Book excerpt: Organizational trust refers to the tendency of individuals or groups within an organization to trust each other. Tschannen-Moran (2004) describes trust as one's "willingness to be vulnerable to another based on the confidence that the other is benevolent, honest, open, reliable, and competent" (p. 17). The purpose of this study was to research the faculty perceptions of actions of community college presidents that increase organizational trust. A single college case study was used for this study. To participate, community colleges had to be in the state of Washington, not be in a district, be at least 20 years old, and be of average size in the state, defined as having between 3,000 and 12,000 full-time enrollments. Also, the president and faculty union representative expressed willingness to support the research and indicated that the institution was an appropriate place to study organizational trust. Informants were required to be tenured faculty members with at least ten years at the college. Informants were recommended by the president, vice-president of academic affairs, and the faculty union representative. Thirteen faculty members were interviewed. Responses were analyzed and seven themes were created. Those themes were autonomy, communication, shared governance, interaction, commitment to excellence, putting people first, and shared vision. Autonomy, communication, commitment to excellence, and putting people first are very similar to those found in the Tschannen-Moran Model. However, shared governance, interaction, and shared vision all had a less direct connection to the model. Each theme consisted of many examples of actions of the president that increased organizational trust.

Book excerpt: Based on a study of 256 exemplary community college presidents, this book examines the attributes of outstanding leaders and their ability to orchestrate organizational change. Chapter 1 provides the background for the study, emphasizes the importance of leadership, and identifies attributes common to transformational leaders; that is, leaders who work with their followers so that each raises the other to higher levels of motivation and morality. Chapter 2 summarizes leadership theory and offers a discussion of transformational leadership and its place in a rapidly changing society. After chapter 3 reviews the study methodology, chapters 4 and 5 present findings on the demographic and leadership characteristics of the presidents selected for in-depth study. Chapters 6 through 10 discuss key elements of transformational leadership, including shared vision, teamwork and collaborative decision making, institutional climate and the relationship between the institution and the individuals within it, motivation as a means of achieving followers' acceptance of the shared vision, and personal values, integrity, and commitment to learning. Chapter 11 examines women in community college leadership roles. Finally, chapter 12 presents a summary of the research, a discussion of the problems faced by minority leaders, and a review of study implications. The survey instruments and an eighty-five-item bibliography are appended.

Book excerpt: Although campus crises have been an ever-present aspect of college life, they have been increasing in number and intensity. While disasters prompted many colleges to prepare crisis plans, the COVID-19 pandemic presented unique challenges. Effective and timely crisis leadership can affect the crisis outcome. By understanding the leadership styles and behaviors used in a crisis, it can inform best practices for handling future campus crises. The purpose of this qualitative case study is to explore how the COVID 19 pandemic affected leadership styles and behaviors of Midwestern community college presidents. The study is primarily driven by one question, what are Midwestern community college presidents' perceptions of how their leadership and decisions had changed in response to the COVID-19 global pandemic. Study data were collected through semi-structured interviews and artifacts. The interviews were analyzed using thematic coding looking for common patterns and themes. The data were examined using a theoretical framework of interpretivism and symbolic interactionism. The conceptual framework incorporated crisis leadership styles, effective leadership competencies, and crisis leadership competencies within the context of community college governance and the COVID-19 crisis. The conceptual framework was to further understand how community college president's leadership style and behaviors had changed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Community college presidents navigated the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on the study results, there are five recommendations for practice. The five recommendations are: prioritize safety of faculty, staff, students and the community; develop broad-based crisis management programs, encourage leaders to include mental health services in crisis planning, leverage crisis communications, and understand the criticality of connections.

The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of presidential leadership style according to gender on the quality of community colleges. The proposed path is modeled as follows: gender-> presidential leadership style-> the quality of community colleges. Methodology. The study uses the survey methodology to analyze data collected from 82 faculty members in 10 California community colleges. Presidential leadership effectiveness, specifically transformational leadership, is measured using the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (Bass & Avolio, 2000). Transformational leadership includes idealized influence, inspiration motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individual consideration (Bass, 1998). The quality of community colleges includes input quality and outcome quality. Input quality includes faculty quality and equipment quality. Faculty quality is measured using the percentage of full-time faculty and the student-faculty ratio. Equipment quality is measured using computer-student ratio and library books-student ratio. Outcome quality is measured using student transfer rates and graduation rates. Findings. The results of the study show that a difference between male presidents and female presidents in transformational leadership was not found. However, transformational leadership was associated with the quality of community colleges. There was a significant relationship between transformational leadership and the quality of community colleges, including total quality and input quality. However, there was not a significant relationship between transformational leadership and outcome quality. At the college level, there was no significant relationship between gender of presidents and the quality of community colleges, including total quality, input quality, and outcome quality. Considering the perceptions of individual faculty members, there was a difference in favor of male presidents on total quality and outcome quality. Conclusions. The results indicate that the transformational leadership model can lead to the improvement of quality in community colleges for both male and female presidents.

Book excerpt: The study examined urban university faculty members' perceptions of their presidents' leadership role in urban school reform. The population for this study consisted of faculty members from five urban research universities. All of the universities are members of the Great Cities' Universities (GCU) coalition, an alliance of 19 public urban research universities that are collaborating to address educational challenges in their communities. The study entailed a purposive sample with universities chosen on the basis of their membership in the GCU. The subjects were 245 faculty members from colleges of education and colleges of arts and sciences at the five urban research universities. All participants completed the Urban Faculty Questionnaire (UFQ), a confidential, web-based questionnaire designed by the researcher. The questionnaire consisted of five statements about general perceptions of urban school reform, 30 statements about perceptions of the university presidents' leadership roles in the specific institutions' urban school reform initiatives, eight statements regarding personal characteristics and a section for optional additional comments. The statements corresponded to seven internal scales of analysis. The seven scales were (a) Perceptions of Urban School Reform, (b) University Structure and Culture, (c) Presidential Awareness, (d) Internal Relationships, (e) External Relationships, (f) Resources and Support and (g) Accountability and Recognition. The data show faculty believe urban schools need reform. Faculty also believe universities located in urban communities should be involved actively in urban school reform. Faculty generally do not take personal responsibility, however, for urban school reform initiatives at their universities. Faculty seem more aware of their presidents' external relationships than their internal relationships in urban school reform. Faculty tend to agree that their presidents build strong relationships with the local business community and with the local political community; however, they tend only somewhat to agree that their presidents build strong relationships with local public school representatives and local families and citizens. The study also reveals that no statistically significant difference exists in faculty perceptions of their presidents' leadership in urban school reform by the faculty members' academic college, academic rank, years of service at their current institutions, highest academic degree earned, gender and ethnicity.
