Book excerpt: Quasielastic scattering and deuteron breakup in the 200 MeV region is studied by impinging a pulsed neutron beam on a deuterium target at the Weapons Neutron Research facility at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. The scattered neutrons from the d(n, np)n reaction are detected by a wall of neutron time-of-flight scintillators, and scattered protons are detected by two scintillators and a wire chamber. This setup allows for measurement of the incident neutron energy, scattered neutron energy, and scattered proton energy, as well as the scattering angle and position of the scattered neutron. The results of the experiment are compared with a Monte Carlo simulation of neutron-proton scattering, to observe the differences between two-body and three-body quasielastic collisions. The four-dimensional differential cross section for the d(n, np)n reaction is determined from the data.

Book excerpt: In an earlier investigation, we have explored the possibility of explaining the deuteron breakup mechanism in terms of the Udagawa and Tannura (UT) formalism of the breakup-fusion process. The experimental doubly differential data were very well reproduced for the test case studies. However, the application of UT formalism of the spirit of DWBA involves the use of optical-model parameters for different nuclei and at different energies. The optical model parameters are not always unique. In the present study we investigate the deuteron breakup mechanism in terms of the semiclassical models of Serber (for the nuclear interaction part) and Dancoff (for the electromagnetic dissociation). In the case of Serber model the modification due to the finite range of the deuteron and the Glauber correction for the diffractive disassociation are considered. The modified deuteron breakup cross section either for the (d, p) or the (d, n) process is proportional to the product of the target radius and the deuteron radius (R{sub target} {center dot} R{sub deuteron}). The predicted proton/neutron spectrum is centered around 1/2 E{sub d} and forward peaked. The Coulomb dissociation of deuteron is attributed to the deuteron dipole excitation in the presence of the nuclear Coulomb field. The neutron/proton spectrum, resulting from the Coulomb breakup of the deuteron, is highly forward peaked and also centered around 1/2 E{sub d}. The systematics of the deuteron breakup neutron/proton spectra are investigated for medium to heavy target nuclei at 50--200 MeV deuteron energies. 10 refs., 4 figs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Particle tracking software has been developed to measure the energy of protons scattered in the breakup process d(n, np)n. The nd breakup experiment is performed at the Weapons Neutron Research facilities at Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. In order to fully define breakup kinematics for the stationary deuterium target, the following are measured: incident neutron beam energy, scattered proton energy and angle, and one of the scattered neutron angles. The proton energy is determined using a permanent magnet spectrometer, consisting of two permanent magnets placed between two wire chamber detectors. A particle tracking code uses the particle hit positions in the wire chambers to determine the proton's curvature (and hence deduce its energy) as it passes through the magnetic field of the magnets. Monte Carlo simulations show that the kinetic energy resolution is better at lower proton energies, when the magnetic field bends the particle more. The ultimate goal of the experiment is to measure the five-fold differential cross section to look for effects of three-nucleon forces.

Book excerpt: The effect of breakup on the elastic deuteron-nucleus scattering elements S/sub L, L'/sup J/ is calculated numerically for deuterons incident on /sup 64/Ni for the energies of 13, 21.6, and 45 MeV. The S's are decomposed into central, spin orbit and tensor components. All three are affected strongly by breakup, and so are the various polarization angular distributions. The calculation proceeds in second order distorted wave Born approximation and includes breakup energies up to 40 MeV divided into two bins. Three values of the neutron--proton relative angular momenta j = 1, 2, and 3 are included. The n--p potential is that of Reid, and the nucleon-nucleus optical potential is that of Becchetti and Greenlees. Comparison with experiment at 45 MeV for d sigma/d.cap omega. and T/sub 11/ is presented. 23 references.
