Book An Analysis of South Carolina Per Pupil State Funding

Download or read book An Analysis of South Carolina Per Pupil State Funding written by Susan L. Aud and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many states, including South Carolina, school choice is being discussed as perhaps the best way to both improve student achievement and spend education dollars more efficiently. The evidence from the 12 school choice programs currently running around the country is that the increased competition among public and private schools leads to more successful students and better public schools. Moreover, evidence is mounting that public schools are not harmed financially by offering students the opportunity to choose their school, either public or private. Few people would argue that the state does not have a compelling public interest in spending generously to achieve the goal of fully educating children. Many people, however, reasonably argue that the compelling public interest to finance education is qualitatively different than subsidizing a government owned and operated school system. Funding the education of the public is not the same thing as simply and only financing public schools. Yet, when the debate about school financing takes place, this question is often ignored. Many times, perceptions and rhetoric are presented as truth, and facts are either conveniently overlooked or shaped to fit one side of the argument. Right now, South Carolina is in the midst of the debate about school choice and the most effective use of education dollars. To increase clarity, this study accurately evaluates the categories of state funding for public schools, establishes the average total state cost per student, analyzes variable education costs versus fixed costs, and determines the precise portion of per-student funding the state provides based on the type of student and district.

Book Return on Investment A Multisite Case Study of Cost Effective High Achieving South Carolina School Districts

Download or read book Return on Investment A Multisite Case Study of Cost Effective High Achieving South Carolina School Districts written by Timothy Nelson and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this multisite case study was to understand and explain how a school district can be cost-efficient and sustain high student academic achievement. Based on a 2011 study, three school districts were selected because they had high ratios of student academic achievement to per pupil expenditures. The school districts differed in size, geographic location, student body demographics, and district organizational structure. Using a postpositivist perspective and a transformational leadership theoretical framework, 15 in-depth interviews with district leaders and school principals were conducted along with evaluation of district archives and South Carolina school report card data. A flexible, qualitative design was used to allow modifications in the research plan, but the overall structure followed the general scientific method. Cross-case analysis found districts which are cost-effective and provide high student academic achievement (a) cultivate camaraderie among administrators and faculty, (b) provide individualized attention to students, (c) complete comprehensive data analysis, (d) advance a strong relationship with community members, and (e) focus on priorities.

Book School Size and Its Relationship to Student Outcomes and School Climate

Download or read book School Size and Its Relationship to Student Outcomes and School Climate written by Kenneth R. Stevenson and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author reviews eight school size studies performed by doctoral students and graduate faculty at the University of South Carolina. These studies examine the relationship of South Carolina school size to academic achievement and to costs per student at all grade span groupings, including elementary, middle, and high school. The studies are categorized by grade span covered, and their methodology and findings summarized. Results of the studies are varied and sometimes contradictory, and additional issues arise such as poverty, differing results in grade spans, cost versus outcomes, middle and elementary school climate factors, and variance of the South Carolina findings from those in other states. Smaller middle schools appeared to produce better student outcomes, and where larger elementary and high schools appear to perform better, there is evidence that results vary dramatically depending on the children served.

Book The Relationship Between Per Pupil Expenditure and Student Achievement in Virginia Public Schools

Download or read book The Relationship Between Per Pupil Expenditure and Student Achievement in Virginia Public Schools written by Elizabeth N. Shupe and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Legislators, policymakers, and educators rely on empirical evidence from research to make financial decisions regarding education funding. The purpose of this study was to examine the expenditures of the school districts in the Commonwealth of Virginia for the period of 2007 to 2017 and to determine what effect the level of expenditures had, if any, on student achievement at the state, region, and district level. The researcher found a negative correlation trend between per pupil expenditure and average Standards of Learning pass rate for students in Virginia, for students in the 19 school districts of Region VII in Virginia, and also for the students in a small rural district in Virginia. The researcher concluded that per pupil expenditure alone was not an accurate predictor of student achievement and that the socioeconomic status or poverty level of the student was a more reliable predictor of performance on SOL pass rate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How schools budget and spend the money they receiveAnalyzes links (or their absence) to educational goalsA candid guide to how resources are used in schools Based on extensive research and hands-on school budgeting, this volume is a systematic exposition of how money is collected and spent in the thousands of public school districts in the US, as well as parochial, private and charter schools. The volume explains both the paper trail of how money is allocated in budgets and justified in outlays, as well as the decision-making steps authorizing the collection and spending of funds. A thesis of the book is that money for schools should in all instances contribute to the promotion of educational goals. The book shows that the determination of, as well as the realization, of such goals is subject to complexities that result in questionable uses of limited resources--a result that has wide implications.
