Book A Study on Performance of Roller Compacted Concrete Pavement in Accelerated Pavement Tests

Download or read book A Study on Performance of Roller Compacted Concrete Pavement in Accelerated Pavement Tests written by Chamroeun Chhorn and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roller-compacted concrete pavement, or RCCP, is well-known for its low cost and fast construction. Through compaction, the friction induced by aggregate interlock provides additional load carry capacity at the beginning of construction. Although its construction procedure is quite different from typical conventional concrete pavement, RCCP consists of the same basic ingredients as conventional concrete pavement. The characteristics of RCCP make it an excellent alternative for port, intermodal, street, and highway applications. Even though this pavement has been used for decades, research on and experiences in its application are still limited, particularly in Korea. In order to evaluate the performance of RCCP, two phases of an accelerated pavement test were conducted. In Phase One, the performance of RCCP at two different strengths (35.6 and 30.4 MPa) is evaluated. In Phase Two, the performance of RCCP with different thicknesses (5, 7.5, and 10 cm) is investigated. The number of load repetitions to fatigue crack occurrence in each section is compared to the estimated fatigue failure determined from the fatigue equation for RCCP. The crack development in each section is compared to the crack model for jointed plain concrete pavement. Overall, it is confirmed that RCCP has equal or better performance compared to the estimation in terms of fatigue cracking.

Download or read book Significant Findings from Full scale Accelerated Pavement Testing written by Wynand JvdM. Steyn and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2012 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 433: Significant Findings from Full-Scale Accelerated Pavement Testing documents and summarizes significant findings from the various experimental activities associated with full-scale accelerated pavement testing (f-sAPT) programs that have taken place between 2000 and 2011. The report also identifies gaps in knowledge related to f-sAPT and where future research may be needed. NCHRP Synthesis 433 is designed to expand the f-sAPT base of knowledge documented in NCHRP Syntheses 325 and 235, both with the same title of Significant Findings from Full-Scale Accelerated Pavement Testing. f-sAPT is the controlled application of a wheel loading, at or above the appropriate legal load limit, to a pavement system to determine pavement response in a compressed time period. The acceleration of damage is achieved by one or more of the following factors: increased repetitions, modified loading conditions, imposed climatic conditions, and thinner pavements with a decreased structural capacity which have shorter design lives"--

Book Accelerated Testing for Studying Pavement Design and Performance FY 2000

Download or read book Accelerated Testing for Studying Pavement Design and Performance FY 2000 written by Hani G. Melhem and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the research was to compare the performance of fiber reinforced and plain Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) overlay when used as a thin non-dowelled overlay on top of a rubblized, distressed concrete pavement. The experiment was conducted at the Accelerated Testing Laboratory at Kansas State University, and consisted of constructing two pavements and subjecting them to full-scale accelerated pavement test. The pavements were constructed in the environmental pit so that heat-cool temperature cycles were imposed. The two pavements were subjected to 500,000 full-truck axle passes. Stresses and strains at several locations in the two pavements, as well as the expansion/contraction of the slabs, were periodically recorded during the test. The stress-strain data, as well as the location, severity and extent of the cracking in the overlay, clearly indicate that there is no benefit of including the plastic fibers in the concrete overlay. The full-scale accelerated test revealed that the thin non-dowelled overlays are effective when used on top of distressed, rubblized concrete pavements.

Book Investigation of Roller Compacted Concrete for Use in Pavements in Virginia

Download or read book Investigation of Roller Compacted Concrete for Use in Pavements in Virginia written by M. Shabbir Hossain and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roller-compacted concrete (RCC) is a stiff mixture of aggregate, cementitious materials, and water with zero slump. RCC is consolidated or compacted in the fresh state by use of a roller with or without vibration. RCC typically is placed with asphalt paving equipment in thicknesses of 4 to 8 in for pavement application. RCC has gained the attention of the paving industry in recent years because of its history of low cost, rapid construction, and durable performance. The Virginia Transportation Research Council conducted this laboratory study to gain familiarity with RCC technology and to develop guidelines for its use in the field. RCC mixtures were successfully produced in the laboratory using locally available materials, and their properties were measured. These mixtures achieved compressive strengths around 5,000 psi in 28 days and had properties similar to those of conventional concrete in terms of compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, modulus of rupture, and splitting tensile strength. A special provision was developed and used in the two field projects. The special provision was subsequently modified based on the field experience and is provided in the Appendix. VDOT should implement the RCC specification developed in this study for regular VDOT use of RCC. Use of RCC should be considered in future field applications, particularly where fast construction of rigid (concrete) pavement is needed; an example of such an area would carry heavily loaded, slow-moving vehicles such as at intersections and access roads to truck or bus parking areas. VDOT should annually monitor the long-term performance of the two constructed RCC projects reviewed in this study over a period of at least 10 years. Evaluations should document joint efficiencies for load transfer (through testing with the falling weight deflectometer), any visual evidence of deterioration of asphalt at joints, and any other general signs of pavement distress that may occur.

Profiles of APT facilities throughout the world are included in an appendix.

Book Accelerated Testing for Studying Pavement Design and Performance FY 2002

Download or read book Accelerated Testing for Studying Pavement Design and Performance FY 2002 written by Hani G. Melham and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Midwest States Accelerated Pavement Testing Pooled Fund Program, financed by the highway departments of Missouri, Iowa, Kansas and Nebraska, has supported an accelerated pavement testing (APT) project to compare the performance of stabilized clayey embankment soil when Portland cement, fly ash, lime and a commercial product were used as stabilizing agents. The project aimed to improve the practices related to the design of flexible pavements when the top of the subgrade is improved by chemical stabilization. The experiments were conducted at the Civil Infrastructure Systems Laboratory (CISL) of Kansas State University. The test program consisted of constructing four flexible pavement structures and subjecting them to full-scale accelerated loading test. The study indicated that cement and lime are the most effective stabilizers for the studied soil. These stabilizers resulted in lower vertical compressive stresses at the top of the subgrade and lower rut depth at the pavement surface than the fly ash-treated soil. After more than two million axle load repetitions, the pavement with cement stabilized embankment soil exhibited much less surface cracking than the pavement with fly-ash stabilized embankment. The commercial product proved not to be effective in stabilizing the non-sulfate clayey soil used in this experiment, when the embankment is constructed at the same moisture content and compaction level as for the other three chemicals. The unconfined compression strength measured on laboratory prepared samples of soil stabilized with the commercial chemical compound was very similar to that of the untreated soil.
