Book Emerging Topics and Controversies in Neonatology

Download or read book Emerging Topics and Controversies in Neonatology written by Elaine M. Boyle and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-05 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook addresses the themes that are at the forefront of neonatal clinical care and research, based on natural divisions in care during pregnancy, and postnatally by gestational age at birth. The book offers a unique approach, in that it proposes discussion of important general principles underpinning neonatal care that are not addressed in most general neonatology textbooks, such as ethical issues, counselling, effective training methods, quality and safety, among other subjects. These are fundamental aspects and challenges that need to be appreciated by senior clinicians. A chapter authored by parents describing their perspectives of neonatal intensive care is unique and will be highly educational, with the potential to influence the way in which individuals view and deliver neonatal care. The authors discuss common and important conditions, to promote adoption of sound evidenced based practice where this is available. However, where evidence is limited, as is the case in many areas of neonatal practice, the authors aim to encourage critical thinking and evidence appraisal, which are necessary skills for busy clinicians wishing to filter evidence to guide delivery of care. This text is suitable for senior trainees wishing to pursue a career in neonatal medicine, early career neonatologists and paediatricians with an interest in neonatology. It is also of interest to established neonatologists wishing to update their neonatal knowledge. The content is based on the RCPCH Level 3 curriculum, and addresses important topical and/or controversial aspects of neonatal care.

The case studies and the evidence-based practice dialogues at the end of each chapter provide great opportunities for further reflection. The book is useful to a wide audience in nursing, including undergraduate and graduate nursing students, practicing neonatal and pediatric nurses, and advanced practice nurses who care for neonates." Score: 92, 4 Stars.--Doody's Medical Reviews This 'classic' has been thoroughly updated to incorporate the most up-to-date research findings and strategies for providing cost-effective and evidence-based care. New chapters address emerging infections, the late preterm infant, and neonatal care from a global perspective. Included are updated neonatal care protocols and procedures, neuroprotective risk factors, new treatments, and new trends in developmental care. Text integrates the Institute of Medicine's (10M) five competencies, reflects the Affordable Healthcare Act and the Robert Wood Johnson and 10M report "The Future of Nursing." The text continues to provide neonatal care from a physiologic and pathophysiologic approach, with a major emphasis on nursing management at the bedside and advanced practice level. Each neonatal body system is presented, along with E-B interventions to assist in understanding the 'why' behind what is seen in the clinical area. Integrative management is threaded through the text along with extensive research findings to support practice strategies and rationales for sound clinical decision-making. Topics of recent interest include iatrogenic complications, neonatal pain, use of computers or other technology in neonatal care, and neonatal AIDS. Case studies enhance understanding of both common and rare neonatal conditions. New to the Fifth Edition: New chapters: emerging infections, the late preterm infant, and neonatal care from a global perspective Updated neonatal care protocols and procedures, neuroprotective factors, new treatment modalities and new trends in developmental care Tackles the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Addresses the expansion of the nurse's role in the US and worldwide Provides case studies that lead the reader through the identification, diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation of common and rare neonatal conditions

Book Anaesthesia and Intensive Care in Neonates and Children

Download or read book Anaesthesia and Intensive Care in Neonates and Children written by I. Salvo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The anesthesia and intensive care in infants and children have assumed positions of primary importance in contemporary medicine. In these delicate sectors of medicine, clinical research activities must be continually supported by interdisciplinary collaborations. Neonatal and pediatric intensive care requires that all involved physicians, including the surgeon and anesthesiologist, be willing to work together as a team. However, coordination of the various pathophysiological and clinical aspects of neonatal and pediatric critical medicine is highly complex. A complete and current review of the anaethesia and intensive care of infants and children must include discussions of morbidity rates, so as to guide the clincians in choosing the diagnostic approach, as well as of monotoring techniques appropriate to support the therapeutic decision. Recent progress in intensive care medicine for infants and children has been significant.

