing the economy by improving the quality of life, living standards, to alleviate poverty, inequality, other developmental and gender issues. It will stimulate the women's imagination about a better world with less injustice and inequalities. Every social experiment or endeavor has inherent in it the potential for both success and failure. But if the experiment is in the right direction, the, failure becomes a stepping-stone to success. The pioneer in this experiment with the micro finance and women empowerment can take the first step or one step at a time, and this becomes the foundation of the ultimate success.

Book excerpt: India is a home to the largest population of poor in the world and out of its total population there are nearly 75 million poor house-holds in India, thus it has become the prime obligation of the regulators to provide some definite solution for poverty alleviation. Microfinance has several other developmental objectives like mobilization of savings. It has also been used as inducers in different community development activities as an entry point in the community organizing program and as an ingredient in a larger education or training exercise. For this study, population consist of clients of micro financing institutions in Changanacherry Taluk. In this study for the purpose of primary data collection, samples were selected by using random sampling technique. Sample size for the study conducted is 100 respondents of micro financing institutions. The study consists of both primary and secondary data. Primary data were collected through questionnaire. The role of Micro Financing Institutions in economic empowerment with special reference to Changanacherry taluk was examined. Key challenges facing MFIs today that are affecting their impact on poverty alleviation were seem to be an over-emphasis on financial sustainability over social objectives, and a failure of many MFIs to work with the poorest in society. Overall, Micro financing institutions has provided important contributions to the development world. It was found that savings are vital and perhaps more important to people, that they are probably better served by direct subsidies rather than loans. Although micro financing institutions offer financial assistance to the society and prove itself a useful tool in economic empowerment.

Book Microfinance and Micro enterprises

Download or read book Microfinance and Micro enterprises written by Louis-Olivier Gervais and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The poverty eradication mission called Kudumbashree is a women-centered anti-poverty program initiated in 1998 by the Government of Kerala, in India. Based on a primary survey of neighborhood groups in two communities, the study examines the dynamics of high repayment rates and the social impact of this micro-enterprise program. The study found that repayment rates are relatively lower in non-agricultural activities because of the marketing problems (resulting from the creation of non-tradables), while it is relatively successful in the agricultural sector. High repayment rates are found to be propelled by dynamic incentives like subsidies and the prospect of loan renewal. Finally, the study found that borrowers did considerable double-dipping (borrowing from other microfinance programs) and borrowed from non-institutional sources. This raises questions about their real indebtedness. Kudumbashree's real impact could be found in its social capital impact. It creates considerable social interactions among the poor and facilitates women's empowerment. Peer monitoring and peer mentoring interactions among the members of the group create positive externalities - a common knowledge pool and social safety nets. It is able to leverage these externalities with local governments, which enables women to exert influence in their communities' political power structures.

Book Microfinance Poverty Alleviation and Financial Inclusion of the Poor

Download or read book Microfinance Poverty Alleviation and Financial Inclusion of the Poor written by Naveen Kolloju and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having understood the necessity of poverty alleviation alongside financial inclusion through microfinance intervention, this book makes an attempt to fill the knowledge gap in relation to the potential synergies among microfinance, poverty alleviation and financial inclusion. As a part of empirical study, it examines the correlation between poverty alleviation and financial inclusion by thoroughly analyzing the key microfinance models such as SHG-Bank Linkage Program (SBLP) model, Microfinance Institutions (MFI) model and Business Correspondent (BC) Model; and offers some interesting observations, which are quite relevant in the present policy context. It also makes an effort to address one of the fundamental questions as to why the poor, especially women are unabatedly depending upon MFIs, despite the successful functioning of SBLP model in fulfilling the same objective. This book is a reminder of the fact that any effort to achieve complete financial inclusion without alleviating poverty is a futile exercise and financial inclusion would be successful only if financial literacy is vigorously promoted along with poverty alleviation schemes and programs.

Book excerpt: Micro finance has a profitable banking opportunity in India with over 50 million poor clients. The transition of micro finance industry from product to client centered is overdue. This transition is accompanied by two clear trends in the industry (i) diversification of microfinance industry and (ii) development of menu of financial products designed to achieve multiple purposes. The scope of spreading micro finance is clearly evident. There is also missing loan size that needs to be supplied by the micro finance institutions. Commercial banks can't reach millions of poor for whom small loans could make huge difference. There are several reasons for this. Most of the poor are rural, and they are much dispersed. They have low education. The main issue that makes difficult for the banks to serve these less educated customers is that they don't have any asset to use as guarantee. Micro financing starts with the assumption that the poor is willing to pay high interest to have access to finance. The repayment rate is above the commercial repayment rates. The cost of operating micro finance institutions is much higher than their traditional commercial counter parts. With this background, our study attempts to understand the ecosystem and the market condition of a village located in southern India to gauge the need for microfinance.
