Book A Study of Slavery in New Jersey Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Study of Slavery in New Jersey Classic Reprint written by Henry Scofield Cooley and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of Slavery in New Jersey An accurate and thorough knowledge of slavery as it developed in the United States can best be gained by a comparative study of the institution as it has existed in the various States. Preparatory to such a study, the experience of each of these commonwealths needs to be investigated separately. This has been done in several instances very satisfactorily. The writer has aimed to follow lines of investigation already opened, and has pursued the history of slavery in New Jersey, his native State. New Jersey history is conveniently studied in three periods: the period of the Proprietary Colony, 1664-1702; the period of the Province of the Crown, 1702-1776; and the period of the State. These divisions have not been adopted in the plan of this monograph, an arrangement by subject appearing more desirable; but it is hoped that they have been sufficiently recognized throughout the paper. In general, in the Proprietary Colony we find the early beginnings of slavery; in the royal Colony, a steady increase in the number of slaves, and special forms of trial and punishment for slaves prescribed in the criminal law. This was also the period of a strong abolition movement among the Friends, ending in 1776 with the denial by Friends of the right of membership in their Society to slaveholders. In the State the anti-slavery movement, largely under the leadership of the abolition societies, grew to greater and greater strength. Its influence showed itself in practical ways in the support given to negroes before the courts, in the extinction of the slave trade, and in the passage of the gradual abolition law of 1804. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contrary to popular perception, slavery persisted in the North well into the nineteenth century. This was especially the case in New Jersey, the last northern state to pass an abolition statute, in 1804. Because of the nature of the law, which freed children born to enslaved mothers only after they had served their mother's master for more than two decades, slavery continued in New Jersey through the Civil War. Passage of the Thirteenth Amendment in 1865 finally destroyed its last vestiges. The Ragged Road to Abolition chronicles the experiences of slaves and free blacks, as well as abolitionists and slaveholders, during slavery's slow northern death. Abolition in New Jersey during the American Revolution was a contested battle, in which constant economic devastation and fears of freed blacks overrunning the state government limited their ability to gain freedom. New Jersey's gradual abolition law kept at least a quarter of the state's black population in some degree of bondage until the 1830s. The sustained presence of slavery limited African American community formation and forced Jersey blacks to structure their households around multiple gradations of freedom while allowing New Jersey slaveholders to participate in the interstate slave trade until the 1850s. Slavery's persistence dulled white understanding of the meaning of black freedom and helped whites to associate "black" with "slave," enabling the further marginalization of New Jersey's growing free black population. By demonstrating how deeply slavery influenced the political, economic, and social life of blacks and whites in New Jersey, this illuminating study shatters the perceived easy dichotomies between North and South or free states and slave states at the onset of the Civil War.

Book Slavery and Freedom in the Rural North

Download or read book Slavery and Freedom in the Rural North written by Graham Russell Hodges and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1997 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the development of a single African American community in eastern New Jersey, Hodges examines the experience of slavery and freedom in the rural north. This unique social history addresses many long held assumptions about the experience of slavery and emancipation outside the south. For example, by tracing the process by which whites maintained "a durable architecture of oppression" and a rigid racial hierarchy, it challenges the notions that slavery was milder and that racial boundaries were more permeable in the north. Monmouth County, New Jersey, because of its rich African American heritage and equally well-preserved historical record, provides an outstanding opportunity to study the rural life of an entire community over the course of two centuries. Hodges weaves an intricate pattern of life and death, work and worship, from the earliest settlement to the end of the Civil War.

