Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was two-fold: (1) to investigate the effect of movement instruction on memorization and retention of new-song material in first- grade students, and (2) to explore the differences between the types of movement (nonlocomotor and locomotor) used in the process of instruction upon memorization and retention of new-song material. Participants for this study consisted of 92 first-grade students selected from a suburban public school in Northeast Ohio. These students were tested in two experiments. Through a group treatment procedure, using the whole-song approach, and individual testing of song learning across two time periods, a quantitative analysis measured the effects of movement versus non-movement instruction for the variables of text, pitch, rhythm, and melodic contour. Using the same whole-song approach, the same children, and the same testing procedures, a second experiment was conducted to determine the effects of locomotor and nonlocomotor movement instruction on text, pitch, rhythm, and melodic contour. The results of the two experiments indicated that movement instruction significantly enhanced memorization of text, rhythm, and pitch. Further research on the specific effects of movement instruction on music learning and music literacy, as well as learning and literacy in general, is necessary. Successful music education practices depend on continued research on early childhood musical development.

It lays out a Nordic, or continental European teaching and learning paradigm whose didactic framework is distinct from the Anglo-American system. This analysis, which features contributions and case studies from researchers in a range of subjects, is built on principles such as the learner’s perspective, establishing sufficient intersubjectivity, ‘pointing out’, and informing experience linguistically. After clarifying some historical background, the book discusses the contemporary emphasis in early childhood education on pedagogy/learning. What should ‘didactics’ mean in educating young children? The book examines the opportunities for learning that teachers provide for children in early childhood education, as well as how children respond to these opportunities. It presents empirical studies from a variety of naturalistic settings, including mathematics, making visual art, ecology, music, dance, literacy and story-telling, as well as learning about gender, morality and democracy. The authors seek to answer key questions about the processes involved in both teaching and learning. What challenges do teachers face as they try to expand children’s knowledge in various fields of learning? How do they respond to these challenges, and what can we learn about children’s corresponding uptake? What now requires further research? One key distinction in researching children’s learning is between studies that look at ‘process’ and those that analyze ‘product’. Study of the arts employs a form of thinking and a way of understanding based on human judgment, invention, and imagination. This publication represents a strong consensus on the skills, knowledge, and abilities in dance, music, theater, and visual arts that all students should be able to master at each grade levels, pre-kindergarten through grade twelve, in California public schools. The standards were built on the components of arts education contained in the "Visual and Performing Arts Framework for California," which was adopted in 1996. The strands and standards in this publication describe the content that students need to master by the end of each grade level or cluster of grades (grades 9 through 12 at the proficient and advanced levels). For each arts discipline the content standards are grouped under five visual and performing arts strands: artistic perception; creative expression; historical and cultural context; aesthetic valuing; and connections, relations, and applications. At each grade level, pre-kindergarten through grade eight, content standards are specified for each strand. For students in grades 9 through 12, the proficient level of achievement can be attained at the end of one year of high school study within an arts discipline after the student has attained the achievement level required of all students in grade eight. The publication is organized according to the four arts disciplines: dance, music, theater, and visual arts. A glossary of key terms is provided at the end of the standards for each of the arts. (BT)