Book Healthcare Associated Infections in Children

Download or read book Healthcare Associated Infections in Children written by J. Chase McNeil and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-30 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With advances in technology and medical science, children with previously untreatable and often fatal conditions, such as congenital heart disease, extreme prematurity and pediatric malignancy, are living longer. While this is a tremendous achievement, pediatric providers are now more commonly facing challenges in these medical complex children both as a consequence of their underlying disease and the delivery of medical care. The term healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) encompass both infections that occur in the hospital and those that occur as a consequence of healthcare exposure and medical complexity in the outpatient setting. HAIs are associated with substantial morbidity and mortality for the individual patient as well as seriously taxing the healthcare system as a whole. In studies from the early 2000s, over 11% of all children in pediatric intensive care units develop HAIs and this figure increases substantially if neonatal intensive care units are considered. While progress has been made in decreasing the rates of HAI in the hospital, these infections remain a major burden on the medical system. In a study published in 2013, the annual estimated costs of the five most common HAIs in the United States totaled $9.8 billion. An estimated 648,000 patients developed HAIs in hospitals within the US in 2011 and children with healthcare-associated bloodstream infection have a greater than three-fold increased risk of death. While a number of texts discuss HAIs in the broader context of infectious diseases or pediatric infectious diseases (such as Mandell’s Principles and Practice of Infectious Diseases or Long and Pickering’s Principles and Practice of Pediatric Infectious Diseases) no single text specifically focuses on the epidemiology, diagnosis and management of HAI in children. Many infectious diseases texts are organized based on the microbiology of infection and from this starting point then discussing the clinical syndromes associated with the organism of interest. For instance, a chapter on Staphylococcus aureus may contain a brief discussion of the role of S. aureus in surgical site infections in the wider context of all staphylococcal disease. For clinicians caring for children at the bedside, however, the clinical syndrome is typically appreciated and intervention necessary prior to organism identification. We propose a text that details both the general principles involved in HAIs and infection prevention but also provides a problem oriented approach. Such a text would be of interest to intensivists, neonatologists, hospitalists, oncologists, infection preventionists and infectious diseases specialists. The proposed text will be divided into three principle sections: 1) Basic Principles of Infection Control and Prevention, 2) Major Infectious Syndromes and 3) Infections in Vulnerable Hosts. Chapters in the Major Infectious Syndromes section will include discussion of the epidemiology, microbiology, clinical features, diagnosis, medical management (or surgical management as appropriate) and prevention of the disease entity of interest. Chapters will seek to be evidenced based as much as possible drawing from the published medical literature as well as from clinical practice guidelines (such as those from the Infectious Diseases Society of America) when applicable. We intend to include tables, figures and algorithms as appropriate to assist clinicians in the evaluation and management of these often complex patients. Finally, we intend to invite authors to participate in this project from across a number of medical specialties including infectious diseases, infection control, critical care, oncology and surgery to provide a multidisciplinary understanding of disease. It is our intent to have many chapters be co-written by individuals in different subspecialties; for instance, a chapter on ventilator-associated pneumonia may be co-written by both infectious disease and critical care medicine specialists. Such a unique text has the potential to provide important guidance for clinicians caring for these often fragile children.

Book Neonatal Infections

  • Author : Joseph B. Cantey
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2018-06-18
  • ISBN : 3319900382
  • Pages : 254 pages

Download or read book Neonatal Infections written by Joseph B. Cantey and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-18 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are approximately 4 million newborns annually in the United States, including 400,000 infants born preterm. This care occurs in nurseries of all acuity levels, sizes, and regions across the country and is provided by a variety of providers, including pediatricians, family practice doctors, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants. The most common complication during the newborn period is suspected or proven infection – either those acquired during the delivery itself or before delivery in the womb. Indeed, 4 of the 8 most commonly-prescribed medications in newborns annually are antibiotics. Therefore, these providers must all be knowledgeable about the clinical presentation, epidemiology, and approach to diagnosis, treatment and prevention of neonatal infections. However, many of these nurseries do not have convenient access to pediatric infectious disease consultation or support, and would benefit from a convenient reference guide. This book effectively and succinctly covers the pathophysiology, epidemiology, clinical presentation, approach to diagnosis and treatment, and important aspects of preventative care for the most frequently encountered neonatal and congenital infections. The first section discusses common neonatal infections (i.e., those acquired during or after delivery), including sepsis, meningitis, pneumonia, and other focal infections. The second section covers the most frequently encountered congenital infections (i.e., those acquired via the placenta while the fetus is still in-utero). Finally, the concluding section discusses the basics of infection prevention in the nursery setting, including general principles of infection prevention, how to apply those principles to families, and how to manage a suspected outbreak of infection within a nursery. This book is a unique contribution to the field. Existing texts such as the AAP Red Book fold neonatal infections in within chapters on a given pathogen, but the information is difficult to find and access quickly. By covering neonatal and congenital infections thoroughly while still keeping each section clear and concise, this Handbook will be a valuable resource for the busy nursery provider.