This book was released on 2017-12-16 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Legal Argument Before the Supreme Court of the State of New Jersey: At the May Term, 1845, at Trenton, for the Deliverance of Four Thousand Persons From Bondage The return in the case of john A. Post was the same in substance, that he held the said William, a colored man, as a slave by virtue of the law aforesaid, being born before 1804. To these returns general demurrers were put in, alleging the institution of slavery was abolished, and that the returns did not state sufficient authority to authorize the defendants to hold said persons To which there was a joinder in demurrer. Both of these causes were argued together, depending on the same laws for their support, and for the purpose of obtaining a judicial deci Sion, overthrowing the system of slavery in New Jersey, in all its parts. The following pages are intended to be the substance of the argument and reply of alvan stewart, Esq., of New York, who appeared for the slave and servant, as their Counsel. The first article of the new Constitution of New Jersey, of September, 1844, is entitled rights and privileges. All men are by nature free and independent, and have certain natural and unalienable rights, among which are those of enjoying and defend. Ing life and liberty, acquiring, possessing and protecting property, and Of pursuing and obtaining safety and happiness. Book History of Slavery in Connecticut Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of Slavery in Connecticut Classic Reprint written by Bernard Christian Steiner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-05 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Slavery in Connecticut Few questions have been more interesting to the American people than slavery, and the number of works which have appeared upon the subject has been proportional to the interest aroused. The slavery of negroes has been discussed from almost every point of view, and yet the in uence of slavery upon individual States of the Union and its different history and characteristics in the several States have not received the attention they deserve. There have been two able works dealing with this branch of the subject, tracing thoroughly the course of the institution of slavery in the two States of Massachusetts and Maryland. As Massachusetts was the first State of the original number to free her slaves, and as Maryland was a typical Border State, these mono graphs, apart from their accuracy and completeness, have been valuable contributions to the study of slavery in the separate States, but they stand almost alone. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dutch and English settlers brought the first enslaved people to New Jersey in the seventeenth century. By the time of the Revolutionary War, slavery was an established practice on labor-intensive farms throughout what became known as the Garden State. The progenitor of the influential Morris family, Lewis Morris, brought Barbadian slaves to toil on his estate of Tinton Manor in Monmouth County. Colonel Tye, an escaped slave from Shrewsbury, joined the British Ethiopian Regiment during the Revolutionary War and led raids throughout the towns and villages near his former home. Charles Reeves and Hannah Van Clief married soon after their emancipation in 1850 and became prominent citizens of Lincroft, as did their next four generations. Author Rick Geffken reveals stories from New Jersey's dark history of slavery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Negro in Maryland, Vol. 6: A Study of the Institution of Slavery But it was in Christ only that all men were brethren. The captive heathen or infidel became usually the slave of his Christian conqueror. It was due chiefly to the conquest of the Spaniards over the Moors and to the rising trade of the Spaniards and Portuguese with Africa, that there grew Up for Europe a new form of chattel slavery. And if the zeal Of the earlier church had helped the fall of the old slavery, the' zeal and bigotry of good churchmen of this age certainly had a part, conscious or unconscious, in the rise Of the new. Whole droves Of slaves, wrote Bodin, in 1576, are sold and that openly in all parts of Portugal, as if they were beasts. 3 By the trade with Africa, negro slaves were brought, to a limited extent, to Portugal and Spain. Prince Henry of Portugal, in 1442, insisted that negroes should be brought there; for whatever number he should get, he would gain souls, because they might be converted to the faith, which could not be managed with the Moors.4 And certainly, adds the Old chronicler, his thought was not vain, for as soon as they had knowledge of our language, they readily became Christians. It is not necessary to dwell on the extreme zeal of the Church in that age - so well seen in the Inquisition. It was the received Opinion, says Prescott. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Jersey: A History of the Garden State presents a fresh, comprehensive overview of New Jersey’s history from the prehistoric era to the present. The findings of archaeologists, political, social, and economic historians provide a new look at how the Garden State has evolved. The state has a rich Native American heritage and complex colonial history. It played a pivotal role in the American Revolution, early industrialization, and technological developments in transportation, including turnpikes, canals, and railroads. The nineteenth century saw major debates over slavery. While no Civil War battles were fought in New Jersey, most residents supported it while questioning the policies of the federal government. Next, the contributors turn to industry, urbanization, and the growth of shore communities. A destination for immigrants, New Jersey continued to be one of the most diverse states in the nation. Many of these changes created a host of social problems that reformers tried to minimize during the Progressive Era. Settlement houses were established, educational institutions grew, and utopian communities were founded. Most notably, women gained the right to vote in 1920. In the decades leading up to World War II, New Jersey benefited from back-to-work projects, but the rise of the local Ku Klux Klan and the German American Bund were sad episodes during this period. The story then moves to the rise of suburbs, the concomitant decline of the state’s cities, growing population density, and changing patterns of wealth. Deep-seated racial inequities led to urban unrest as well as political change, including such landmark legislation as the Mount Laurel decision. Today, immigration continues to shape the state, as does the tension between the needs of the suburbs, cities, and modest amounts of remaining farmland. Well-known personalities, such as Jonathan Edwards, George Washington, Woodrow Wilson, Dorothea Dix, Thomas Edison, Frank Hague, and Albert Einstein appear in the narrative. Contributors also mine new and existing sources to incorporate fully scholarship on women, minorities, and immigrants. All chapters are set in the context of the history of the United States as a whole, illustrating how New Jersey is often a bellwether for the nation..

This he did by a strong exposition of his sentiments, when be supposed they might have the least influence on the minds of those whom he met; and so deeply was his mind engaged with this important concern, that he sought opportunities of provoking discussion respecting it wherever he went. Book Slavery and the War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Slavery and the War Classic Reprint written by Orestes Augustus Brownson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Slavery and the War The question'of the abolition of slavery is becoming with us a prac tical question in a sense it has never before been. The Rebellion of the Slave States, which has for its object, not so much the dissolution of the Union, or the separation of the South from the North, as the reconstruction of the Union on the basis of slavery, or, as the Vice President of the Confederate States has it, with slavery as its corner stone, and therefore the extension of slavery over the whole country, cannot fail to force this question upon the grave attention of every citizen of the loyal States, who loves his country, and believes in the practicability of freedom. The Slave States, by their rebellion and war on the Union, are compelling us to regard this question as one which must soon be practically met, and are forcing all loyal citizens to make their election between the preservation of the Union and the preservation of slavery. This, whatever the Federal administration, whatever individuals or parties in the Free States, with, or without Southern or pro-slavery proclivities, may wish or desire, is pretty soon to be the inevitable issue of the terrible struggle in which our glorious, and hitherto peaceful Republic is now engaged. Perhaps, at the moment we write, the last of August, a majority of the people of the Free States may not only shrink from this issue, but even honestly be lieve it possible to avert it altogether. The bare suggestion of the abolition of slavery may shock, perhaps, enrage them; but events march, and men who mean to be successful, or not to be left behind, must march with them. Another disaster, like that of Bull Run, or another unsuccessful action, like that of, Wilson's Creek, where the brave and noble-hearted Lyon fell, a martyr to the cause of his country, and a victim to the failure of his government to send him timely aid, will do much to change the feelings and convictions of the loyal citizens of the Free States, and, perhaps, force them to give up the last h0pe or thought of preserving both the Union and the institution of slavery. It requires, however chary our public men may be even of Whispering it, no extraordinary sagacity or foresight to perceive that, if the present war is to be continued, and the integrity of the nation restored and maintained, the war can hardly fail to become a war of liberation, or that the Northern blood and treasure, which it demands for its success ful prosecution, will demand in return, as their indemnification, the emancipation of the slave, and the universal adoption for the South as well as the North of our Free Labor System.
