Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The destructive force of earthquakes has stimulated human inquiry since ancient times, yet the scientific study of earthquakes is a surprisingly recent endeavor. Instrumental recordings of earthquakes were not made until the second half of the 19th century, and the primary mechanism for generating seismic waves was not identified until the beginning of the 20th century. From this recent start, a range of laboratory, field, and theoretical investigations have developed into a vigorous new discipline: the science of earthquakes. As a basic science, it provides a comprehensive understanding of earthquake behavior and related phenomena in the Earth and other terrestrial planets. As an applied science, it provides a knowledge base of great practical value for a global society whose infrastructure is built on the Earth's active crust. This book describes the growth and origins of earthquake science and identifies research and data collection efforts that will strengthen the scientific and social contributions of this exciting new discipline.

Book A Study of Recent Earthquakes Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Study of Recent Earthquakes Classic Reprint written by Charles Davison and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of Recent Earthquakes The present volume differs from a text-book of seismology in giving brief, though detailed, accounts of individual earthquakes rather than a discussion of the phenomena and distribution of earthquakes in general. At the close of his Les Tremblements de Terre, Professor Fouque has devoted a few chapters to some of the principal earthquakes between 1854 and 1887; and there are also the well-known chapters in Lyell's Principles of Geology dealing with earthquakes of a still earlier date. With these exceptions, there is no other work covering the same ground; and he who wishes to study any particular earthquake can only do so by reading long reports or series of papers written perhaps in several different languages. The object of this volume is to save him this trouble, and to present to him the facts that seem most worthy of his attention. Book Earthquakes in the Mediterranean and Middle East

Download or read book Earthquakes in the Mediterranean and Middle East written by Nicholas Ambraseys and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-10-22 with total page 2571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines historical evidence from the last 2000 years to analyse earthquakes in the eastern Mediterranean and Middle East. Early chapters review techniques of historical seismology, while the main body of the book comprises a catalogue of more than 4000 earthquakes identified from historical sources. Each event is supported by textual evidence extracted from primary sources and translated into English. Covering southern Rumania, Greece, Turkey, Lebanon, Israel, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Iraq, the book documents past seismic events, places them in a broad tectonic framework, and provides essential information for those attempting to prepare for, and mitigate the effects of, future earthquakes and tsunamis in these countries. This volume is an indispensable reference for researchers studying the seismic history of the eastern Mediterranean and Middle East, including archaeologists, historians, earth scientists, engineers and earthquake hazard analysts. A parametric catalogue of these seismic events can be downloaded from www.cambridge.org/9780521872928.

Book Earthquakes Simulations Sources and Tsunamis

Download or read book Earthquakes Simulations Sources and Tsunamis written by Kristy F. Tiampo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-11-04 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume attempts to present the current state of seismic research by focusing not only on the modeling of earthquakes and earthquake generated tsunamis, but also on practical comparisons of the resulting phenomenology. In the 1990s, major advancements in seismic research greatly added to the understanding of earthquake fault systems as complex dynamical systems. Large quantities of new and extensive remote sensing data sets provided information on the solid earth.
