Book Factors Correlating with Teachers Use of Computers in the Classroom

Download or read book Factors Correlating with Teachers Use of Computers in the Classroom written by Samia A. Wahab and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2008-11-11 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a need to understand the factors correlating with teachers' instructional use of computers, because much of the present research focuses on students rather than teachers. This study examines several factors relating to the use of computers in the classroom by teachers. The factors examined include teacher attitudes, emotions, beliefs, and outside influences. This was done by a review of the present literature, administering two surveys, and analyzing the survey data. Questionnaires were distributed to faculty at five randomly selected high schools in a Midwest city participating in the study. Data from the survey was then examined to determine which factors correlate with teacher computer use in the classroom. The results of this study will help improve understanding of teachers' instructional computer use.

Book excerpt: This study examined elementary teachers' perceptions of the impact of one-to-one computing on K-5 elementary teaching and learning. More specifically, the study sought teachers' perceptions on how one-to-one computing impacted professional development, planning and delivery of classroom instruction and student learning. Data were collected from 32 K-5 elementary teacher participants across two public school districts in Western and South Central Pennsylvania. This multi-site qualitative study incorporated the use of an electronic survey, three open-ended responses, and one-to-one interviews to obtain data. The findings of this study indicated that respondents believed that professional development must be provided and ongoing to effectively implement one-to-one computing. Findings also showed that one-to-one computing impacted planning and delivery of instruction by making it easier to differentiate instruction for each student through individualizing curriculum to fit student needs and by increasing student engagement. Finally, results of the study showed that teachers believed that one-to-one computing increased student achievement.

Download or read book Teachers Perceptions of Computer Use in Education in the TRNC Schools written by Fatos Silman and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this study is to examine the perceptions of the classroom teachers on the computer use in the TRNC schools. A questionnaire was applied to 84 classroom teachers in 5 schools in Nicosia, the capital city of the TRNC. The answers to the first part of the questionnaire with five subsections were analysed. Descriptive statistics were used for the analysis. The findings showed that teachers in the TRNC highly believed in the benefits of computers in education. They agreed with the ideas that computers increased student motivation and improved students' skills and knowledge. Teachers were quite positive about computer-aided education and its application. Teachers also believed in the benefits of computers in increasing the learning levels of students. The ideas that teachers disagreed were that computers harmed learning when used in lessons and computers were very complicated to use. (Contains 5 tables.).

Book Teacher Use of Computers and the Internet in Public Schools Stats in Brief Ed442463 U S Department of Education

Download or read book Teacher Use of Computers and the Internet in Public Schools Stats in Brief Ed442463 U S Department of Education written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To address the need to understand the extent and types of teacher use of computers and the Internet, as well as teachers' perceptions of their own preparedness to use these tools in their classes, a National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) survey was commissioned. The survey found that 99% of full-time regular public school teachers reported they had access to computers or the Internet somewhere in their schools. This Stats in Brief focuses on those teachers. Thirty-nine percent indicated that they used computers or the Internet "a lot" to create instructional materials, and 34% reported using computers "a lot" for administrative record keeping. Less than 10% reported using computers or the Internet to access model lesson plans or to access research and best practices. Newer teachers were more likely to use computers or the Internet. Teachers' use of computers or the Internet at school varied for some types of uses by school poverty level. Sixty-six percent reported using computers or the Internet for instruction during class time. Forty-one percent reported assigning students work that involved computer applications such as word processing or spreadsheets to a moderate or large extent; 31% reported assigning practice drills, and 30% reported assigning research using the Internet to a moderate or large extent. Elementary school teachers were more likely than secondary school teachers to assign students practice drills using computers and to have their students use computers or the Internet to solve problems; however, secondary school teachers were more likely to assign research using the Internet. Teachers in the lowest poverty schools were more likely to report assigning student work involving computers to a moderate or large extent than teachers in the highest poverty schools. Teachers with professional development in the use of computers and the Internet over the last three years were more likely to assign students various types of computer- and Internet-based work. Twenty-three percent reported feeling well-prepared to use computers or the Internet in the classroom, and an additional 10% reported feeling very well prepared. Teachers with fewer years of experience and those with more hours of professional development felt better prepared to use computers and the Internet for classroom instruction. (AEF).

Book Exploring Teachers Perceptions and Lived Experiences in the One to One Laptop Computer Environment

Download or read book Exploring Teachers Perceptions and Lived Experiences in the One to One Laptop Computer Environment written by Steve M. Dissinger and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2017, more than 50% of teachers across the United States reported having a one-to-one, student-to-device ratio in their classrooms. This increase was more than 10 percentage points higher than in 2016. While research shows positive benefits to schools that have implemented one-to-one laptop computer initiatives, we lack a clear understanding of the influence a one-to-one laptop computer environment has on pedagogy. This phenomenological research study explored teachers' perceptions and lived experiences with integrating one-to-one laptop computer technology into middle school pedagogy and lessons to understand the influence on pedagogy and learning in a middle school classroom. This study explored the lived experiences and perceptions of 16 middle school teachers representing one middle school in southeastern Chester County, Pennsylvania to understand their teaching perceptions in a one-to-one laptop computer environment. Data were gathered through a series of in-depth, semi-structured interviews, including individual interviews, focus group interviews, and observations during the interviews. Data were analyzed for emergent themes and trends. The study's results indicated increased flexibility for students and teachers and enhanced communication with families as perceived benefits of the one-to-one laptop computer program. Adequate training and professional development programs offered at flexible times for teachers and a reliable infrastructure were significant to the development of teachers' sense of efficacy in the one-to-one laptop computer environment. Additionally, the significance of the transition from elementary school to middle school, further complicated by the addition of one-to-one devices and a learning management system for incoming sixth graders, presents substantial implications for adequate training for students, especially new students, and incoming sixth-grade students. Challenges related primarily to students being distracted by social media, online chats, and websites unrelated to lesson goals and objectives and the disruptions to instruction caused when students arrive to class with un-charged or inoperable devices. The complexities of the learning management system and inconsistent use of the learning management system by teachers were also perceived as challenges in the one-to-one laptop computer environment. Significant recommendations from the study include implementing an in-school charging system for students, developing an age-appropriate digital citizenship course implemented in each grade level; adding a robust technology component to the sixth-grade transition program; and providing ongoing professional development for teachers specific to the learning management system and other best practice, inspired uses of technology in teaching and learning.
